Why does his face look like that?
Also General Adventure Island thread.

>Why does his face look like that?
Because you're using a disgusting filter.

Adventure Island 1 was always on every multicart for Famiclone cart, it's a very popular game.
The sequels are even better, they made 4 Adventure Island games for NES alone, so I guess it was popular back then.
IMO it's a great platforming series, maybe one of the best, that got a bit forgotten over time.
>>
I liked the nes games. Something felt off about Super AI.

The third was one of my favorites to rent when I was a very young child. I sort of forgot about its existence until i rediscovered a on /vr/ in a recommendations thread several years ago .
I have since played all of them except the fourth on nes and second super adventure island. The first three are some of my favorite games not just on the nes of platformers and games in general. Each installment improved on the previous, adding gun new enemies and gameplay elements as well as more detailed island level themes. The controls are great, the artwork is colorful and nice , and music really stands out among some of the system's greats.
Super was pretty disappointing compared to the first three for me, but is still a good game. I don't even care that they didn't have dinosaurs in it; my main complaints are that it was too short, too easy, and, most importantly, they did away with the run/momentum mechanic of the previous nes games. The music is pretty swell though.

Never heard of it. I suppose I should have rephrased my post as i think there are gameboy games I haven't played either.

Careful. One of my Wonder Boy posts was already deleted from this thread. Janitors have no sense of humor today.

Super Adventure Island 2 was one of the best games on that console

Super AI 2 is tansaku.
The first Super AI isn't as good as the NES games, but it gets points for having Yuzo soundtrack and probably the comfiest art direction ever.

I got nothing. While on the topic of AI, have a bee-waifu that looks like it's something outta Rhythm Heaven, but in the 80s.

It has the aesthetics of Super Adventure Island but with the metroidvania gameplay of Adventure Island 4 except it is fleshed-out and not the really basic stuff you find in AI4

OP here. I just grabbed what I could find on bing images. But filter or no, he has a weird homestar runner chin that doesn't look human, and it carries on outside of the 8-bit generation.

I don't know in the west but in japan they where huge, for a lot of time they where the hudson famicom flagship games, it even got a very popular anime show.
>What does /vr/ think about them?
I am not /vr/ but 1-4 are fantastic games, Super is shit but Super 2 is pretty top tier, also New Adventure Island is a must play.

I know this is kinda off topic but since it is adventure island...

Ai2 is my favourite game ever and since its has been forgotten over time (except for horrible game cube and wiiware versions), ive been developing on my free time a fangame. Im using ai2/3 graphics and sound, but the twist is that istead of having fixed islands and levels, each island and each level is generated (cave levels still are cave levels, ocean levels still are ocran levels and so on). The idea is too give the ai gameplay as true as the nes games, but "infinite" levels. Imagine ai meets bindinh of issac.

Anyhow, i can handle the development, but its the licensing that has been bothering me. Ai currently belongs to konami since they bought hudson (with all their ips). I think my project would be great as a mobile game for example but i doubt konami would show interest on that, and buying an ip is way out of my range, so

Any advice on that part?
>>
>>4101107
Just release it for free for the fans of Adventure Island.
I don't think Konami will give a fuck if it's free, but if you're thinking about charging for it, then yes, expect C&D out the ass.
>>
>>4101107
Can we see some of what you have thus far?

This pic reminds me:
When I was a kid, I didn't know that he was holding a medallion in his hand and thought he was just holding a really tiny shield and that confused the fuck out of me.

What i have done so far is a lot of code controlling the level/island generation, im still in the process of ripping sprites, when im done with that ill start coding movement (i have a lot of code i can copy paste for that from another projects).

The only part of the code i havent even started is the inventory, im not sure if i should change anything at all, if you guys have any idea on improving it let me know, and general suggestions appreciated

Tl;dr: I have nothing with graphics to show yet
>>
>>4101107

Release it for free, Konami won't give a fuck.

If you actually want to make money you'll need to pay someone to make new assets for you and rebrand it.

It was a japan-only Famicom title, and it came very late into the console's life, in 1994.

I only know about the multiple bootlegs these games had.
I don't know why people wanted to bootleg this shit so much.

Not that hard, but this is my favorite one.

Adventure Island is inferior to Wonder Boy, which itself is kinda repetitive.

Haven't played much of 2 or 3 but they are okay. Control is a lot better. 3 is barely any different.

New Adventure Island is an incredibly fast paced and fine tuned game with some of the best graphics on the console. Extremely strong control and manageable difficulty (unlimited continues but reasonable to beat in a single continue)

Super Adventure Island unfortunately feels sluggish and uneventful. The swimming levels are also a waste. The "Yuzo Koshiro" soundtrack is eh

Have not played Super 2 but I hear it's a Monster World clone

Adventure Island IV is a solid open-ended game but of course level design is not as interesting. Drags on a bit by the end.
>>
>>4103707
this game along with Bonk 2 and Castlevania: Rondo of Blood were single-handedly the best Turbografx platformers.

Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, WB III Dragon Trap and Liquid Kids were also really good
>>
>>4103925
>Adventure Island is inferior to Wonder Boy
Maybe in terms of graphics, barely, but Higgins>kid, and the music is better on AI.
But otherwise both games are the same.

You should play more of AI 2 and 3, really great, solid platformers.
AI 3 might be my favorite platformer of 3rd gen, maybe.

i never got the appeal, as one poster mentioned, 3 was good with the animals you could ride, but the original just seemed kinda blah. even at the time there were better side scrollers with more interesting themes. Also the character is kind of mario without the charm. i don't get it.
