Anyone know a semi-decently written JRPG with a great sense of pacing/scope that really gives that "epic" feeling? Most FF games are perfect examples.

Dragon Quest series. Sweet home.
The first dragon quest is one character no party rpg though.

if you want "FF but not", Rudra no Hihou has sky trains, undersea empires, a world destruction countdown, a fun magic system, you even die!
The only two jrpgs with good pacing are chronol trigger and panzer dragoon saga, both are less than 20 hours yet are as satisfying as 50 hour games because you don't spend 25 of them in battles

Rance 3
Really makes you feel like you are leading a liberation campaign.

Enjoyed what I played of shining force 2

Shining Force 3 for the Dreamcast is also a good game with the translation patches and whatnot.
Persona 2 is not epic fantasy, but it's a fucking fantastic JRPG before the series took a very different approach from 3 onwards. I like SMT a lot though.
Legend of Dragoon for PS1 is also an excellent game.

ATLUS must not want my money, because I would give them all of it for a full remake of the P2 duology with an updated battle system and lowered encounter rate. Best plot and cast of the Persona games, by far.

Secret Of Mana 1 & 2 (i.e. Seiken Densetsu 3)
