First thread on /vr/.

What are the top 10 games that are fun to play from 1980-2000?
Playing Link to The Past right now, its pretty good.

As far as I'm aware right in the 90s games started becoming full with stuff to do. Before 90s it feels really bland. Am I wrong? Is there anything worth actually playing from before SNES era? Something that will make you go "Hey that was an amazing game that has aged really well"
>>
>>4095174
>top 10 games
I think there is a good half of thousand of TOP games.
>>
>>4095276
I put the top 10 on instinct. What I should have written was "essentials".

Im trying to play the classics by years. Starting from 1990.

>What are the top 10 games that are fun to play from 1980-2000?

It varies person to person just like games from any era. I recommend getting an emulator, trying games and thinking for yourself. Radical concepts for people in this age, but it's a skill that's well worth developing.
>>
I'll give you my list of games I'll always return to:
>Starcraft
>Earthbound
>Super Mario World
>Half-Life (actually playing it right now)
>Turtles in Time
>Sonic 2 or Sonic and Knuckles
>Mario Kart 64
>Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers
>Pokemon Red
>Streets of Rage 2
>>

I know I sound stupid, but thats why I asked if there are any games from before the 90s that you get invested in.

How the fuck am I supposed to pick only 10 from 20 years worth of lots of awesome games? It would only end up being some of my personal favourites, every top 10 someone gives you would be different.
>>
>>4095295
Why do you want to play "the essentials" is the most important thing to consider. Are you looking for games you'll enjoy or are you looking to say you've played the "big games" of the past?

What is it about SNES era games that is appealing to you, what about NES era do you find unappealing? That will help as well.
>>
>>4095297
Might as well give the top 10 games I play the most and contribute to this thread.

1. Doom (PC)
2. Mega Man 3 (NES)
3. Mega Man V (GB. Highly recommended)
4. Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
5. Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis)
6. Final Fantasy V (SNES or GBA remake, it has more content and better translation)
7. Legend of Mana (PS1)
8. Mega Man X (SNES)
9. Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)
10. Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis)
>>
>>4095293
Thanks, I've played half life countless times.

>>4095297
Its kinda my fault for asking such a broad question

>>4095308
Im looking for something to enjoy a lot, good quality games that once you finish you get short term nostalgia.

SNES era seems to have amazing pixelart, controls are way better than on the NES, there are actual plots going on not just linear sidescrollers or grind rpgs
>>
>>4095314
>good quality games that once you finish you get short term nostalgia.

What the hell is short term nostalgia?

Anyways, SNES era is one of the heights of plotless sidescrollers and grindy jrpgs if you ask me. So what kind of games are you looking for?

Something I just made up. Basically you feel sad that you completed a great game.
Im generally looking for games that are "must play before you die" kind of thing. Preferably 1985-1995.

>>4095325
I'll check it out
>>
>>4095297
I agree with this anon

I got a NES when I was ten, and a PC when I was 12 (1995). The major games from those platforms and eras that I was LUCKY enough to get my hands on are what I would always recommend...plus a few outliers I was absorbed by like Faxanadu on NES.

NES
Faxanadu
River City Ransom (aka Street Gangs here in Aus) - multi... or solo for max cash
Double Dragon 2 - multi is best. Get in the zone and kick ass with hyper knees
Super Mario Bros 3 - multi or solo
If you make it through those try Battletoads, shit's hard as fuck if you play without using emulator save cheats. Multi.
Trog - mlti

PC
DOOM II (run it with a 3D engine mod if you can't stand the pixels)
Master of Magic (I still play it for a month in DOSBOX every few years. Wish the attempted remake got going properly, last I read it was a bit shit.
Oh sweet just found a different more basic engine upgrade for those that haven't heard https://www.gog.com/forum/master_of_magic/master_of_magic_hd_multiplayer_remake_by_implode)

These games are fucking great IMO, because I grew up playing them at a very young age, or at a time when I was just a high school student who didn't do homework and just gamed 80% of the time.

As a virgin to each game who never grew up in this era you would probably struggle to get into a lot of them much.

Can't fucking be bothered thinking of more that I think have aged well. Absent from the list are lots of games I loved at the time but would not enjoy going back to now.
>>
>>4095328
Fucking forgot Megaman 2

I still have my NES and a bunch of game carts that somehow never got sold or lost to unpaid long term storage bills by my mum like my Lego did. She was never good with money.
>>
Eh. Why not? I'll throw my top 10 single player games out there. And, yeah, I know Doom has multiplayer. I mean more along the lines of "excluding fighting games and party games (Bomberman, Mario Party)". I could make a top 10 of retro fighters alone.

1. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS)
2. Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB)
3. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (PS)
4. Doom (PC)
5. The Guardian Legend (NES)
6. Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBC)
7. Tyrian (PC)
8. Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (GBC)
9. Monster World IV (Genesis)
10. Vagrant Story (PS)

Battletoads freezes on level 7 or something in 2 player mode, rendering the game unfinishable in multiplayer

Op, you sound like a modern gamer who enjoys "cinematic experiences" more so than actually playing games. Contra, Castlevania and Super Mario Bros. have shit for stories but they are intense on the higher levels and reward you for actually getting better at the game by allowing you to play further into it.

That said there are still older games that fit your criteria and I will attempt to give you a list of games you might like.

1) Half Life. Story is a little anemic but it's way more immersive and loaded than a 1997 FPS has any right to be.
2) Zelda: Link's Awakening. I actually prefer this to LTTP.
3) Earthbound. Modern day RPG. Trippy in places.
4) Chrono Trigger. IMO the best plot in any SNES JRPG.
5) Majora's Mask. Possibly the best Zelda story. You really should play OOT first but IMO it's story is anemic.
6) Ninja Gaiden. This would probably fall into your "boring platformer" argument but this has a real story with cutscenes and everything. Also has infinite continues so just keep trying until you beat it.
7) Mega Man 5. This is IMO the classic MM with the most/best story, but you kinda need to play at least 2 and 3 to fully get it.
8) Sweet Home. Japanese only JRPG (translated) that allegedly inspired Resident Evil.
9) Resident Evil 2. NESfag will disagree but it's generally regarded as the best retro RE game.
10) METAL GEAR SOLID. The pinnacle of stories-in-games and the most modern feeling thing on this list. Impossible to state how much MGS1 influenced gaming going forward. The controls these days are a little obtuse but they function well once you figure them out.
>>
>>4097307
>Contra, Castlevania and Super Mario Bros. have shit for stories
The "stories" of those games which stay out of the way serve as a vehicle for the gameplay action to make sense. They are perfect video game stories that let the actual gameplay experience be the narrative. The intricate stories that came in the past 20 years are utter shit by comparison.
>>
Gaming peaked in the 80s

I can't do top 10 lists that broad.
I'm never certain of my choices and I usually feel differently about a game depending on how long it's been since I played. Or even what point I played last.

For example I considered Kid Icarus my favorite NES game for a while, but then I replayed it recently and realized it's only fun after you get powered up somewhat, and the beginning is a fucking nightmare and I hate it.
>>
>>4095293
>Pokemon Red
I'm a Blue man myself, I can't stand the way /vp/ shits on gen 1
>>
>>4097272
Also a lot more random than PO but it holds up so godamn well. I wish they'd make a pseudo remake with better sprite work and longevity but not changing anything else. All the sequels fucked up the core gameplay.

Actually yes, there are a lot of classic arcade games from the 80s that are worth playing, from Space Invaders and Pac-Man to OutRun and Space Harrier, among many other.
Also, late 80s console games are pretty damn good, Famicom alone is a goldmine.

Ok, I'll actually answer you, since everyone else here is being retarded. The first two Zeldas in the NES are straight up better than LttP. They're genuinely 'meaty' games that are satisfying to explore and play.

If you really want to you can also text play adventure games like Zork, as they likewise gives you tons of freedom to be creative.
