Dragon Quest/Warrior thread

What game are you playing? Are you enjoying it?

As for me I've been playing through the whole series again in anticipation for 11 to come out next year In the states. About halfway through DQ5 and loving it as usual. Though this time I've decided to spice up my playthrough a little bit by abusing the casino and getting the Gringham whip and Two metal king swords for my hero and slime knight. Suffice it to say I've pretty much broke the game and all encounters end swiftly and safety. Normally I try not to cheat or abuse the Casino in DQ games because I think it makes the game boring but I decided to try it at least once. Luckily I've already played through 5 multiple times so it's not like the experience was ruined or anything.

Looking forward to starting up 6 soon. I've only played through it once and while I enjoyed it, the game didn't capture me in the same way 4&5 did. I was expecting something more story driven but it's clear 6 is far more focused on gameplay, however this time I plan to play the game with a completely open mind and enjoy it for what it has to offer, I do remember the vocation system being a lot of fun to use.
>>
what's the best version of 4 to play for someone who likes both older and modern styled jrpgs?
>>
I started with the SNES remake of 1 and jumped straight to 3, I just got the ship from Portoga and went exploring the south islands, there is a shrine with an egg that does nothing (for now) and a town in another island with a desert cave I cant access (for now)

when Im done Im planning on starting IV on DS, apparently the phone version is pretty lacking despite having party chat and the NES version might be a tad too oldschool for me, I dunno, might reconsider it if battles go faster than in the DS version
>>

Assuming you can't read Japanese then this is a tricky and ultimately personal decision.

IV has three English releases, they are the nes, ds, and ios release.

The nes version is obviously the most old fashioned. This version is is like the other nes dragon quest games if you played it. The battle system is a bit weird in this particular version though. In the final chapter of the game where you get your whole party you will only be allowed to control you hero, everyone else is controlled by AI. The AI is actually mostly reliable and can be pretty smart, just remember "mostly". Also this version doesn't have the postgame of the later versions. Although it is the oldest and has a bit of censorship this is genuinely the most accurate English script of the game that exists.

IV was later remade for the playstation in the same engine as DQVII that was never released outside Japan. However, this remake was later ported to the ds. This version naturally features more modern and better looking art, sound, and mechanics. Also in version the game now allows you to have complete control of your party at all times, even in chapter 5. This version also added postgame content that continues the story of the game. Unfortunately the English translation for this version is quite poor, or more rather weird. The game has multiple characters that come from different parts of the world and to try to show how different all these continents in the game were each one was given accents. These accents are taken to extreme measures though and make the text not only sound more goofy but more difficult to read.

The ios version is the same as the ds version with a minor difference. In the original English ds release the party chat, a option to converse with your party members on the overworld, was removed despite being fully translated. In this version the party chat is restored though. Apart from that though this really is the same as the ds version.

Continued...
>>

Ultimately it will come down to what you value more.

The nes version ultimately has the more tolerable script but the lack of modern refinements and the fact that you can't control your party members in chapter 5 (technically this is possible through cheating but the game is not balanced around this).

The ds and ios version has more modern conveniences as well as the bonus chapter however the translation has come off as annoying and intolerable to many.

Hopefully this post can be used for the entire thread on the consistent question of "What version of IV should I play?". I hope this helps anyone interested in DQIV.

I'm currently replaying VIII because I never did the post game stuff. Granted with the semester starting tomorrow it may be a while before I actually finish the post game lol.

That' being said I've played and beaten I through VIII, I own IX but I've never played it.

I don't think I played the original for any of them. For I - III I played the gameboy/GBC remakes ( how I discovered the DQ series when I was 12 ). 4 through 6 I played the DS remake. VII and VIII I played the original PS1 and PS2 versions. Did play the VII 3DS remake though and was actually pretty happy with it.

Really hoping XI comes to both the Switch and the US soon.

Thank you, this was very informative. I think I'll go with the NES version after all, though like you mentioned the inability to control your party members by the end game does worry me considering how unforgiving some DQ enemies can be. If they can be conservative with their MP then I don't think it'll be too bad. I'll probably just move on to the DS version after the NES if I end up really liking IV, anyway.

Happy to hear you found it informative.

Having played both versions I would say say your concern about mp won't be a huge problem. I didn't mention it up there but you change your party's behavior. If you want them to only do regular attacks you set them to do that or only do magic attacks for example. While they can do some stupid stuff this isn't a huge deal and overall I never found myself unable to progress due to how stupid the AI would. Probably the worst, and most famous, example of the AI being dumb comes from Kiryl/Cristo. If you bring him to a boss battle he has weird habit of constantly spamming beat/whack on them despite it not being able to ever kill a boss. This quirk has become quite famous even and is often referenced in other DQ games, both in the English and Japanese scripts. Here's a line from DQIX joking about it.

Thanks for the information. Is the party chat feature really worth suffering through touch screen controls and the odd translation? I'm starting my playthrough of DQIV now after beating I-III on SNES. And I got DQIV working on an android emulator but setting up controller for it sucks haha. And I hate touch screen controls.
>>
>>4204374
It's charming but nothing huge, just adds some character to the cast. Maybe on a replay it would be nice. I may be wrong but I think there might have been a patch that restores party chat on the ds version though I'm not sure.
>>
>>4204130
I would also note that with the NES version your party members can and will respond to situations faster than you could.

If a member were knocked out, another member could revive them on his action instead of on the next turn, for example.

Comes in handy when your party has a few healers and you're fighting strong enemies who might gang up on someone and kill them before you can cast some heal spells.

>>4204115
Man, thinking of the DQ4 DS script, I can't imagine how hard it would be for an ESL player to read and comprehend. Native speakers can barely get through it, it seems. As for me, I'm completely earnestly learning Japanese just so I can experience this game properly.
>>
Playing through DQ3 SNES. It's the only mainline DQ that I haven't beat. Ive gotten as far as Alefgard and lost my save in the GBC version. Went with the SNES version this time since I like the graphics and music better. About to get to Romaly. I have Thief, Cleric, and Mage. Gonna change my Thief into a Sage, Cleric into a Fighter, and Mage into a Warrior. Hopefully this will be a good setup. Oh I have a female hero since Sexy is too good of a personality and females get the best armor in the game.

Dragon Quest music is so amazing

DQ1 Unknown world

DQ2 Lonely youth

DQ3 last boss theme

DQ6 town theme

DQ8 battle theme

And the series main theme, just goddamn

Is it just me, or are DQ3 warriors kind of bad? My Warrior was inferior to the fighter in speed, defense and offense. I ended up using him for sage stone duty.

Male or female? I remember readin some article that was saying how male warriors have a significantly inferior stat growth rate then females. This actually true for all classes, females naturally have better stat growth, but difference between the male and female warrior waa much bigger.

Did you get the box set that has 1-6 or did you get them all individually? I have the box set and then 7-10 individually.
>>
>>4204828
All individually why is there a difference?
>>
>>4204830
If I'm correct, the box set is done by the London Philharmonic Orchestra while the individual ones are done by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. I've only heard the London box set for 1-6 so I have no idea if they are that different. Got a link for 1-6? I'll try to find one for the box set. I found it years ago on some forum. I think that's gone by now.

I am playing VII, i beat this game back in 2011 and though it was fun to search for shards and revisiting places to see what became of the old towns the game was tedious as fuck on the grind department, this time i decided to just fast forward every time i grind for money or for classes.
I just save Dharma Temple from the baddies and change the Hero and Gabo into Paladins meanwhile Maribel became a Sage, having a fucking blast.

Why do people always say this? What's so bad about the modern DQ localizations? What do they get wrong?

>>

Apparently this is actually a big part of the Japanese version that gets lost in translation is regional dialects in every area so they're attempting to re-create that same feel from the Japanese.
>>
>>4204872
I see the MC picked the best waifu
>>
>>4205123
People will tell you that the japanese dialects aren't like that. But even in a country like england there are several distinct dialects. Just weebs who'd prefer a literal translation with none of nuances of actual translation.
>>
>>4205456
>People will tell you that the japanese dialects aren't like that.
A big part of it is that marked language in Japanese has its own standardized forms that people are going to be familiar with. It's become part of a shorthand for characterization in written media in ways that there are far fewer analogs for in English. Even as a non-native speaker of Japanese I think that it's far easier to understand, and far more meaningful, than the English translation. The English is just a bunch of empty signifiers.

You can argue whether or not the translation should have attempted to replicate it, but it's hard to argue that it did it anything but awfully. It's funny that you think this has to do with "weebs" or "literal translations" because this is an attempt to follow much too closely to the language of the original. There are no "nuances," just blind attempts to replicate form.
>>
>>4205443
That's why I said it's the best party.
>>
>>4204993
>>4205002
How do people have trouble understanding these. And it's not like they changed the story, who cares if they use accents
>>
>>4204427
>ESL

I'm an ESL and I really had no trouble with it.

>>4204881
Basically, the puns and the accents are nowhere to be found in the original Japanese. They are added by SE (not the English localization teams, the accents are found in every language the games have been translated to). It's a big liberty to take. I personally love them, although I understand their negatives.
>>
>>4204772
Yes, but the swastika was not invented by the Nazis and was around long before they adopted it for their flag.
Asian and Indian countries still use it in it's original form and meaning.

People want the "Toriyama style". How is it going to be a selling point if you don't realize at first glance?
Is just marketing.

So in 3, how does stat distribution differ among the genders?

It doesn't.
The only differences between the genders are the sprites, the additional equipment restrictions after class restrictions, and if playing the SNES or GBC version, the available personalities.
