3dfx and their heavy marketing push to make consumers want more powerful graphics processors probably did more to change the landscape than anyone else.
Namco Polygonizer came out in 88. Sega came out with Model 1 shortly after. They used DSPs to generate 3d before 3d specific graphics chips were even a thing.

Probably this. It blew other PC solutions (S3D, MSI, Speedy3D, ATICIF, etc) out of the water. Better graphics and guaranteed improved performance even if the rest your system was weak.
