Shenmue was literal autism. No modern company is going to bother with shit like individually programming every single npc route to make them look like they have a real life and they're not just walking there at random. You can follow them for hours and all of their acts make sense. I know a lot of you guys hate it for being one of the first cinematic experiences™ but the game was just so immersive because of all the little details.

You eat, you sleep, you get a job, you drink, you talk to people, you visit places, you drive a motorcycle, you fight, you play video games at the arcade. You put in quarters at vending machines, you buy stuff. Shenmue is ahead of it's time.

Did you even play it? What makes Shenmue lifelike isn't its art direction, or how big the world was or anything like that, it was Yu Suzuki being a turboautist who obsessively wasted time and money into a ton of minor details most of the players were not even going to notice.

You can make a way better Shenmue in modern times but no one has the patience, money and time to do so. Because it's not worth it.
