How did surround sound in retro games work? It was just L R inputs. was it all matrixed? I recall a few games like Perfect Dark boasting Dolby Surround Sound
Yea it was matrixed. You need a receiver that can do Dolby Pro Logic and it'll do the work. It's a similar technique to how they got Surround Sound on Laserdisc before AC-3.

Awesome, I'll have to hunt around for a cheap 90s surround receiver, i've only ever played with 2 speakers. thanks
The facts seem to be unclear whenever this comes up. I believe it's a left and right front channel, mono rear, no low-frequency from what I gather. I'd like to experience it but the cost to do so is more than I'm willing to pay for so few games. A couple Nintendo games that have surround options in the sound setting actually output this but aren't labeled as being Dolby.
