The fact that hacking a psx and emulating it is way easier than with its counterpart, the n64, do you think it affects how both consoles are perceived?
>>
>>4055343
Playstation sold a lot more units thanks to the piracy.
Yes.
>>
>>4055387
Piracy which didn't matter until the 2000s... Ya huge reason, champ.
>>
>>4055402
He's talking about mod chips and CD burners, you dumbass.
>>
>>4055417
Thanks for repeating what I replied to. Maybe go fuck yourself?
>>
>>4055343
>psx
you nigger
>>
>>4055402
Maybe in your third world country didn't matter until the 00s, but not in mine.
>>
>>4055402
>Piracy which didn't matter until the 2000s

PSX piracy was gigantic even back in the 90s. We all knew one or two people who had thousands of discs to burn for a tenth of the price of originals. I was even recommended to buy a PSX because we could get games (pirated) for it cheap, as opposed to everything else. I got a Saturn instead.
>>
>>4055862
>>4055867
Ya everyone was busy burning those $5 CDRs in 1995 and buying those $80 mod chips. Yep
>>
>>4055874
Maybe not everybody, certainly not in '95 but I grew up in a small town in the UK and had a friend who downloaded and burned Gran Turismo the moment it was out in Japan.

Miss you Pirate Dan ;_;
>>
>>4055914
Downloading half GB in the 90s sounds tough.
>>
>>4055874
Not everyone, but everyone knew a street vendor who could do chipping or burn discs.

CD burning was affordable by the late 90s too.
>>
>>4055874

You would rent a game from video/game rental store, take it home and burn it. If you burned 5 games you immediately got back your investment on CDs and the mod chip.
>>
>>4055874

>1995

You do realise that there's four more years in that decade for the mod and CDs to become cheaper right?

Here in England PSX piracy was rampant. I had over two CD wallet's worth of pirated games to play by the time the PS2 came out.
>>
>>4055914
>>4056037
>>4056039
>you will never ever get rich again from selling burned cds
>>
>>4055402
Nope, I had shitloads of pirated games and pirated/copied games myself in around 1997
>>
Maybe a few people managed to get pirated games, but I didnt know a single person who had any early on. Considering the fact the a CD burner cost about $1000 in 1995 I dont think that would be a huge discount for most people.
>>
>>4056413
Maybe if you'd left the basement every now and then you would have known people. Bootlegs were easy to find and cost a buck here. Millions of people had them.
>>
>>4055402
>until the 2000s
kek

>Maybe a few people managed to get pirated games, but I didnt know a single person who had any early on. Considering the fact the a CD burner cost about $1000 in 1995 I dont think that would be a huge discount for most people.

my friend's dad was a computer engineer at somewhere important.

he taught his kids and their friends(me) how to pirate everything. he let us burn games with his cd burners that he brought home from work. he showed us how to use his z64 to rip all the n64 games we all rented.

he gave my pirated copies of diablo, c&c, and warcraft 2.

he also showed us how to download emulators and roms and english translation patches for pokemon gold and silver before they were released in outside japan.

at one of the highschools i attended, if you dug around in the direcotires on the county's school system server you ended up in some ignorant teacher's unlocked folder full of over 20 gigs of bullshit students had been adding for years. games. emulators/roms. music. porn. software like photoshop/visual basic, etc all on the county's public school system! in the '90s.

piracy has always been a part of gaming and computer science.
>>
>>4057861
Whoa there. If you go around telling babies that piracy wasn't invented by Jesus Krikzz heads are going to start exploding.
>>
>>4055387
Yeah, I'm pretty sure latin america, africa and eastern europe are like 90% of the vidya market. lol
>>
Playstation saw more piracy because it was more popular. Simple as that.

As it was with the SNES. All those cartridges encased in Super Famicom shells were all repro shit that sold for 20 bucks while an original nintendo licensed was somewhere between 120-150 in my country.

But history goes farther back. They were pirating the shit out of NES and Atari 2600 and I'm yet to see someone saying these consoles were popular because of it.

As people pirated stuff with VHS, compact cassettes, floppy disks. It always existed.
>>
Correct me if I'm wrong but bootleg N64 carts can't fucking save.
>>
>>4058183
>Correct me if I'm wrong
OK. You're wrong. Maybe you got some shit that can't save but that doesn't mean they all can't.

In 1998 only 26.2 percent of households in America had internet. Most computers then didn't have CD burners. My family didn't have a computer with a CD burner until 99. I grew up in a small town in middle America, pirated games were almost non existent.

The only guy any of us kids knew who could burn games was this stereotypical 90s edgy hacker teenager. He lived in his uncles basement and had a sawed off shotgun next to his bed and smoked like a chimney. He was totally into Area 51 and government cover up conspiracies. He would show us funny viruses he wrote, and only charge a dollar for a burned game. He was pretty cool.

But he was literally the only one who could burn games for us.
>>
>>4055343
For a brief moment I thought OP's pic was the overworld map from A Link to the Past.
>>
>>4056028
In '96 I had 50mbs cable internet.
>>
>>4055402
>>4055862
How can you guys be so wrong at the same time?
ESPECIALLY in 3rd world countries is where PS piracy was rampant. It was almost impossible to buy a PS system WITHOUT a modchip already installed, and finding original games was also impossible here in latin america.
>but people didn't have CD-R units
Right, but chinese bootleggers did. Stores would buy chunks of bootleg CDs from china, eventually some would invest on CD-R units themselves and do it here, but most of them came from China.
It wasn't until the 2000s that I started seeing stores carrying original PS discs.

Probably piracy was a rare sight in USA and the non-poor Europe countries, but here in latin america, piracy = Playstation.

Show me a single CD writer with software for undera $400 pre 1998.

I'll wait kiddos. I really am sick and tired of your revisionist history shit.
>inb4 I knew a guy who burned them
>>
>>4058958
Did you not read my post where I said the ones doing the bootlegs were the chinese?
It costed more than $400? Big deal, they made millions of bootleg CDs and sold them in bulk to 3rd world countries.

I bought my PS1 in 1996, was already modchipped and got a bunch of bootleg games, as I said, it was actually impossible to find original PS1 games here (Argentina) until the 2000s. It was all bootlegs.
Pretty sure it was similar in the rest of latin america.
>>
>>4058974
I'm talking about America here dumbass. We didn't get chinkshit in bulk. Not 3rd world shitholes.
>>
>>4058978

My post wasn't talking about Murrica, so I don't know why you quoted it.

I don't see a quote, kiddo. Seems you're autistic and assume I was talking to you and not the OP. Special snowflake.
>>
>>4059760
I'm talking about the part when you saw a floppy copier and replied to posts about that spouting off about CDs.
Understand how you could get confused though, since you're arguing with everyone in this thread because they're all wrong and you're right.
Have a happy summer kiddo.
>>
>>4060090
You tried, summer. You tried.
>>
>>4055343
I grew up with an N64 and I'm starting to grow fond of the PS1 and it's aesthetics. I wish piracy was as simple as buying an everdrive or something like that, but I'll take a mod chip and burned CDs anyhow.
>>
Everyone here had a playstation
I think I was one of the few guys on the school with a n64
And this was true for the next generations, even the xbox was more popular than the game cube
>>
>>4059398
yup the site is now japanese
>>
>>4058751
>then didn't have CD burners
You didn't burn the games yourself. You went to Chinatown to buy bootlegs.
>had a sawed off shotgun next to his bed
>was totally into Area 51 and government cover up conspiracies
Nice.
>>
>>4058992
If you reply to a post, the assumption is that you've read it. In >>4058958 you replied to >>4056224, >>4055914, and >>4058792 all of whom explicitly mentioned they were not talking about the US.
>>
>>4058751
Having proper internet or a cd burner was irrelevant. You had bootleg traders from whom you could buy burned games for 1/10th the price.

You only needed 1 guy who had the proper hardware setup and the willingness to burn games.
>>
>>4062550
So you're saying Europe is 3rd world? Because I'm fine with that. I just want to make sure that's what you're saying.
>>
>>4062605
>So you're saying Europe is 3rd world?
Of course I am, bud.
>>
>>4062605
No, anon is saying nothing of the sort.

3rd world implies unchecked poverty, a corrupt government and no universal healthcare. Oh, and widespread circulation of illegal firearms.
>>
>>4062607
Maybe you have a point then. In 1st world countries like America we don't have freely sold bootlegs in stores.
>>
>>4062605
Where did you get that? Are you not reading posts again?
>>
>>4062607
>>4062616
>>4062632
Stop replying to him you fuckers.
>>
>>4062632
>>4062635
The post you linked kid >>4058792
>>
>>4056028
Yep. Most of the time I copied games owned by friends or rentals from video stores.

But I did download a few bin/cue files from a Xoom webpage back then. Tens of 3.5mb files over a 56k dialup connection...
