Are there any 90s visual novels as good as True Love?

Also, let's have a thread for erotic retro games in general like Leisure Suit Larry.
>>
>>4156292
There's no English patch for this is there?
>>
It's a dating sim, not a visual novel.
>>
>>4156315
At least try google searching before outing yourself as an EOP.

I really like True Love but still hope people can experience the greatness of Tokimeki someday.
>>
>>4156292
YU-NO and everything else by the same author
>>
>>4156292
YU-NO, DESIRE, Eve: Burst Error, Doukyuusei/Kakyuusei, Tsui no Sora (though Subarashiki Hibi is effectively a remake and is better in every way). Not really VNs, but the Rance games are pretty good (though again, you're better off playing the remakes).

Unfortunately, most '80s and '90s eroge are pretty bad, even a lot of the famous ones.
>>
>>4156406
I tried googling Doukyuusei and some yaoi anime came up, lol

>YU-NO, DESIRE, Eve: Burst Error,
Hiroyuki Kanno was pretty great, I don't even like VNs but I loved his stuff.

Dividead was awesome, but the thing is it's still cleverly disguised haremshit. If you have low tolerance to anime and haremshit you'll hate it.
>>
>>4156457
People who hate harem play eroge?
>>
>>4156460
Yes, and eroge often times doesn't have worthless vacuums of protagonists with no redeeming qualities whatsoever drowning in doe-eyed women of different backgrounds.
>>4156457
What he said
>>
>>4156463
Harems don't necessarily have those either.
>>
>>4156460
I was disappointed when I found out Dividead took place in a highschool setting. Also the oldschool adventure elements are kinda annoying, you have to really exhaust every menu option and search and visit every room multiple times before setting off the flag that activates the next plot advancing event, it gets really tiresome after a while I'm glad modern AVGs got rid of this design choice.
>>
>>4156473
Yu-no is the only game where I could tolerate that because they masked it with a point and click interface. It felt more involved than working down a laundry list.
>I was disappointed when I found out Dividead took place in a highschool setting.
What would you have preferred?
>>
>>4156479
I don't know, I read about the supernatural mystery setting and I pictured something different in my mind, I still liked the game though.
>>
Protip: learn Japanese.
>>
>>4156506
Any Jap only recommendations?
>>
I downloaded sega saturn and dreamcast emulators so I could play doukoku soshite and it's sequel, but the gameplay mechanics made me drop it. Like searching a box and finding nothing interesting but needing to search that same box later in order to advance the plot with absolutely no hint that you had to go back to that specific box. Girls were cute though
>>
>>4156508
What genres?
>>
Where the fuck do you download these old ass Japanese Windows games?
>>
>>4156542
Google. Unfortunately there is no central hub collecting them.
>>
>>4156508
White Album, the 1998 original.
Shizuku
Kizuato
Nijuuei
Sayonara wo Oshiete
>>
>>4156563
>Shizuku
>Kizuato
The writing in these is frankly pretty poor, though I guess if you're interested in them for their historical significance, go for it.
>Nijuuei
>Sayonara wo Oshiete
These are good, but not '90s. Nijuuei at least is technically /vr/ due to the PS1/Dreamcast ports, but I'd recommend playing the PC version.

Isaku (遺作), 1995 for PC98 and DOS, and some 97 Windows version with a whooping 256 colours. Point and click adventure and the movement between rooms is like a dungeon crawler. You have to escape from an abandoned building an make sure no one of your classmates is kidnapped
The sequels Shuusaku (臭作) and Kisaku (鬼作) are other kind of gameplay, more about schedule planning to balance job and getting girls, you play as the villain this time. If you go for Eri Takabe in Shuusaku you'll be in for a wild ride.

>>4156424
Kek, happens to me with Shusaku Endou, at least they have different Kanji
>>
>>4157246
>PC98 and DOS
Isn't that redundant? It's not like it had other relevant OS.
>>
>>4157250
Yes and no. The PC-98 runs a modified version of MS-DOS, but the hardware architecture is quite different from IBM compatibles, so games written for one won't work on the other. Many PC-98 games were ported to DOS/V as well, though far from all of them.
>>
>>4156292
Kanon ENTERPRISE EDITION
>>
>>4157772
In a Japanese context DOS normally refers to PC98 even though computers from Toshiba or Fujitsu also used MS-DOS.
DOS/V is pretty much a myth. Good luck finding any games for it.
>>
>>4156545
There used to be dedicated threads here, with a sticky denoting such places

Are VNs talked about in Saenai Heroine any gud?
>>

>>Are VNs talked about in Saenai Heroine any gud?
Like what? I haven't read it.

Saekano was written by Maruto Fumiaki, so I imagine if anything it mentions stuff like White Album 2, which is good but has nothing to do with the original.

I remember Critical Point fondly.
It's all you can expect out of an hgame from that period. It's a glimpse into how fucked Japanese culture was going to become in the future.

3 sisters story is pretty good. You can either be a good guy or a complete asshole.

I faintly remember some other games from the 90s. But nothing really stand out... Princess Maker 2 maybe? That's kinda lewd.
>>
>>4162079
some Tokimeki Memorial games were mentioned but I don't remember which.

Any visual novel/dating sim otaku here? Can you please help me?

>1-How could a person get their hands on VNs (and eroges) at the time?
Brick-and-mortar stores, mail/Internet order, Comiket and similar gatherings. Not much has changed, really. Japan isn't shy about selling adult materials in normal stores, so you could walk into any PC shop and probably find at least a few titles. There were specialty shops as well, of course.
>2-Were there non-lewd pieces, just story oriented like S;G?
Sure. The Saturn library was full of them. Popular eroge were frequently ported to consoles as well, just like today.
>3- If I was visibly underage in, say, the mid-late 1990s, would how could you get your hands on VNs/eroges etc?
How did kids anywhere get porn back then? Older friends, finding your dad's stash, that creepy uncle, etc. By the mid-late '90s the Internet was a thing, so kids could just download pirated eroge from a BBS.
