The hitboxes of the lances that stick out from the walls on Labyrinth and SBZ3 are really big, you get hit before actually touching them.

Fun fact about the levels in Sonic 1. They were meant to go from natural to progressively more man made.

I'd say 2 is easier than 1 for the most part, up until the two final bosses. Those are way harder than anything 1 throws at you.
