No, it looks like a natural progression from Sonic 1 (although it's debatable whether it surpassed it or not, I still think Sonic 1 is the best).
Sonic CD also looks like the other 2 Sonic titles.
The one that felt off compared to the others was Sonic 3, Sonic's sprite got completely redesigned, the color palette became somewhat less colorful, in favor of a more realistic approach, it's not as vibrant and colorful as 1, 2 and CD.
Soundtrack-wise, I think it's Sonic 1 and 2 hands down, Masato Nakamura created the Sonic sound. Sonic 3's soundtrack was great, but nothing beats the classics.

For the 8-bit games, Sonic 1 had some pretty wild bonus stages. Too bad the sequels didn't include anything like this.

Level themes like this are what makes Sonic stand out so much.
Without them, it'd just be a lame Mario. These levels definitely adds personality.

I really did enjoy this stage. Not my favorite in the game, but it's probably my second favorite. I really hated THAT bumper section towards the end of Act 2 or that boss. Really hurt the level for me.
