Japanon hunts for /vr/ games for you in Japan.

DDR in the palm of your hands/Why won't faggot OP answer my email? Edition

For those who are new to this thread, I am an anon living in Japan who likes to go to secondhand stores and dig through their retro game inventory. Sometimes I get really lucky and sometimes I strike out but there is almost always something interesting.

The purpose of these threads is for people to make requests for items which I will then pick up for them for a 13% commission plus the cost of the item and shipping. You can make a request in this thread or contact me at:

[email protected]

I try to dump most of the pictures I take in these threads but I will also upload all of them to a Google Photos drive so that you can browse them at your leisure if you are interested:

https://goo gl/photos/3PsGdM7DYKkE8Lj9A

You need to add the "." back to "goo gl"

TLDR: OP will try to find games for you for a 13% commission, please email me at [email protected] or post in this thread.

For everyone who has already contacted me, I'm sorry because I have made multiple shipments to some people and haven't even made one to others but I do my best to help everyone. If you feel like I have forgotten about you or are ignoring you please send me another email and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

There's a complete one without the box for 7980 and one with the box but no A/V cable for 6980.

Sadly no AES systems, just some fighting games. I've seen a few Neo Geo CD's but I don't think anybody really wants them.

How you doin' OP? Glad the thread is back.

So I finally gave in and started learning Japanese. I don't plan on moving to glorious Nippon or anything crazy, so there's pressure and I'll just see how it goes and whether I'll stick with it. I realize it requires a lot of time and studying.

So far I've learned Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana aren't much use without grammar or vocabulary, but being able to read Katakana on billboards, packaging and manuals is surprisingly... fun? There's something oddly satisfying about reading and understanding.

My question is this: will this feeling last, or will everything become a tedious chore deep into the kanji?
>>
Hahaha, cool thread.

Reminds me of how I've been studying Japanese for years, lived in Tokyo for a year and am moving back to Japan in 2018.

(Can't wait, desu.)

>>4165480
Not OP, but that depends on how you learn and how well you proceed.

That's weird, that's a boxed copy of Mystic Quest, not Final Fantasy USA. Wonder how that got there.
>>
>>4165480
Kanji will probably become a slog no matter what. You need to try to find reading materials that interest you which will help them stick. Acquiring the Kanji is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for Japanese in my opinion since it's a large hurdle to overcome just to be able to start reading.

Katakana is convenient at first but eventually you'll wish they had just written a word in Japanese so you don't have to guess what foreign word they're trying to say.

>>4165493
That's funny, I hadn't noticed that. Occasionally you will see copies of foreign game for sale and as you'd expect the prices are inflated.
>>
>>4165484
Again, I feel like strangling you every time you shoehorn this blogposting into yet another thread. Good for you, but nobody cares.

>>4165508
Thanks. Any tips on strategies to study kanji? What would be the next logical step after learning the kana, studying grammar first or building up a basic repository of vocabulary?

I know there is a thread on /jp/ about studying japanese, but it's mostly just people shitting on each other for using the wrong particles.
>>
>>4165550
>>4165553
Take your love spat over to /int/ or /jp/ and leave Japanon's thread out of this.
>>
>>4165553
>best possible advice drawn from my experience -> study
Gee wow thanks I sure didn't think of that one, captain obvious.

As your reading comprehension seems to be lacking, I will repeat what I said in my first post here: I am fully aware that it requires a lot of work, and I am also aware that I might just lose interest or simply lack the time to progress. I have bigger fish to fry in my life right now and I am being honest with myself here. This does not constitute a "failure" to me. I am the person who gets to define what does and does not constitute success as far as it comes to personal achievements.

If you read carefully, you'll also see that I wasn't asking YOU for advice, but OP.

Remember: No matter your "mastery" of their language, to them, you will always be just a gaijin.
>>
>>4165558
You are absolutely right.

Sorry, I just hate everything about that guy. Something about this arrogant prick just really ticks me off. I'll stop replying to him now, he isn't worth the time and I don't want to shit this thread up any further.
>>
>>4165521
>>4165521
Different methods work for different people. Some writing to practice stroke order can be good but I get bored with it pretty fast. What works for me is to learn the radicals (the pieces that make up each Kanji) first so that I have an idea of what the meaning probably is.

You probably know about this already but Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig is a good place to start (for remembering the meaning, not necessarily the reading)

I'm not really an expert on the language but if you have any other questions please feel free to email me. I appreciate that you're interested but I want to keep the thread focused on /vr/ things.

>>4165567
>you'll always be a gaijin
Unless you look Japanese, in which case you will be held to impossibly high standards from the moment you arrive. Being a guest in Japan isn't such a bad thing really.

>>4165571
Let's please avoid fighting in these threads. Even if someone is berating you the best thing to do is to just ignore them as they are trying to get a response out of you.

Out of curiosity, do you look into cabinets at all?
>>
>>4166141
Sorry, I don't do this professionally so I only check what is available at retail stores.

Most of the retro cabinets I see are just running emulators, even in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
>>
>>4165431
Yeah the CD is really shitty.
What about MVS?
I suppose those wouldn't be carried either
>>
I approve of this thread and this idea.
Great pics op
>>
>>4166560
I think I saw the stick for an MVS but not the system itself.
>>
>>4165578
Thanks, I've also thought about learning radicals first. I like a structured approach to things, even if it means a bit more prep time. Final question on Kanji: Is stroke order necessary to know if I'll mostly be reading and rarely, if ever, writing? I've heard it makes it harder to look stuff up in dictionaries if skipped.

>please feel free to email me
Thank you for the offer, but I'll probably pass. I've gathered that you're a busy person, so better spend that time responding to request. I think what you're doing is great and don't want to impact that.

Also, excuse the Gaijin quote. I was lashing out at the other guy and I did not mean to depreciate your experience, on the contrary, I've got the impression you are quite confident in what you're doing and happy with your life in Japan.

To get things back on topic, for what price do FDS Cards usually sell? How do high profile games like Metroid/Castlevania/Zelda compare to the cheapest cards available (for writing backups)? I know about overwritten cards, but with a write enabled disk drive, that shouldn't pose a problem.
>>
By the way, this is answering an old question but for those who are interested I can ship a Super Famicom with the cables and one controller for ¥2400 if you live in a country with epacket light service and ¥2800 if you don't.

Some anons had been waiting for me to find a cheaper shipping option.

OP i wish you were here a couple years ago before the canadian dollar went to shit, I havent bought anything online in years because of that. I always wanted tatsujin for the PC engine and a couple other games I dont have yet spriggan but there is no way in hell I would ever be able to afford it :'(
>>
>>4168395
Yeah, they both are. This store tends to have the best prices. It's funny that cart only Sin & Punishment is ¥2900 because they had boxed copies for ¥3000 and ¥3200 a few months ago.

>>4168039
Games with a low language barrier tend to be pricey due to demand overseas. Shmups especially suffer from this. I still see a lot for less than eBay though, especially after you convert the yen to your currency.
>>
how much is outrun on saturn?
>>
>>4168890
Well you can always let me know. Something you want may turn up for cheap. Earlier this year I found a complete Tatsujin for Mega Drive for around ¥4000, maybe less, I can't quite recall.

>>4168962
¥2500 tax included. It says there are scratches on the disc but the standards for scratches here are pretty high and typically they are hard to see. It wouldn't be in the case if it didn't work.

learning katakana takes a day and it will help you a lot in terms of recognizing signs and stuff on menus, since most katakana words are just english words.

I wouldn't bother learning anything beyond that just for a trip unless you have a legitimate interest in the language and culture.

Japanese people don't like secondhand goods. They think that if something isn't new that the quality must be bad. The secondhand stores often emphasize how "eco friendly" buying secondhand is.

In the case of retro games in particular, collecting games just isn't a big thing here due to space and tastes. I think prices would be even lower if not for international demand.

OP here, I'm going to be unavailable for a day or two because of work but when I get back I will upload more pictures.

If you have a question go ahead and ask but I might not get back to you until Sunday.
>>
Since everybody seems to be excited about OP.

What makes him different from the appox. other 5000 french, spanish, american and other gaijins living in Japan and selling retro games?
>>
>>4182039
Normally I ignore these posts but I am going to go ahead and give you an answer.

This isn't a business, it's a hobby. People can see exactly how much something is and no what it will cost before they request it. There is no haggling involved and with only a 13% commission plus PayPal fees the money is usually pennies, especially considering the time it takes to pick things up and send them. The idea is to have a thread to show people interesting /vr/ things while also giving them a chance to pick something up for less than they would find it online. If you have websites or services for finding retro games and hardware from Japan then by all means feel free to post them here. If I can't save people money then I would rather they find things elsewhere.
>>
>>4182096

was just genuinely asking - since I know about a dozen people living in Japan doing the same.

some hiding the prices with their thumbs (looking at you Steve Bailey) or adding a price-based markup on the games.

so by all means - continue doing what you do. wasn't trying to discredit you.
>>
Hey man some time ago I asked you about s-video cables for nintendo and you told me about ones in bad shape, have you seen others in good condition?
>>
Are Mega Drives able to play Genesis games? I'd love to know cheap I could get one if they are compatible, but maybe even if it isn't. Or maybe a Saturn, I dunno.
>>
>>4180449

Ah. OK, Ive just been looking into Sonic's popularity in japan and Ive kept reading internet comments that he is unpopular over there and some guy claimed that he couldn't find Sonic stuff when he tried. I do know that the Megadrive wasn't too successful over there and Sonic and Knuckles didn't sell to hot according to this site.

http://www.vgchartz.com/game/6424/sonic-amp-knuckles/

But ultimately, I couldn't find too much information on the subject.
>>
>>4182156
Yes, if you remove some plastic in the cartridge slot. However, some games have region locking software, so you may need to use a Game Genie or something for that.
>>
>>4182176
>VGChartz

Anon, no... they pull numbers out of their asshole
>>
Have you ever seen a set of bandai original yugioh cards before konami started making them?
>>
OP,

Have you seen a cheap GB Light anywhere? I don't care if they're a little banged up, a good screen and buttons would be enough. I'd probably spring for a gold one that was under 5000¥
>>
I assume you've gotten this request before, and I highly doubt you'd find it but just in case, could you look for LSD: Dream Emulator?
>>
>>4182105
Sorry for being super defensive, I ask questions like that sometimes too. I was just getting sensitive because I started these threads to help people, and of course make a little extra money from my hobby, but I was hoping to spread goodwill on the board.

>>4182116
Not for Nintendo I'm afraid but if anyone is interested I recently found an official Sony Playstation S-video cable and a HORI Playstation S-video cable for 100 yen each.

>>4182156
What this anon said >>4182828 you would have to modify the cartridge slot to get it to work. All Saturns are region locked but you probably knew that already. If you have an Action Replay Plus you can get around region locking though.

>>4183540
I've never even looked but a few of the stores I go to have huge trading card sections. That's really out of my wheelhouse though so if there is anything you are looking for I need you to give me some specifics and the price point that you're looking for. It's likely that the stores will charge a premium but it might still be cheaper than what you would find online.

>>4183790
Quite a few Game Boy Pockets but no Game Boy Light's yet. I will post them in the thread if I do.

>>4184071
I have gotten that request and unfortunately neither that game nor Germs (another oft requested title) have showed up yet but I suppose it's a matter of time.

I will dump some photos later, I don't have a lot more but I want to at least add something new to the thread for people to look at.

My first ever post on 4chan...

Thank you vrjpnguy for my parcel. It arrived yesterday, and I've also just emailed you also to say thanks, so you should know who this is.

Exactly what I asked for - even with my rather odd request.

Parcel arrived to the UK in under a week.

A+ service.

Yes, actually hand spinners are super popular here too. I've even seen them in gachapon machines and at summer festival stalls.
>>
>>4185296
I see, well if you ever see the s-video cables I hope you can pick them up, I'm sure me or other person will be interested on them
Thank you for the reply

What the heck? I should have checked my auto correct before posting.

I've added some new pictures to the photo drive but it's mostly just games and no big shots of the store or shelves this time. I've posted those before though and not much has changed.

For the anon asking about Ace Attorney I did see the third game for GBA in the box for 540 yen after tax.

I also saw Thunderforce II and II for Mega Drive but they were cart only.

Thanks as always being my analog for window shopping in Japan. I forgot the link to the base gallery directory for older images from prior visits. I understand they may no longer be in stock but I just like looking at them.

I am curious to the Wonderswan titles behind the one >>4186975 displays. Are they all the same one?

How much for the Gamecube Twilight Princess pictured in >>4186964 upper right?

Since I have a whole laundry list of games I want, I feel it is unfair to e-mail you a list of "everything" so I just ask about items in individual pictures.
>>
>>4186889
oh fuck i really want that gameboy micro. its region free right?
>>
>>4187569
Correct.
>>
>>4187514
No, actually there are a few different games and I believe they had some in the box (Nobunaga no Yabou). I couldn't take everything off the pegs though because of the time and space required. I often see Digimon games for Wonderswan but not the one that got released in English.

I don't remember the price on Twilight Princess sadly. If it's like the other stores near me then probably between 5000-6000 yen but it could be closer to 4500. I will have to check again when I go back, sorry I couldn't answer.

I appreciate your using the pictures as it can be difficult for me to track shopping lists but if there is something you are particularly interested in feel free to send me an email as it might show up eventually and I can just get it while I'm out.
>>
How much does a famicom recorder go for?
>>
>>4188756
The main Wonderswan game I am looking for is Klonoa. A Makaimura or Guilty Gear Petit are secondary. I know, games with minimal Japanese and action based are more costly but my tastes for games on the system get pretty limited when I haven't played any Digimon nor watch/read Bandai sponsored anime/manga.

If it is at that lower end of prices, I'd consider that pretty fair for a Japanese Gamecube Twilight Princess at this time. I'm just looking for an excuse to utilize a Japanese GameCube.

The real things that I had wanted, which I remembered seeing from the base directory of the gallery in older pictures were a set of Saturn games like Sol Divide, Dodonpachi, and Strikers 1945. Seeing the new pictures, I missed out as it appears others have already bought them. I'll stay on the lookout and hopefully I will be in position to ask for them.

Once again, thanks! Hope to e-mail you soon.
>>
>>4190354
I haven't seen Kronos or Guilty Gear but I did see a Makaimura with the box and instructions for ¥5,400.

Strikers 1945 and Dodonpachi turn up occasionally so hopefully they will show up again soon.

I will try to find out about that copy of Twilight Princess.
>>
>>4190805

>>

>>
>>4191528
Sure, there's another one in the junk section for ¥500 but without the box. Just send me an email.

>>4191724
¥500 if I find useable ones in the junk section and ¥1550-¥2580 if I buy the "nice" ones. It's a bit harder to find cheap N64 controllers though.

>>4191904
I don't usually see GBAs that cheap unless they're in junk but they usually have damaged screens. Normally I'd say they are around ¥1580-¥2480. The brighter backlit GBA was never released in Japan so it would have to be modded.

>>4191929

>>

>>
>>4192524

I see a ¥2000 GBA SP up there, that seemed nice.
But I'm looking for the regular GBA.

Getting both is alright, too. A good condition working GBA, and an SP just for the backlit screen. I'll mod the SP screen to the regular GBA.

The Original SP screen is better than a Chinese AGS-101 replacement, which goes for $40-50, crazy.

2x ¥2000 doesn't seem too bad. Cheaper the better.

But how much would it cost for shipping it to Malaysia Japanon?
>>
>>4165372
Hey anon, any white saturn by you? And how much?
>>
>>4196106
This is an estimate but for a GBA and an SP I would think around ¥800. Does color matter? I can let you know what is available.

>>4196585
Yes, a complete Saturn with a controller and the cords is typically ¥4300-¥4800. If I get one from the junk section it would only be ¥500 but wouldn't include any accessories. I can usually find controllers for ¥300-¥500 but I never see A/V cables sold separately.
>>
>>4197320
¥500 for a junk Saturn? That's cheap af. Have you bought any consoles from the junk pile before?
>>
>>4197630
Yeah, they're hit or miss with disc based systems but I've had a higher success rate with white saturns than grey.
>>

I post pictures of everything. You can see the Saturn prices I got from the pictures in the archive and that really is what they charge for them, at least at the stores near me. If the Hard Offs near you offer a better deal then please post the pictures so that we can see them and if you are so inclined send some to other anons on this board. I've told people in these threads multiple times that if they can find a better deal elsewhere or if another anon in Japan can help them to please go there. I'm trying to help while also enjoying my hobby. If you don't like these threads you're free to leave but don't undermine my integrity. If you're so much better than me then are you actually going to help people or are you just coming into this thread and trying to start shit?

On a different note, if anon is still interested in an orange Gamecube controller for the outer shell I found one in the junk bin for 500 yen. The stick is loose and missing the cover but everything else about it is fine so if you needed you could probably salvage the board inside as well.

I added more pictures to the photo drive, here is the link: https://goo gl/photos/rKjvAjyivfXtc7CF8

I will dump some here too for people who just want to have a look but I won't post all of them because there are quite a few and some are figures instead of /vr/. Somebody asked me a while back about JoJo SAS's and I found a number of them at this store.

Breaking news for anon who asked about twilight princess. It's better than I thought. Only ¥4500 plus 8% sales tax. That's about ¥1500 cheaper than I've seen at other places near me. They have two so I'm not too concerned about it selling out.

Damn, Panzer Dragoon Azel soundtrack but it's ¥12000 plus 8% tax. There's also some kind of mini soundtrack selects for ¥1800 plus tax and the original Panzer Dragoon soundtrack for ¥2000. I'll upload these pictures later.
>>
>>4198564
Sure but just to reiterate I ask for a 13%commission of the item's after tax price. If that's still cheaper than that other service then I can do it for you.

Is it something thst can be ordered online or so I need to pick it up in person? I'm not in a big city so that could be an issue.

Finally the statue in front of the yamaguchi manga souko, when I get a credit card I might get the other games I want online. There is not much choice for used games in yamaguchi prefecture. Remember kids, Japan is not like it is in the anime.

I'm looking for Gun slinger girl vol.1
All gun griffon games
All PS1 and SNES versions of smt 1,2, if and mt1&2 for SNES.

I would love raido 2 special edition, but I can wait to pay for that later. Shit is like $80.

That Xbox One is only twice as expensive as that boxed Megadrive. Does this mean that there's a high demand for MD or very low for the XBO?

That looks like pretty standard pricing for an Xbone, and the Mega Drive is kind of a niche console in Japan from what I understand, so I can imagine the price being fairly high.

My moon is pretty meh. Besides translating it I would have to find someone to change all the dialogue. I'm not sure if the engine for if is the same as smt2 . In all seriousness altus should release it for the West. It's a shame what we are missing. I'm still kinda disappointed that altus localized the inferior version of smt1&2 to the West. There gba version is so ugly.
>>
>>4199218
There Japan version has nocturne with raidou in it, so that's why it's expensive. American version of the special edition is nice too.
>>
