lets be honest, he did nothing wrong. a bunch of shitty 2d jrpgs wouldnt have sold the saturn outside of japan.
>>
Yeah, man nobody was buying JRPGs in the 90s right?
>>
>>4198795
b-b-but Final Fantasy 7
>>
>>4198858
star ocean, fft, suikoden, azure dreams, etc etc etc
>>
>>4198795
Games would have helped. ANY games, particularly after 1996. Sega skipping holiday season in Burgerland in 1997/1998 was dumb as hell.
>>
maybe not, but all those arcade-perfect ports of games that looked and played like shit on the playstation would have.
>>
>>4198810
>>4198859
only jrpg that was popular outside of japan was FF
>>
FF7 was the game that made the PSX, came out after he left.

Meanwhile I knew lots of sega fans who felt betrayed by the fact that we didn't get stuff like the Lunar remakes, Grandia, Sakura Wars, etc.. Weeb stuff was exploding in popularity at the time and the Saturn had it in droves but practically none of it made it to America.
>>
>>4198867
o rly?
>>
>>4198795
>he did nothing wrong
He pissed off developers & retailers, killed the Saturn & Dreamcast. I'd say he did everything wrong.
>>
Saurn was not that popular in japan desu
>>
>>4198795
>>4198863
Oh, and launching Dreamcast at its intended price of $249 would've put some cash back in Sega's, coffers. His decision to launch at $199 was the final nail in the coffin of Sega's hardware division and was the reason his ass was canned, and rightfully so. What was the point of all that effort to get third parties behind Dreamcast if the company was gonna run out of money anyway?
>>
>>4198872
>killed the Dreamcast
if it wasnt for him the dreamcast wouldnt have the greatest launch of ALL TIME and the online wouldnt have been there or at least as prominent
>>
>>4198867
and parasite eve and legend of dragoon, and digimon world, and chrono cross etc etc
>>
>>4198879
>proceeds to list games that didnt even sell well
k...
>>
>>4198881
all of those games sold at least as well as FFT. At least fact check before you prepare a witty retort.
>>
>>4198883
at least know who you are replying to dumb dumb
>>
>>4198875
The last thing Sega needed to do was raise the price of the system. Isn't that part of what killed the Saturn?
>>
>>4198875
Would anyone have bought it for $249? Not many with the established library of the PS1, that was sold for $149 by 1999, and the N64, which had the most critically acclaimed games, selling for $199. You can argue about new hardware but in the end, the Saturn burned so many consumers worldwide that Sega needed a low entry price to entice people.
Besides, SEGA, like all console makers, made their profits off software, not hardware.
>>
>>4198905
>Besides, SEGA, like all console makers, made their profits off software, not hardware.

Dreamcast sales would've made money if they sold it at $250.
>>
>>4198971
prove it, i need financial data
>>
>>4198905
Maybe you don't remember how fucking mindblowing stuff like SoulCalibur and Sonic Adventure looked back in 1999; people would have paid for it, the PlayStation and N64 simply could not compete in terms of visuals. $249 was still less expensive than the PlayStation or Saturn at launch, and games were still way cheaper than N64 carts. The only thing selling at $199 did was ensure Sega lost money on the hardware rather than turning a profit from day one at a time when the desperately needed to make money.
>>
>>4198978
SA still isn't as good as Crash Bandicoot or Mario 64
SC isn't really that much better than the Tekkens

>>

Just do double confirm you're 100% aware he's talking about visuals right?
>>
>>4198974
Xbox 360 and PS3 were always sold at a loss from day one. Wii was sold at a small profit, which is why when the Wii U failed Nintendo didn't suffer (despite Iwata taking a 50% pay-cut as an apology for the failure; also handhelds.

The 260 and PS3 survived because of their extras (controllers, hard-drives, Wii-knockoffs) which cost so damn much but the general public see a new, shiny toy and want it in droves.

In an era where FFVII made 2d jrpgs a huge hit and easy money, you think that they wouldn't have helped the Saturn...

OK, whatever. While we're both here tough, I got this bridge I'd like to sell you.
>>
>>4198901
Saturn and PlayStation were priced comparably to each other in Japan, and would've been priced comparably to each other in the US had Sega not pulled the dumbass early launch stunt. With Saturn's early launch, Sony (or rather, one American exec who acted without permission) saw an opportunity to cut the Saturn's legs out from under it by launching the PlayStation at $299.
>>
>>4198795
What if he made FF7 exclusive to saturn?
>>
>>4199097
>Square releasing on a Sega system
>Ever
Ha! Ha! Good one, anon!
>>
>>4199102
it was suppose to come out for the saturn as well
>>
>>4199134
Complete bullshit. Square never targeted Sega, even when Saturn was doing unexpectedly well in Japan. If you heard otherwise it's come "my dad who works at Nintendo" grade BS.
>>
>unexpectedly well in Japan
And yet by end of 1995 playstation had already taken the lead in japan
>>
>>4199151
Way to steer the conversation off topic there, Sony fanboy.

Saturn in Japan was a success thanks to Segata Sanshiro. Without him, the Sega Saturn would have faded in obscurity in Japan.
>>
Go back to your play station-Ecks, bernieposter.
>>
>>4199141
When you have more money than God you can just blitzkrieg marketing shouting "look how awesome this shit is" then when people get to the store and find out it's cheap too you don't really need to target anybody.

The days of rival video game consoles were over.
>>
>>4199214
Not quite sure what you're getting at. My point was that Square never developed for nor expressed interest in developing for a Sega system; they were loyal to Nintendo until Nintendo screwed the pooch by sticking with cartridges, then they jumped ship to Sony. The idea of FFVII existing in any form on a Sega system is comical.
>>
>>4199208
Don't you mean ShovelwareStation-Ecks?

Segafags, like all people, needed someone to carry the blame and Bernie Stolar was their man. Nevermind that the Saturn had been dead since 1996, never mind that the PS1 still existed and claimed the crown that gen, never mind the fact that the Saturn's crippling hardware issues were still present (that is, pre-devkit2), it was, and always ALL be because of Stolar.

It's just human nature anon
>>
How would Sega have fared that gen if SoJ hadn't gone full retard and pissed off their USA branch, killing themselves in the process?
>>
>>4198875

>His ass was canned

He was released from his contract early and given a FIVE MILLION DOLLAR severance package in return. Imagine doing insurmountable damage to a brand and getting a truckload of money for it.
>>
>>4199261
Stolar is blamed primarily because he publicly said a lot of really fucking stupid shit, making it essentially impossible to overcome the other problems you mentioned. Yes, all those problems likely would've done in Sega regardless, but Stolar accelerated things.
>>
>>4199261
I don't think people actually believe Sega could have won over Sony without Stolar, but Stolar was an idiot regardless.
>>
>>4199227

>the idea of it existing on a sony system is comical

and Pokemon
Mario RPG
Chrono
Secret of Mana
>>
>>4198875
Is that why they started giving them away with dial up subs?

I had like four at one time.
>>
>>4198795
Mate, when your machine is increasingly known for having no games, there's a point where you just need to release fucking anything.
it's particularly dumb when the same games you held back for release on Saturn ended up with PS1 releases

>>4198872
>He pissed off developers & retailers
he wasn't there for the early launch, and he made an actual effort to make the DC competitive
trashing the shit out of the Saturn and trying to pave the way for the DC was retarded though, that's no way to run things

>>4198873
It sold competently, instead of just being some also-ran machine like it was in the west.
>>
>>4198795
love the jap saturn, always will, the black usa saturn with the clunky controller and the shit games cant even remotely compare, they FUCKED up so badly in the usa, even the americans stayed away from it
>>
>>4200968
Black Saturn looks sexy as hell though.
the original controller is a clusterfuck but that's why model 2 controllers exist.
>>
>>4201390
the bland dust magnet with the over sized controller that gives you finger aids after holding it for 2 miuntes?
>>
>>4201815
