That looks pretty fun. Might check it out.

Anyway:

Western: Baldur's Gate or Planescape,b ut leaning more to Baldur (like the generic setting more, fuck it)

Jrpg: A lot to choose from. I'm leaning towards Suikoden, but Wild Arms and some FF's are also pretty good

Meme answer: Xenogears is my pic for both best rpg and worst rpg at the same time

Actual answer: If I think about what an RPG is and does, then the answer is Earthbound.

If I think about arcane interactions of numbers and watching them go up and down in fascinating quantities, then my answer is by default "whatever the newest SaGa game is" at any given point in time.

While not absolutely retro it fits as its a remake of a retro game. It has layers of depth, freedom of choice, replayability up the ass, a unique artstyle that is new but also based on historic gaming style, tons of characters to recruit, many with their own stories and reasons for traveling the world. The ability to literally fuck yourself into a dead end is to me a good thing, it rewards you for not just playing the game, but by taking everything about it apart down to its core.

Easily my favorite rpg. but that doesn't make it the greatest. The fact that you can play it for hundreds of hours and still find quests for the first time or find a new tactical use of something that many hours in is a sign of it being crafted with love from the ground up.

It's a corridor simulator with pervasive load times. Every section of every map is broken up into tiny chunks, with load times between each chunk. Merely traveling from point A to point B takes an average of 40 minutes longer than it did in the original SFC game. God help you if you run into a dead-end and need to backtrack.

I'm sorry, but despite the game's merits, the map system makes it borderline unplayable.

Depends on what you think makes a good RPG. A world you can spend forever exploring? The Elder Scrolls series works well for that. Music and atmosphere? Final Fantasy series usually does well. Character building? FF5, DQ3, Might and Magic games do well for that. Epic adventures? Ultima series does that well. Dungeon Crawling? Eye of the Beholder and Wizardry series are pretty good.

You need to be more specific OP.

Falling Stars. It's a scenario made in Jeff Vogel's Blades of Exile campaign builder. Unfortunately, it needs quite a bit of lead up from the other games by the same guy to really get, but with one or two exceptions (I'm looking at you, Staff of Kayolith), they're well worth playing in their own right.

The reason I'm putting it #1 is more so than any other game I've ever played, this one really got me to care about the world and what happens, and while I don't want to give away spoilers on the off chance that someone will actually want to play it, when something went disastrously wrong, it upset me to to the point that I stood up and screamed at the computer until my voice went hoarse, and a gut punch like that I have never felt before or since, whether in CRPG or a tabletop.

>>4221603
I can't speak for anyone else, but I thought Chrono Trigger was in that "enjoyable but not great" category. I don't hugely like JRPGS in general though, and I found the plot rather obvious and uninspiring, and the characters mostly likeable, but not so much so that it was enough to carry the game to all time greatness.

Even compared to other games that were around by the mid 90s, I think there are half a dozen easily better options, and more that have since been made. I don't entirely understand why it has such a devoted fanbase.

In purely technical terms, those games are first-person, real-time, open world and 3d. Those are all inherently more immersive than other perspectives and therefore de facto superior.

In mechanical terms, the only relevant criteria for judgment of a roleplaying game is, most importantly, meaningful plot-line flexibility, and story quality.

Going by my specifications, which are probably better than anyone else's in this thread, these are the clear contenders for best RPG.
>>
>>4216391
set in 15th centruy Germany, and takes heavy influence from German mythology so besides humans you'll be fighting all kinds of mythological creatures. You get

basic weapon skills (sword, axe, polearms, bow, thorwing, blunt, etc.)
religious training / virtue (allows you to pray to certain Saints, which you have to go to the church and pray and donate to as well as do good deeds in order to ask for favor: success in combat, healing, etc.)
alchemy (there is no magic, so think of this as magic. you get the ingredients and make points that add all kinds of buffs to characters, act as poisions and deal different types of damage. plus this is a great way to make money early in the game)
read and writing and literacy in Common and Latin (you need at least one character that is literate, because there have been times where my literate character died and because i cant read i had to ask townsfolk to read job postings for me; latin is used for religious texts)
artifice (basically weapons making and lock picking as well as any kind of craft relating to items)
theif skills such as stealth, streetwise (how many times the latter got me out of not getting killed in a rough part of town)
ranger skills like ride and woodwise (knowledge of nature, can help you find shelter, hide from bandits and monsters, etc.)

character generation goes by age, so each decade that you character lives you get a new job which give you points to add to your skills based on what job (and only certain jobs can be picked after already learning the basic class, so if you want to be a strong fight you would pick solider, veteran, mercenary etc. same goes for an alchemist or priest). the downside is that the older you get the lower your stats get after 30 years of age. so you can have a 60 year old character with awesome skills but shit stats which doesn't help much. 1/??
>>
>>4221884
2/3 you upgrade abilites by either using them many many times or you can pay to be trained by different masters or guilds depending on what you want to learn - but be warned that if you are too low/high or just not a likealbe person, a lot of people won't train you.

the gameplay, you have different town and cities through germany and you can do the basic things in town: buy items, look for jobs, study a trade, work, go to church and even go to prison. when you leave the town that is when the real fun starts, you are constantly beset by bandits, robber barrons, wolves, werewolves, forest monsters and all other kinds of enemies. you can fight giant snakes, dragons, gnolls and other mythological types as well. the combat controls take a long time to learn but once you get used to them and past the graphics (i played this when it came out have been playing it over for 20 years) it's an amazingly engrossing game and really addicting because of the sheer freedom that you have
>>
>>4221915
one play through I recently had was I started off with a mixed part, a fighter, a nun, an alchemist and a ranger. after making some potions and selling them to equip my party members i set out into the wilderness to adventure. walking along the path we were attack by bandits, and my alchemist was killed. well i can always get a new guy so i kept going. while camping to restore my health a forest spirit came out of the woods and demanded that i give him my only female character or he would kill my whole party. so i gave her away since i was pretty weak and would probably die right away. finally we are off to the next town with 2 down. along the way we are stopped by a traveling clergyman and extorted to pay tribute (gold) to him or he and his 10 men would attack me. well there goes all my money. i finally get to the next town and because i dont have any money i cant enter the town. so i scale the wall and get in but get caught and go to prison. my fighter dies in prison and my ranger manages to almost dig his way out but is caught and punished. he finally digs his way out the second time and escapes the city, with nothing at all, no items. i traveled for 2 months naked through the wilderness, and finally came to a town where someone would join my party, i sold his high level equipment to get some money and built up a new party. after adventuring with that party for about 6 months game time, we defeated a dragon, stop a satanic cult from their sacrifice and defeated a robber baron.

>>4225523
I never got through the second one. Partly for superficial reasons. The first one is still to this day one of the best looking games ever made IMO, and NWN2 is one of the ugliest games I have ever played.
The second game just felt very sluggish and strange to me. I've heard people say the story is better and whatnot, but I don't remember anything from the second and remember everything quite vividly from the first. I don't know how many times I've seen a review or an essay describing some narrative or mechanical flaw in a given game and thought to myself "NWN did it right"

>>4225531
Which one do you mean?
I think the first one is a masterpiece, but the learning curve is very slow. Probably the only 'complaint' I have with the game, though I like a slow learning curve. Play the first one as a wizard and try to really obsessively consider your every choice of spell and feats. Is dope.
>>
>>4225523
Oh, and the first had an amazing and unique multiplayer that has never since been replicated. You were basically given the devs toolkit and could do whatever the hell you wanted with it. People made some absolutely amazing servers complete with their own real time coordinated little adventures and handmade environments.
God, I miss that shit.
