I've been reading/watching "Made in Abyss" lately, and I find its style (aside from the grimdark/gore) reminds me of some of the 3D rpgs from the PSX/early PS2 era.
>rich pastoral environments
>intricate bulky clothing designs on cute characters with lots of leather, bits of metal, backpacks, etc
>lovingly designed comfy "lived in" interiors
>lots of weathering detail anywhere
I don't know what specific games this reminds me of, but I feel like it's reminiscent of some of the not-quite-mainstream jrpg/exploration-adventure games, like Dark Cloud and Dewprism (Threads of Fate). Could anyone recommend some other titles that fit this style?
NotRetro, but somewhat related since they emulate old styles.
The Etrian Odyssey games on the NDS/3DS have a similar aesthetic and atmosphere, and the early manga really brought the roguelike Brogue to mind.

Why are two young men being chased by a vagina monster?

That vagina monster is literally the least awful thing that ever happens to them.

Wait, I considered watching this but held of since it's not really the kind of genre i normally watch.
Is the anime as graphic as that? If yes, it's still not really what I normally watch but maybe I'll look into it just for curiosity's sake

Anime hasn't gotten to the dark parts yet, but I expect they'll sanitize it just a little bit. It alternates between being extraordinarily brutal and fascinating. It's kind of depressing in a way. The world building is extraordinary but I suspect the author just might be an actual psychopath.

This is what I was thinking also.
