What platform are you using?
If you're on linux and got it off main repos, a lot of major distros don't give a fuck about retro gaming and put manpower into shit like steam first.
One thing that'd be easy to try is using a different emu like nestopia or higan.
Some emus even need the actual game genie rom for gg codes and so on.

Thanks for the help you guys, but I am just retarded after all. I somehow forgot I changed the input from the arrow keys to WASD (even though I was just playing the game with that setup). Sorry.
