Anyone know if you can trade pokemon from a cart that has a dead battery to one that doesn't?
I know the game has to save before trading, so will this stop the trade?
I want to get all the starters by trading from Gold to Crystal.

afaik saves don't need battery to be stored if the system is on

That's good to know. It's been so long since I last played, and I couldn't find anything online to answer this question.
If the battery is dead then you already lost your saved data, unless the you've been running the game non-stop .
The SRAM on the cartridge is powered by the gameboy when it's on. As long as the gameboy remains on and the cartridge is inside it will retain its save data.

I know that. But my plan is to play crystal up until I can trade, then save (it has a new battery)
Then I can play hold up until I can trade, then repeat to get the other 2 starters

This, you can save... but don't expect the save to still be there when you turn on the game again, if the battery really is dead (which it most likely is if we're talking Gold/Silver)
But for trading, it should work.

There was a glitch for capturing the starters.
