Does anyone else find Tomb Raider on PS1 comfy as fuck? I don't know what it is about those low-resolution rock textures, but I just love it. And this is coming from someone who didn't even grow up with it.

What are the comfiest 5th gen games?

The Spyro trilogy is still really comfy to play.
>>
I'm starting to hate the term "comfy" but I see where you're coming from, unfiltered low-res textures are pretty charming.

they were too nerve-racking for me when I was a kid
the sharks, yetis, demons, mutants, huge enviroments, limited visibility and darkness were nightmare fuel to me
also no sound except some ambient music and the DANGER MUSIC OUT OF NOWHERE!!!
goddamn fuck that DUN NUN NUN string music when enemies appear, or floating islands theme
>>
>>4222268
This, the lack of any kind of ambient music at all really got to me. All you hear is nature and it was off putting
>>
>>4222261
This is why I always prefer Quake 2 without the filter, but it took me some effort to figure out how to run in hardware mode and turn it off.
>>
>>4222242

I still think the original tomb raider is the best, the clunky nature of surviving the enviroment and the traps coupled with the horror of natures beasts, mummys and cryptozoological horrors made it just as much a survival horror as resident evil for me.

They fucked it up as they went on and it became more action in places like venice, area 51 and less tombs more shootan dudes and big tittays, sure the mechanics were much improved but everything else suffered.

Tomb raider 1 was something special, a product of its time.
>>
>>4222789
I try to turn off texture filtering in whichever modern game or emulator that offers it. Playing n64 games with pixellated psx-like textures makes them look surprisingly more appealing.
>>
>>4222242
>>4222809

My favorite part of the original Tomb Raider was the feeling of complete isolation that no other games have really been able to replicate since then. Every new game has NPCs and dialogue options and a headset with a support team talking to you throughout the level, but in TR you could pretty much go through these long puzzle or exploration sections and not see a single person for hours.

TR2 was a fun game, but they overcompensated for the easiness of TR1's combat (99% of TR's combat could be cheesed by jumping on top of a block and firing your pistols at whatever animal is nearby while it runs around unable to get to you) by throwing in a shit ton of bulletsponge enemies with hitscan weapons, but I still liked it.
>>
>>4222789
unreal (and Q2 ?) have an additional procedural detail texturing when in software mode when upclose. I couldn't understand why I liked the software look much more, until someone here explained me what's going on. Bilinear was so bland in comparison.

The spyro trilogy is the highest level of comfort for me. When I'm sick and in bed I just want an easy and comfy game to play, the spyro trilogy are my sick day games of choice. They're really relaxing.

I used to get spooked by the butler following you around in the mansion when I was a kid.

And then he'd clip halfway through the door in a feeble attempt to escape, ironically (but nonetheless fittingly) resembling Han Solo frozen in Carbonite from Episode 5.
>>
I find it particularly pleasant, but the controls and camera angles at some points really weren't.
>>
>>4223083
The question is: Why wasn't it some sort of objective? These people knew what everyone was going to do. Put the fucker in.
>>
>>4222242
I'm playing these old TR games after anniversary and have mixed feelings about them.
>>
>>4223060
>Every new game has NPCs and dialogue options and a headset with a support team talking to you throughout the level
yep, this is why I dropped the series

Too bad they tried to stick gun fights in the second one. Engine was fucking horrible for it so you had to do summersault between gun shots just to survive.

Only if you were shit.
Lara easily out-manoeuvrers the gun-toting enemies and has wider range of fire. You're safer getting in close to them and staying on their backs.
>>
>>4223825
Still feel the engine was ill suited for it.

This thread warms my heart. TR1 has always been something special.

The level The Citidel is one of my favorite levels of anything ever.

Also how many times did you play through that tutorial?
>>
>>4223428
I had the gameboy advance version of this.

Gameplay was awful, really just a floaty sidescroller where you throw scooby snacks up cavemen's asses
>>
>>4223068
So that's only in software mode or just when the filters are off? I've always liked crisp unfiltered low res textures like that compared to bilinear, but I like the lighting of hardware mode better.

>>4222812
Yeah, if the N64 didn't have that filter it would have had the better looking graphics of the era, since it lacked the texture stuttering problems of the PSX.
>>
>>4224928
>Yeah, if the N64 didn't have that filter it would have had the better looking graphics of the era,
Developers had the option of turn it off. But they didn't because they weren't nostalgia blinded like you.
>>
>>4222812
>>4224928
You actually can't just say N64 will magically look better if you turn off texture filtering because N64 was made with texture filtering in mind. It can render large ass distances so they stretch textures across huge planes. Guess what happens if you have fucking huge texture scales and turn off texture filtering?

>>4224928
It was entirely possible to disable the N64's texture filtering on surfaces, like in this part of Paper Mario. But most devs didn't because the blurry look was considered more advanced at the time.

Honestly, I think it's still pretty playable nowadays. It offers a nice challenge.

TRII on the other hand....I don't think I will be playing that for a third time after going through these two back-to-back awhile back.

Shouldn't that read 'half a millennia ago'? Unless Columbus was still exploring the Americas in the 1950s.

You're right. That comics wasn't about time traveling Lara, it's an erratum.

I remember they had that April Fool's joke that, in the training mission, if you jump off the object that is between the two pillars into the pool at the right angle, Lara's clothes come off.
