I think autoscrolling levels with disappearing blocks actually combine to make the two easier overall since by autoscrolling you know that there will be a block appearing somewhere on screen.

There is literally nothing wrong with autoscrolling, even in a platformer

I think my major complaint with them is simply memorizing the pattern slows you down on your first go. Whereas you can look at a screen and quickly visualize a route to travel while you're moving, blocks slowly materialize one by one forcing you to wait until the next appears to proceed. Even worse are the kind of blocks that disappear right before another appears because then you have to stand somewhere safe and watch the entire pattern unfold to create a travel route through them.

I don't remember ever having a big problem with them. As long as you know the rhythm you can usually just jump in a direction. You want to go and land something, or if it's a complication you should have seen it while you were hopping up to it.

I read Nintendo power so I don't know if o just subconsciously know all the patterns so well they are trivial to me now.

It's more an issue with romhacks, I've got the base games memorized. Romhacks do a lot of "block your standing on disappears while one appears directly above your head" kind of thing which doesn't really give you any good way to handle it going in blind.
