Grew up an only child and most of my friends were into Fighting and Sports games growing up (which I never cared for), so I never really got to co-op retro games much.
What are the absolute best retro co-op experiences? And I mean the games best specifically for co-op (so single player doesn't mean a thing here.)
Not a fan of most beat em ups, but I do like the TMNT ones and Golden Axe so no need to recommend those.

Goof Troop
Contra series
Gunstar Heroes
Metal Slug series
Gauntlet Legends
Joe and Mac
Turtles in Time
Basically any arcade series.

1. You can't co-op in fighters, at least not most of them.
2. If I don't like fighting games, they're blatantly not the best choice for me personally.

Yeah missed the co-op somehow. Try Twisted Metal 1 and 2 and others if you like those.
Toejam and Earl might appeal
