My biggest pet peeve about old video games is flashing, seizure-inducing screens. I'm glad this became less conmon with time. No, I don't have actual vision-related health issues, but they make me uncomfortable and strain my eyes.

What are the worst examples you can think of? My pick is arcade version of Salamander, one of the levels has an enemy that causes crazy flashing and takes me out of a fun game.

every time you open or close the menu in FF1
it's not that bad, but you go into the menu so damn much it all adds up

Transformations in WBIII. Even worse by the end of the game when you need to cycle through your forms in change rooms
>>
Thanks OP I just had a seizure
>>
I recall Pulseman gets pretty stupid in the later levels.
>>
Say what you will about changing the past, I'm glad Nintendo removes seizure effects from Virtual Console releases. It's nice to be able to play these games without getting headaches.

The white flashes on some Super Mario RPG attacks (like Bowser's spiked chain timmed attack). I closed my eyes everytime I used it even as a kid.

also spell casting. Makes playing the game a sad thing

These always caused my TV to fuck up for a second

Robotron 2084 might bother some people.

Beating the mid bosses in Mario 3 and subsequently picking up the question mark ball

Heard you only get seizures from the flashing if you are of low intelligence.

They're fine. You need to get your eyes checked.

Didn't they introduce rules regarding it in anime after the Pokémon incident? Maybe it spread to video games too.

I know Nintendo modified the Pokemon R/B/Y 3DS eShop releases and gutted most of the flashing from attacks. The NES Classic also has automatic anti-seizure technology that blurs flashing as seen in OP's image.

Why the animators thought that effect was a good idea in the first place is baffling. It's eye-searing to watch even without epilepsy.
