It's my favorite as well; tons of personality and not that challenging.

The charm system is a cute way of portraying the "curse" aspect of the storyline, but granted: it's a bit frustrating at first until you stock enough charm stones

I wish I could beat Monster Land, it kicks my ass. RPG elements with a timer was a terrible idea.

its basically a charisma system the more charm you have or the higher the rating the lower the prices at merchants.

Charm gems increas the charm stat. Different equipment has different base charm stats. If your stat is low then you can't buy upgrades in stores and you will just see a question mark instead of the item.

I liked Wonder Boy in Monster World but my file but I never completed it. A little slow paced for all the backtracking I had to do I think.

Play Wonder Boy in Monster Land for the Master System, then Wonder Boy in Dragon's Trap for the Master System. After that, play the remaining two games in the series, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV (which has a fan translation), both are on the Genesis.

It is Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap, they didn't touch the gameplay, only had some button for using items.
I think they really catch the atmosphere, if you liked the original and want to do it again you won't be disappointed.
They also add few dungeons but I didn't find them yet,

Anyway my favorite is the Dragon's Trap, but I really had a good time with Monster World IV when I bought it on my PS3, I can totally see Shantae's inspiraition

It's the purest remake of a game you can get. The physics and gameplay are completely untouched, to the point where they let you switch between new and old graphics on the fly and your passwords will work on both the remake and the original Master System version.

The new music and animations are great, but if you're a purist or just interested in the game and don't care about the facelift the game has been given you can just emulate the original, and the only difference is a couple of extra bonus areas and the ability to save.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land for the Arcade, hands down. Maybe its just because I was more of an arcade person than console person, IDK. it had a huge following in my local arcades, to the point that, even though they were all Japanese bootlegs and nobody knew a word of Japanese, people figured out the symbols for the pyramid bar/sphinx mini quest.
