Ys thread!
What is your favorite Ys game?
What's is your favorite (or least hated) retro version of Ys 3?
How do you pronounce Ys?
>>
It's pronounced "ys" like the "eace" in "peace" I guess.
>>
So stupid. I had the SNES one (Wanderer's From Y's, I think?) when I was 13. Damn fool. I SOLD it, along with my Supes.
Little bastard. I didn't know what I had. Was just a hardass action rpg that I sucked at.
>>
Memories of Celceta port when?
>>4180857
No biggie really. It isn't a very expensive game if you ever wanted to pick up a physical copy.
>>
I wish Falcom stopped remaking and made some better sequels. Like a better Legend of Heroes game (not the Trails kind)
>>
>>4180893
>I wish Falcom stopped remaking
Ys 8 just recently came out and it's gotten a lot of praise.
>>
I've really only played 3, and Oath In Felghana. I didn't play the other games enough to really get a feel for them. Only played the first and second games up to the first dungeon or so, and although I did play YS V about halfway through, it was forever ago and I don't really remember much of it.

Of the original versions of YS 3, it's a bit of a tough choice between the Genesis version and the TCD version. Grew up with the SNES version, but it has the worst music, worst graphics, and horribly inaccurate hit detection. It does have those really sweet anime-like cutscenes, though.

Genesis version has the best graphics, nice hit detection, great music, but for some reason they vastly increased the exp requirement for leveling.

TCD version obviously has the best music with the CD audio, and overall it was much easier, with lower exp requirements, lower enemy health/damage, etc....but for some reason the final boss is fucking ridiculously hard, way harder than either the Gen or SNES versions.

They all have their pluses and minuses; it's hard to really single one out as the "best" version. It's a close tie between Gen and TCD.
>>
>>4180846
it's pronounced how it's spelled.
say "yes" without the "e".
>>
>>4180846
it's no wonder this series isn't big in the west. no one can even pronounce it. they should rename it something like "Adol's Amazing Adventures"
>>
>>4180936
So it's pronounced "yiss" ?

The first place I remember hearing it was an old Extended Play / XPlay review, and they said that it was pronounced "yeeze" like "cheese".

Does Ys Eternal count as retro? (1998)
If not then Dawn of Ys.

Wanderers on Genesis was the only version I could tolerate for more than 20 minutes even if I did finish all of them.

It was an alternate perfect looping soundtrack they made as a bonus to the fan translation of Ys I & II complete. Apparently it was made from PCE-CD tracks and Perfect Collection tracks.

>What is your favorite Ys game?
Oath in Felghana, tied with Ys Eternal. Something about the graphics set and music of Eternal is nicer to me than Chronicles and Complete, and plus the extras it comes with in the box, like crap tons of sheet music on a CD for Ys 1, 2, and 3, is awesome.
>What's is your favorite (or least hated) retro version of Ys 3?
PC-88. I love the music in it, and the gameplay isn't too shabby either.
>How do you pronounce Ys?
Ease.
>>
>>4180846
Dawn of Ys is my favorite. One of the best 16-bit games

Ys III isn't great but it comes 2nd just because it has so many versions with identical gameplay but different look and sound

Turbo CD>X68000>Genesis>SNES
>>
>>4180930
>but for some reason the final boss is fucking ridiculously hard, way harder than either the Gen or SNES versions.

I haven't played the SNES version, but the final boss is way fucking harder in the Genesis version imo. he's more aggressive and has different patterns

If you like the Genesis port try the X68000 port. it's basically the same but it has better colors and slightly improved sound
>>
i'll never get why falcom didn't just go with dawn of ys as canon and remade that instead

it's awesome
>>
>>4182318
Hudson deviated too much from Falcom's script. That's the main reason

In Mask of the Sun the angel guy is the main villain, but in Dawn of Ys <spoiler>he is betrayed and killed by the blue haired guy, and then some dude in green armor is the final boss</spoiler>
>>
How's the DS remake of 1 and 2, any good?
>>
Friggin love this series. Ys 2 is my favorite. Just pure ARPG fantasy goodness with an amazing soundtrack. That Yuzo Koshiro and Mieko Ishikawa. I still haven't played 7 or Celceta yet. I don't want to buy a system for one or two games. Would love a steam port but I doubt it happen so I'll just have to wait til I can emulate the systems.
>>
>>4181887
If you're still interested I managed to find them here.
http://lensterknight.superbusnet.com/other/
Holy shit Complete sounds so much better with the PCE-CD music.
>>
>>4182323
And yet with Celceta they went with Gruda being the main bad guy yet again.
>>
>>4182318
Some people hate that the PCE Ys 4 woke Fina and Lair back up, weakening the farewell at the end of Ys 2
Also Sara is murdered in every other version of Ys; only Hudson's PCE Ys 1&2 has her still alive, which allowed her to show up in their version of 4
>>
>>4182773
Seven is coming to PC via steam and GOG later this month actually. The steam page is already up. In due time it's very likely that they'll port Celceta as well. You can already play Celceta's Chinese PC port with an English patch, it works decent enough but isn't optimal.

I hope Lacrimosa of Dana makes it to GOG somehow, I wanna play it but Steam sucks for me.

>>4182785
I was very disappointed by this, Mask of the Sun had a better build up to the final boss. I hated how Eldeel suddenly had schizophrenia and all that stuff, it was too forced and stupid.
>>
>How do you pronounce Ys?
Why does this question come up? There are plenty of voiced games plus the anime that should answer that once and for all.
>>
>>4182929
I hate how Celceta removed so many interesting plot points in general. I was for more interested in the idea of not all Eldeen being a bunch of goody two-shoes.

Ys I and II for PC engine is still my favorite, I know the steam version is probably technically better and that most people hate the bump combat, what with their oath in felghanas and whatnot...don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but I feel like people never go and play the older ones because they don't play exactly the same. For me though Ys I and II was my first game I played in the series and I still love it.

I also like the PC Engine version of ys 3 the most...the music in the SNES version is really not great IMO but the other versions are generally ok.

and it's pronounced "eese" like in "geese"
>>
>>4183385
I think bump is pretty fun. I wish there was another variant of Wanderers that used the classic forumla instead of the sidescrolling or the post-VI system used in the remake.

Ys I & II Eternal is definitely my favorite. I didn't like the later remakes as much. In a lot of way Ys VI and Ys I & II Eternal are probably the most important Ys games out there, since they revived the series from extinction.

At first I thought the change for it being a belt scroller would be dumb but I loved how different the game was gameplay wise and the soundtrack was superb too.

I can't just choose one. I like them all for different reasons. The Ys series is just fun to me. I am very hyped to get the Steam release of 7 and 8.

I also remember paying $2 to get Ys on my old Motorola Razr flip phone, is there a way to extract that from the phone and an emulator on my computer to play it?

oh, but it's missing loop tags, which means that they won't properly loop in-game

adding those is a pain in the ass since you have to use audacity to get the sample position
>>

>but super grindy
This is a case of git gud
you shouldn't need to grind 95% of the time
>>
>>4185851
They loop properly. Make sure to unpack the oggs as he states in the readme.
>>
>>4185948
You're right, you don't have to grind in the proper sense of the word but there is a lot of compulsory backtracking and huuuuge mobs of low level repetitive unchallenging mooks. The only time the game gets challenging is during boss fights, the rest is "grindy" filler.
>>
>>4180846
I'm playing Origin now. Seems pretty cool, but is it worth going through it a second and third time with the other characters? It's just the same maps and bosses right?

Anyway I never liked Ys 1 or 2. I played the PSP versions not the Famicom or TG-16 ones but there just wasn't much content in those. Didn't care for the rest of them either but I will says Ys 5 was great. It's my favorite /vr/ one and I'm glad it finally got translated.

Nice post, but wrong.
>>
>>4186196
>It's just the same maps and bosses right?

Plot and some of the bosses change, character's play-style are all pretty different from each other. Maps don't change, but some characters might have to backtrack to get past a floor, while others might circumvent a locked door altogether, etc....
>>
>>4186140
That's the big problem with Ys, fighting non-boss enemies is very dull, but mandatory. They are nothing but XP piñatas, even in Oath.

>>4186140
>>4186309
Makes me wonder, are there any top-down ARPGS that focus on having a challenge, or at least semi-challenge, at all times? Where enemies are meant to be more threatening on an individual level, or placed more intelligently rather than just randomly scattered about?

My point isn't very clear so what I mean is more of a Souls-esque approach to enemy design. Or for a more /vr/ appropriate example, King's Field/Shadow Tower. It feels more like an enemy design idea that exists more in 3D than 2D.
>>
>>4186309
Basically, every fight should make you nervous about survival. Maybe not every fight should be boss fight-tier difficulty where you usually have to try multiple times, but something where you actually have to take some effort to get through the battle. Make enemies block and dodge moves, leave only small windows for attack so blind button mashing won't work.
Often only stronger ordinary enemies do this, like knights in some Ys games, and even then they're pretty easy to beat once you get the hang of it.
>>
>>4186994
Xanadu. You can't grind or heal indefinitely so you have to consider carefully how you approach fights.
>>
>>4183385
I dropped the Steam versions of Ys I&II about 5 minutes after starting them because of the bump combat and just started Oath in Felghana.

Then I decided to try them again, fell in love with them in a huge way and am now sad that none of the other games have bump combat. It was incredibly satisfying in a way that the button mashing of the newer games isn't.

Plus, nothing beats being able to play an RPG with one hand on your balls.

That was the first entry I played. It wasn't bad, but it was honestly kind of bland in terms of art and sound design. I played through the TCD version a few years later, found it more enjoyable.

I think I just prefer the artistic integrity and genuine character of the original to the somewhat unpolished, low-res polygonal remake.

I don't really get the intense love people have for this series. Each game is fun for like the 5-7 hours it takes to beat it but after that there's not much going for it. The stories are weak and Adol has like zero personality other than being the generic hero. I'm not saying it's bad, just bland. But people seem really obsessed over it.
>>
>>4192017
Okay.
>>
>>4192017
I think there's a feel-good nature about the series. The story is a step above, say, the original Zelda, but not by much. The characters have just enough personality to be endearing at best and forgettable at worst. Adol, having no characteristics but wanderlust, is the perfect blank slate for players to project themselves into the story.

In short:

Be aleart, stand firm to be yourself.
Courage is not a blind impulse.
It almost approaches the intimation of immortality.

Huh. Somebody got it right for a change. Good man. Too many 'ease' saying deaf suckers in the world.
>>
>>4193626
It is "ease" tho
>>
Felghana remake sucks, I have no idea why people suck its dick 24/7. Origin is the best of the modern Ys, but the best of all will always be the classics where you just slam face first into everything.

They are practically the same game.

Still trying to get than fan translation of Dawn of Ys.
>>
I'm playing YS 1 and the bosses are bullshit.
Does anyone else play with an arcade stick?
>>
>>4195381
The mechanics in the Felhgana remake are essentially the same as that of Origin. The story is the only real difference, so is it that you don't like Felghana's story?

It's hard due to devs fucking up hitboxes and whatnot when porting the game to SNES. Hell, i'm tempted to say the game is actually easy as shit if you're playing the right version. Just give Ys 3 on Genesis or PCE a quick try and you'll be able to tell something is awfully wrong with the SNES port.

Have you heard more than 2 or 3 songs in your life

Yes, anon, there are a lot of bad guitarists out in the world. One of them played on this track >>4185453

Make sure you're using 8 directioal movement instead of 360 degrees, if you're playing a newer version. Otherwise you simply need to stop being a jobber or trying leveling up once.
>>
>>4196172
They run on the same engine but are nothing alike.

Origin has
>better characters
>better story
>even HAS a story
>let alone 3 stories
>better graphics and bosses
>smoother gameplay
>three gameplay styles

Would also mention better graphics but that's a given since it came out later. Basically whatever Oath does Origin does better.

>better graphics and bosses

Meant better magic spells but whatever, was already thinking about my graphics comment in my head. I'll just say it has better both.
>>
>>4196174
It's already there

Don't pay him any attention, for years now there's this anon that shows up in Ys threads to talk shit about Felghana because it "ruined the original game" and "ruined Chester's character". It's nonsense.
>>
>>4196689
Not him but, Felghana does have worse music, character design and while a lot people hate it side scrolling was better.
>>
It's funny, because before Ys went to Steam babbies, Origin was undoubtedly considered weaker than Felghana by Ys fans. It's almost like casuals invaded the fandom after the series went to Steam. Hmm.
>>
>>4196790
People who praise the non-bump system games are babies themselves.
>>
The goddamn fucking slippery ice maze is reason enough to declare Oath the worst game in the series, and maybe of all time. Fuck whoever came up with that level with a rusted fork.

Are the PSP and Steam versions of Felgahan identical? I heard they made the bosses easier in the PSP one but don't know if that's true.
>>
>>4198985
PSP has regen during boost.
>>
>>4199007
That's all? I don't remember having any problems with it on PSP but I'm getting my ass kicked by the first castle boss on Steam. He keeps changing his magic alignment and summoning floor spears. I don't even remember this guy because he was so non-eventful the first time.

Where's a good place to start on Ys series?
>>
>>4200718
Ys I & II or Ys VI

Recommended playing order (modern games):
I & II > VI > OiF > Origin > VII > Celceta > VIII
>>
>>4200718
>Gee I wonder what the 1 stands for
>>
>>4200742
Why does Ys V get so little love?
>>
>>4200996
Feels more like Zelda and is slow
>>
>>4200996
Combat and movement is really clunky
Useless guard button
Useless magic system
They introduced poison for no reason (Thankfully almost no monsters cause it)
Probably the easiest game in the series
Really forgettable soundtrack

It's actually a decent game, it's just not very good when stacked up against any other Ys game.
>>
What's the best way to play the Ys IV on PC Engine? I can never find a decent emu for it.

Also how different is it from the SNES Ys IV? I know some of the characters are the same but are the levels and bosses different?
