What is your opinion on the list of retro zones they went with for Sonic Mania, /vr/?

I'm interested in if they'll fix Stardust Speedway. The style is neat, but the platforming was a bit weak originally.

Also, here's the complete list of levels returning from the Genesis games:

I would too but it's probably a Sonic Team mandate to 'sell more copies' or something, doesn't seem like something Taxman came up with on his own. Hopefully the (presumably) positive response the original zones get will lead to a second game with nothing recycled.

I'm not too impressed; could've picked better stages like Spring Yard, Casino Night, Wacky Workbench, Ice Cap, or Death Egg. They also didn't pick enough Sonic 3 levels, though granted most are shit like Carnival and Marble Garden.

I'm tired of playing the same zones for the last 20+ years.
I'm not interested in Mania. Yeah, it does look good while modern Sonic is pure shit, some of the level and enemy design is amazing like the battle against Metal Sonic, but it brings nothing new. It's a 20 year old rehash done by developers that can do nothing but rehash an old game.

Even the sprites were drawn over 20 year old ones.

I want a real sequel. Give me better graphics, with animation, at least, on SFIII level (it's also 20 year old game), add something interesting, maybe branching paths leading to different stages in each playthrough, maybe even a new playable character like Amy.

I'm glad it's in, but from what I've seen of the layout, it doesn't look as enjoyable. Less of an even wet/dry mix, takes design cues from fucking Labyrinth for some reason.
also, this stage brings to mind the fact that Mania doesn't have enough water (GHZ2 has water, CPZ has a tiny bit of water, and then there's Hydrocity, and that's it)

see, I've always liked Metallic Madness, and the Mania layout looks great.

dumb shit: I wish all of the returning stages had updates as drastic as the Sonic CD stages. Completely new music, new gimmick in both acts, stage design that feels like it's actually different.
OOZ 1 is really similar as it was in Sonic 2 -- layout has clear changes, but it's still a very similar layout overall. FBZ 1 feels pretty similar. FBZ 2 takes a bunch of Wing Fortress design cues that I'm not sure I'm happy about.
GHZ 1 changes a bit, but half the act is literally taken directly from original GHZ.

Oil Ocean really should have been replaced with Mystic Cave.

The Act 2's are fucking dope though, the same gimmicks could have been done in original stages but it's still pretty neat. Looking at the very positive response to the game I actually think including the old zones was a marketing tactic that's paid off big time. Gives lapsed fans of the 90s a valid reason to check it out AND invests them in an all-original sequel, if they choose to go that route.

Standalone, it's the best Sonic game. But it feels lazy compared to the older games. Even Call of Duty isn't rehashed this bad

My gut reaction is to ask for Ice Cap zone, but it probably isn't the best level basis when you put aside the baller music. Angel Island would also be redundant; it's my favorite classic intro level by far but I'm a 3&Kfag and Green Hill zone is kinda mandatory anyway.

I dumbed and forgot that Sonic 1 only has 1 zone here while 3&K has 3 so it's not an even split, but if you're trying to be evenish my point still stands.

I also want to add that they easily picked the 3 best 3&K zones, I'd also include Angel Island (as I said earlier), Sky Sanctuary, and Mushroom Hill but then I'd be destroying any pretense of even representation.
