Hey, /vr/. Can somebody SparkMandrill me on the various Mega Man series?

I played a bit of X (couple of Snes ones) and some Classic (3+) back in the day, but no Legends or Battle Network / Zero and never really felt like touching the stuff again afterwards until now.

So: Play order suggestions? Best series? Best game in each and/or overall? Absolute must-plays? Anything to avoid?

All the Classic series are good. Ignore the naysayers that shit on 7 and 8; they're aesthetically different than the previous six and autists hate change.

Mega Man X1 to X4 are good. X5, X6 and X8 have mixed opinions - you'll need to play them yourself in order to form your own viewpoint, but play the others first. X7 is literal garbage - avoid it unless you truly wish to see Mega Man at its worst.

Battle Network is a mixed bag - some are great, some are awful/boring. With my little experience, I know that 3 is great and that 1 and 2 aren't as good. I can't speak for the rest. Don't worry about the different "versions" - they're really not that big a deal.

Star Force is just Battle Network with a few fancy changes. If you like Battle Network, try it out.

The Mega Man Zero games are fairly decent all around - the entries get better as they go, however, so take that how you will.

Mega Man Legends is probably the most divisive series in the franchise, since it's Mega Man's first transition to 3D, featuring actually decent voicework compared to Mega Man's other games, and they play so little like the previous games - platforming is downplayed in favor of adventure and exploration and some more RPG-ish elements. Great, solid games, though some people don't like them for one reason or another. The cliffhanger will never be resolved.

It's a substitute for "redpill". There's a ot of really inventive ones, like /m/'s "can you redshoulder me on x".

X5 and X6 are better than X4, and X8 is one of the best in the series. You yourself said autists hate change, and that's the only reason X8 gets shit on. That and X7 being legitimately garbage so lots of people didn't give it a chance.

While I've yet to play the GB games, BN, more than maybe a minute of 64/Legends, and maybe some of the Zero games or other spinoffs, I can say that, outside of X7, you should certainly try all of the classic and X series. I don't recall a particular stand-out bad game in the bunch - again, outside of X7, which I recall as being a chore. The play style allows you to pretty quickly get a taste of all the levels if you want to get a feel for a particular title, so it is certainly worth spending a few minutes with each.
>>
>Forgotten and underrated tier:

Rockman & Forte. Play the SNES version with a fan translation.

The GB games. 2 is shit and was made by other devs, but all the other ones are good, and they mix and are a re imagination of 2 NES games into one each time. 5 is an exception and has an all new story, all new robot masters and stages, etcd

>Great spin-off tier
Power Battle and Power Fighters. Emulate with Mame.

Battle & Chase. Mega Man mario kart. I've been playing this lately and it's surpringsly good, and has some unique stuff for a kart batle racer as the "adventure" mode is based on earning your adversaries car parts to tune up your car and find the most suitable parts for each course. Only problem is, it was only released in Jap and PAL. The PAL version is shit, they even took out a lot of stuff like cutscenes, etc, so I've been playing the Jap version with the help of FAQs, and my own screenshots for menus and car parts.

>you've played it all and you're still begging for more tier

There are tons of MM fan games, or games obviously inspired by MM. For classic, MM Unlimited is probably the best.

Battle and Chase is best played on NTSC-J with a translation reference on the side. The real problem with this game is that is runs at 20 fps (not kidding), it's limited to digital steering, and a fuck ton of built in input lag.

>>
>>4098178
this, Battle network 5 was really fun to play. I'd suggest Protoman version, as I found him to be better than Colonel, but that's just my opinion.

ZX is underratted, ZX advent is bad

if you're gonna play the Zero series which is probably the best in gameplay/story
ply the collection on the DS. makes Z1 playable and adds some small new features.
>>
Heads up, the Mega Man X collection for PS2 is available for $12 bucks in amazon right now.
The collection is great, all games run at native resolution, Megan Man X 1-2 are Snes and 3 - 6 are the PS1 release.
The games run at full speed without slowdowns or glitches. It also works in PCSX2 software mode perfectly and it doesn't needs a beast CPU to run.
>>
>>4098724
Mega Man's power is the ability to copy abilities. Why the fuck would a game revolving around Zero give him that ability? I like the fact that the devs tried to make it it's own thing rather than just copying what past games had done because of 'tradition'.

Out of them all the first Legends is probably my second favorite game ever, ever
>>
>>4099953
it has 2 robot masters from MM8, and also re-uses other things like some enemies, but even when it re-uses graphical stuff, gameplay wise it's completely different.

MM&B has a completely different feel, and completely different level/enemy design philosophy compared to another classic MM games.

>>4099958
That's what I'm doing but there is no translation of the entire menu to switch parts, which isn't easy to navigate if you don't moonspeak, so I'm using screenshots I take myself to help.
I've already beat wily 3 times and beat 2 shadow racers + got the respective secret parts

Didn't notice any input lag. also 20 FPS really? I'm playing the NTSC-J version adn it feels a lot smoother than the PAL version.
>>
>>4100927
Also some other robot masters were submissions for MM8 which ended up not being used, like Magic Man and Pirate Man.

But some others like Dynamo Man iirc were designed by mangaka Ariga.

I was planning on taking side by side screenshots as a translation reference and post it on a site or something. I remember checking the internal frame rate of the game and it was actually 20-22. In fact if you overclock the emulator by 1.5-2x, you can speed it up to 30 fps which feels a shit ton better but it also increases the game speed by a bit. I think the PAL version is just as shitty as NTSC-J in performance.

Cool, maybe this link can help, I've got screenshots of 45 parts out of 48 (missing Wily body and the 2 last secret parts)

Screenshots show the Jap text, name, for the part, and name of the screenshots tells which part that is. I didn't name the screenshots based on the parts names, but rather "type of part - character"

http://www41.zippyshare.com/v/u9Vcpm0x/file.html

If you're interested I'll let you know when I get the last parts, if ever. They're the hardests to get.

I don't care if you use them. Would be nice if you could have screenshots of every menu, but also every part in the garage, with translations and descriptions (like not only giving the translation of the name of the part, but telling which racer the part belonged to)

Just beat the 3rd shadow racer! And all that's left for the 'normal' races are Wily for his body. Maybe I'll get all 48 parts after all.

Draws porn of the franchise, while nothing sexual he has done nude pictures of Roll and Tron. It's a pretty well known a lot of artist draw porn of thier work but I suppose the unquestionable fact they are underage technically makes him a bit questionable.

The series has had some controversal figures. Robert Smith, the voice actor of Tiesel in the English version, was arrested in 2007 after being found to have CP. What a fucking waste of talent, guy was a great voice actor but just had to throw his life away.
>>4105331
This actually bothered me for awhile as well. "MegaMan" is the correct term from what I have gathered, still both logically work so using "Mega Man" isn't really wrong either.
>>
>>4105360
>I'm working with Battle & Chase

Are you saying you're making a translation?
>>
>>4105398
Yes I was going to share it once I finished it but it's not done. It's not even a translation since the point is to provide the minimum amount of information to make the game playable, not translating stuff like character dialogue.
>>
>>4105389
> "MegaMan" is the correct term from what I have gathered
How so? All games use "Mega Man", and while some early games make the Robot Masters' names a single word, basically any middle to later entry in the series keeps names consistently split, except where space issues ensue like in >>4105360
>>
>>4105389
They are robots, and pre-reploid era ones at that, so their very age is artificial. Biological age of organic beings =/= automaton age
>>
>>4105407
I believe in Japan it is one word, "RockMan", but as I said it really us a matter of what you prefer.
>>4105412
I'm talking logically here. Roll still looks like a little girl, to many the fact he draws of porn would be seen as abnormal. I'm speaking from a strictly social standpoint.

>>

>I believe in Japan it is one word, "RockMan"

It is one word, but it's officially spelled "Rockman". So the correct adaptation would have to be "Megaman", not "MegaMan" nor "Mega Man"
>>
>>4096660
> play order suggestions
It's probably preferable to play Classic before X since the latter builds on it; if you must skip some, MM2 is a good entry point to avoid getting turned off by the first game's slightly shoddier design, and X4 also works since the visual upgrade and gameplay tweaks are more pronounced there than between other entries
>>
>>4100675
BN 5 has a DS version with content from both versions. You know that, right?
>>
>>4105389
>>4105407
In the US, until X4, it's been consistently Mega Man with the space in the title across the board.
From then on, they've used "MEGAMAN" all caps, one word in the logos, mirroring how Rockman is one word (and has always been one word).
When writing the game's name in normal text (eg, on Capcom's website), it's been Mega Man in all official capacity.

Mega Man and Mario are kind of the opposite in terms of level designs though. The bosses are the real appeal, and there are few memorable elements in the actual levels themselves beyond the "theme", and most only count because they're kind of annoying.

X1 is DOS only. There is nothing wrong with it, except midi music, meaning that on top of running in DOSbox, you'll have to make that midi sound good (= not windows default midi device).

X3 PC is like the PS1/Saturn versions, meaning CD musics, animated cutscenes, etc... it seemed very solid, and played well, except that when arriving at the fortress there was a visual glitch preventing me from playing more, as the backgrounds wouldn't show up. I tried to look it up, tried different settings, compatibility mode, etc and nothing helped. I also tried looking for another ISO, mine would be faulty, but it's the only one I found too.

X4 PC version is great. Had no trouble running it and it plays very smoothly, very fast, inexistant loading times, etc

No issue playing the PC version of X5 either. Same as X4. But X5 is shit, I dropped it a couple of stages in.

AFAIK there is no X2 PC version.
So for X1-3, I say emulate the SNES versions first, and if you care enough, check the PS1/Saturn versions for the animated cutscenes and CD musics.
The advantage of the SNES version of X3 is the "Zero Project" romhack.

MM3, 4, 5, 2, 1, 6, that order. X, X2, X3, X4, X6, that order. If you find a copy of X5, burn it. Never played X7. As for Legends and Legends 2, those were my absolute favorites of practically any game. I bought a bloody VGA adapter to play them 'cause I didn't own a TV.

People hate on MM7, I always liked it. Bought a cartridge about 15 years ago for 40 bucks from FuncoLand. I understand it's appreciated somewhat in value.

Never played MM8, but have heard mixed reviews. I hear MM9 and 10 were pretty good but never played those either.

5 is still the best, and X3 is still the best.

Best of luck, chum. Mega Man was and remains my favorite series of games. Hope you enjoy them as I have. :)

I've got no idea how anyone can ever say X5 is worse in any way than X6. The stages in X6 are a mind numbing copy-pasted mess of fuck you.
in particular, there isn't anything in X5 remotely as dumb as Blaze Heatnix's stage, god damn

X7 is a mess right out the gate that handles sluggishly and has an awful 3D camera.
X8 should be okay but it's super gimmicky and has some real fucking bullshit stage design in spots that reminds me too much of X6. It's not terrible, but worse than it should be.

I love MM7. First time I played it I had issues with the size of the sprite, and I felt like sometimes it was impossible to see what was ahead due to the scale... But I learnt to really love the game, and these are the kind of issues that disappear once you know the game and the enemy placement

You should definitely play MM8.
Also MM&B, which as usual doesn't get nearly enough recognition even though it's just as good as 7 and 8, if not better in some aspects, because at least it's challenging in a refreshing way.
>>
>>4114508
Battle & Chase is surpringsly good, near great even, and the idea behind it isn't any more ridiculous than Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing.

It's not like I recommended Rockman EXE WS, the wonderswan version of Rockman&Forte, or MMII GB. Those have issues, though I'd still play those rather than X5 given the choice.
