So /vr/ Do you ever think this game will get a remake? How could a game as addictive as this..never even get a sequel...or remake..updated for online play? Does anyone still play Joust? I'd kill for even a single player game with a story campaign mode...
>>
>>4241218
Joust had a sequel, though.
I think Williams Electronics still has the rights, and they merged with some slot machine company, so I'm not holding my breath on an updated Joust any time soon.
>>
>>4241234
lol a slot machine company? wut?
>>
>>4241245
Williams makes slot machines and they merged last year with Scientific Games Corporation, who also make slot machines.
I'm just assuming they still have the rights to Joust and aren't doing anything with it.

Love Joust! Pic related is my high score from a couple weeks back. Like >>4241234 said it did receive a sequel. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet but it looks fantastic.

I was actually pondering a while back how sick a Joust movie would be. Knights riding huge birds in some medieval yet future gladiator setting. Like something out of Heavy Metal. While looking for any back story on the Joust's wiki page it turns out Warner Bros actually bought the rights for a movie a few years back. Interesting. ...
>>
It was a crappier version of Balloon Fight.
>>
The concept is so simple that anybody could make a modern remake without needing the license, just turn the characters into something other than knights riding large birds. It could be about guys that fly using balloons maybe.
>>
>>4241218
Had a sequel and many remakes. What part of the 3rd word do you live in where this isn't common knowledge and summer is just starting?

The rights to all the old Williams/Bally/Midway video games (not pinball machines) belong to WB now. They released Midway Arcade Origins on 360 and PS3 a few years ago.

Joust is a big part of that shitty Ready Player One book/movie thing. The movie's supposed to be a big deal for WB and from the looks of the trailer, Joust still plays a big part in it.

>>4241870
The NES port of Joust was actually Satoru Iwata's first coding project at Nintendo, as part of a failed deal with Atari. The deal fell through so the port was shelved for a few years. Iwata went on to program Balloon Fight not too long after that. Not surprising they're so similar.

It was a couple weeks back so I honestly can't remember what wave. The previous high score was in the 5k range so I crushed that. Is it a good score? Probably not too bad for a novice Ostrich rider if I had to guess :^)

The game actually had a sequel... But kinda sucks when the screen is portrait. They do have many ports, some are part of an arcade compilation...
>>
>>4244991
the sequel is weird as hell and not as fun. It's cool that the stages change every level, but the gameplay doesn't feel as tight, I also remember there being music which wasn't great and weird voice effects

Joust 2 is really fun, and I think the narrow screen is the one thing that ruins it. The pegasus was cool, too.

Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Midway Collection 2 (Playstation) has a version of Joust 2 that plays in landscape. It might not change anyone's mind about Joust 2, but it's worth trying if you thought the screen was too narrow in the arcade version.
>>
>>4245210
what's wrong with it being in portrait mode? does it make gameplay worse or do you just not like black borders? I have a small crt I can flip so this isn't really an issue for me. A lot of classic arcade games ran in vertical mode
>>
>>4245228
There's a lot of fast sideways movement, and it helps to have more horizontal space.
>>
>>4241218
I sure hope so. It's my favorite game. I actually have a Joust and Joust 2 arcade cabinet.

I'd like to get a Joust pinball, but it's ungodly expensive for one in decent condition. I actually played one in the wild in the early 90s. Damn interesting pinball game. 2 player, kind of a cocktail setup. Part of the round would drop a center divider and you would try to shoot balls down the other players return. Also had a bonus round, where tons of "eggs" in the form of pinballs dropped.

There was an xbox live remake with upgraded background graphics. There was some isos or whatever xb live files are called floating around somewhere.

I've not seen any indy game that tried to remake or clone the game that turned out right. I've looked at them all, and it's the only one that feels right.

There was a "Joust 3" that someone made as a fan game, pretty fun, but IIRC the stages scrolled vertically and were kind of strange for that reason.

Flappy bird is basically a Joust clone if you think about it.
>>
>>4242089

I've not played my machine for about a year since we moved then. I put a new p1 start leaf switch in about a month ago. William switches are a bitch to find, I had some that someone had put in a frankenstein GI Joe cabinet.

About 3-4 years ago, I think I was up to about 250-300k, but I played about every other day for about 6 months.

There's a video floating around somewhere of the high score on Joust, it gives you lots of good ideas and strategies. It's pretty crazy how strategic a game with only left, right, and flap can be.

I think the key to upping your high score is just practice. Try to learn from your deaths. You'll slowly chip at your high score, raising it by a few thousand. You'll probably then hit a plateau, think you'll never improve, then beat your old high score by 30k or more. It's pretty crazy, but once you get past the plateaus, you'll slowly improve by a bit at a time until the cycle repeats.
>>
>>4241218
The already holds up fine as it is though. A story is the last thing Joust needs.
>>
>>4245168
Ok wow. congrats! I want to try to beat this. theres no way though lol
>>
>>4246380
you can do it!! I was never really good at this game and got the score within a couple of tries. Pay attention to the other birds as much as your own. Treat it as a pvp situation, the ai gets good, fast, aggressive later in the game. Always think about the potential threats around you and position yourself accordingly, and don't be afraid to fly away from enemies because it's very often necessary.

Interesting. That port of Joust was really bad. The sprites were to the wrong scale compared with the playing field and the physics were just wrong. I always preferred Balloon Fight on the NES for that reason.

The best 8-bit ports of Joust were the Atari 7800 and Atari 400/800 (both coded by GCC).

That is incredible. What is the trick for beating a Pterodactyl? I did it once on accident and could never figure out how I did it.
>>
>>4248795
your lance has to be lined up with its mouth

>On wave 8, then every fifth wave, Pterodactyls appear at the beginning. Only one Pterodactyl appears on early waves, but the maximum of three will appear in later Pterodactyl waves. Avoiding the Pterodactyl and jousting the other warriors is difficult, but it's usually unnecessary. The early Pterodactyls can be killed from one of two spots. When the middle ledge is present, stand on it before the Pterodactyls come out. The Pterodactyls will appear on the bottom and fly right up into your lance. On some waves, the warriors will come after you before you can hit the Pterodactyls. It's all right to jump up a little to avoid them. The Pterodactyls go to the same place as long as you're standing on the ledge before they come out.

When the middle ledge is missing, stand on the bottom ledge directly above the hundred-thousands digit in the first player's score. You have about an inch of space in which to kill the Pterodactyls. This time, the Pterodactyls enter from the middle and come down to you. While you're standing there, no Buzzards will enter from the bottom ledge. Any Hunters coming down from the right will buzz right over your head and sink into the lava. Once the Pterodactyls are gone, move back to the center and play the wave normally.

Anons, I bring to you a long defunct video stored in the recesses of my hard drive for around 10 years. The video quality is shit, but that's how it was then.

If you're interested, I'd suggest downloading it before it's gone for good. Really good strategies here. If you're serious about high scores, here's a resource.

Thanks!

I hope someone tops it so I can try for higher. I find that vertical space is the most important thing. Always try to be moving upward. It's a bit hard to explain, but you get a feel for rising just a bit faster than the AI. If you go too fast, they get really random, making it harder to predict their actions.

Be sure to use the ledges to your advantage. Use them to funnel them to their doom.

If you get killed and spawned on the bottom platform, you can just stand there. The enemies will try to kill you and you can flap up quickly. It's not an end all strategy, but it can help if you get into a bad place.

I think wave 3 has super aggressive enemies. They calm down a bit after that wave. I always make it a goal to not die in that wave. I think it's around this time you'll get a free life. I assume it was a trick by the programmers to eat quarters.

It also pays to watch patterns, how the enemies jam up and remain at around the same height, etc.

Sorry for the blog, just excited and trying to get some strategy talk going.
