On topic, Saria was too perfect for this world. Didn't discriminate against you for not having a fairy, gives you your first ocarina, has her own song that lets you communicate with her for clues, chill with becoming a sage to help you out, and overall respects your independence and is content to remain a good friend. It was the first time i happened to play a game with a real story when i was 12.
I was overwhelmed anyways but I remember I loved Saria and it made me sad that she could never go with you. Later in the game, she is even trapped in that realm must be real lonely there.
The Forest Temple and everything around the woods has a special atmosphere i never found again in a game.

OoT had some pretty great girls in general, though maybe that's just my nostalgia talking.

Saria is everyone's first waifu when they start playing OoT. Part of OoT's charm is learning to love these kinds of game girls and what they represent in the story. Their designs are cute and their dialogue is written full of affection and comfort, but they also provide the player with concrete goals and direction to the game's challenges. Part of growing up is realizing the pros and cons of loving digital girls. A young player will eye the girl models up and down, analyzing their design and appreciating their visual beauty without fear of being chastised for staring. Older players will talk to the girl characters over and over for new dialogue, and that love dies a little when they realize that these characters run out of new things to say.

I always thought of the girls and women in OoT to be the different stages of female maturation. Ahem.
Saria is how they start: nice, encouraging, gal pal. Ruto is when they start getting bossy and demanding. Nabooru is the rebelious teen. Impa is the professional and zelda is the final stage: expeirenced wise leader type. Mind you, most of the females I know and grew up with stay with nabooru, but some have managed to getbto Impa's level. Very few have hit Zelda status.Majority rules, afterall.
Maybe it's generational thing. I grew up in the late 80's early 90's and we were taught to not believe everything we hear and to not follow every trend. Whether or not my contemporaries listened is another matter altogether.

What was the point of any of these side-characters in Ocarina. Felt like all the notable characters ended up being sages or whatever. Kind of felt shoehorned, like that bandit girl was brought in because they ran out of characters to make sages.

Prefer Majora's Mask in this aspect, has a much busier world where not all the characters are plot-devices.

All the side characters are there to show that even if you have some kind of power or ability that sets you apart from the rest you still need help from others to accomplish great deeds. Be it a mentor that's always around somewhere or the briefest of contact that allows two people to help one another in that small window of time.
I swear, people rag on millenials but it seems we're the last generation able to interpret abstract ideas. Honestly, I hate being slapped in the face. The early games were awesome because you had to use your imagination to bring the deveolpers vision to life.

i just think it's lazy that the only characters you know end up filling spots for the sage circle. Ocarina is a great game but my only complaint is that the world itself is very barren. This is understandable as its the first 3d entry in the franchise.

That and it was rushed because the 64 was rushed. Damn shame too. We wouldn't be having this debate if they had the time needed. But 3D was the new bandwagon and apparently I was one of the minority who could've waited a couple more years while they worked out the kinks

Ganondorf, for all his power, will always have to worry about traitors, uprisings or other countries taking over, because he has no wisdom to properly run a kingdom and no courage so he's always threatening those around him.
Wisdom: Zelda. For all her knowledge, she can't stop the Ganon from exercising his power, nor the courage to openly help her people, hence the disguise. She got courage later, kinda, but then gets captured almost immediately.
Courage: Link. Enough courage to complete any task, easy to suicidal. Not enough wisdom to know Ganondorf wqs jus using him an not enough power to do anything grand, just small steps towards a greater goal.

What? If anything the N64 got released way too late. Nintendo was working on it since 1994 and it got delayed several times till the end 1996 for most of the world and even early 1997 for Europe. Also, they've been working on OoT since 1995 IIRC so compared to other releases in the time that is far from rushed.

3D gamespaces and the tech to do it was new, as far as consoles went. Panasonic, Sony, Sega, even Atari all developed the the hardware to create 3D games within SNES' lifespan. But they bitched out and took the easyvway out: CD. Nintendo stayed with cartridge format (after tinkering with Sony with CD tech. Way to create your own competition Nintendo). Limited space and not as pretty graphics as CD. Again, damn shame. At least Acclaim didn't totally abandon or otherwise half ass their efforts with Nintendo. At least one more or maybe one and a half year exrta time would've been etter.
That's why the graphics expansion pak HAD to be released, at a tremendous cost to Rare (I REALLY hope that event wasn't a reason for them selling out eventually).
