ITT: RPGs exclusive to the N64
Bonus points for anything worthwhile
I'm not sure if its just novelty but N64 RPGs interest the hell out of me. They feel like some weird middle step between SNES and PSX RPGs.

This one's fucking crazy, its a turn based RPG where you can target each specific body part in one on one fights.
>>
probably the best RPG on the system, 100% essential if you like tactical RPGs

it's fucking bad, but its that comfy kind of fucking bad. Very easy to riff on but you won't miss a thing if you skip it.
>>
Robopon 64 and Paper Mario are both pretty good.

Harvest Moon 64 and Wonder Project J2 also have some rpg elements.

I'd love to get my hands on Ogre Battle 64 but it's hella expensive.
Recently I imported Super Robot Wars 64 and been enjoying it, it was the only 5th gen SRW game that I didn't play before.

Custom Robo and its' sequel are both fucking great. Japan got all the dank robot RPGs for 64.

I loved this game when I was a kid but I never beat it. I think I only ever got to the part where you switch protagonists. Anyone know if it emulates well?
>>
>>4045409
>Anyone know if it emulates well?
Take a wild guess
>>
>>4045410
It's fine. The new Glide plugin fixes most stuff. Just don't boost resolution or anything like that.
>>
>>4045379
>RPGs exclusive to the N64

You mean all 10 of them?
>>
>>4045409
>you switch protagonists
That's just the beginning of the game

This kind of post could never be absent on a N64 RPG thread, heh.

The opening village area is burned into my fucking cranium. I agree, even as a kid I could tell it wasn't an amazing game (or good even) but I still rented it every so often and because of that it's comfy

Well, this sure was a short thread

>>
>>4045525
Thank you.
>>
>>4045382
Anyone else thought this was some sort of MGS spinoff when they saw the boxart?
>>
>>4045525
>Nushi Tsuri 64 (Japan Only)

I didn't ask for this feel. Knowing that there are like a dozen retro Nushi Tsuri games that will never be translated is pure suffering.

I played the one DS LotRK that got a translation and they've turned it into moe anime garbage. Sad.
>>
>>4045545
It very probably began as that, but it strikes me more as a ripoff, even if it's made by Konami themselves.
>>
>>4045549
Are the GBC games any good? I can never get in the mood to try them.
>>
>>4045554
I think it's more like this generic action style was about all anybody could muster up at the time, because they were all too busy jerking off about how great polygons were.
>>
>>4045525
definitely not better rpg library than saturn
>>
>>4045557
Yeah, I love both the GB and GBC game. It's a shame the others aren't translated.

Just warning you they're very slow paced and simplistic games. I'd even say that without nostalgia goggles they'd be pretty boring.

If you want to enjoy the atmosphere of being a small Japanese boy in a rural seaside town in the 1970s who runs around fishing, picking flowers, and punching bears to death, it can't be beat.
>>
>>4045573
>If you want to enjoy the atmosphere of being a small Japanese boy in a rural seaside town in the 1970s
Well I didn't before you mentioned it, but now...
>>
>>4045571
I'll give you that. Saturn has a small collection of really solid exclusive RPGs.
>>
>>4045549
It's only suffering if you let that stop you.
>>
>>4045637
Until I run out of games to play in English or translated doujins, I'm not motivated to learn moonrunes.
>>
>>4045659
Then why are you suffering?
>>
>>4045667
I wasn't that poster. But I don't like knowing there are things I want I can't have. You know, like every human.
>>
>>4045549
There's a PS2 one apparently. No idea if its any good but might be worth checking out.
>>
>>4045571
Not better than the Genesis, either.
>>
>>4045731
if you know moon runes it is
>>
>>4045731
Incorrect.
>>
>>4045731
i could agree with that. genesis definitely has more rpgs that stand out, but both rpg libraries are kinda mediocre
>>
>>4045731
if you include sega cd, most definitely

Here's the thing, back in the day, some magazines hyped it as "N64's response to MGS", probably because it's from Konami.
The reality is that it's nothing like MGS, it doesn't have stealth, and the camera isn't semi-top down.
Hybrid Heaven has third-person shooting and platforming elements, but the real core of the game is the battle system, in which the game is unique.

However, here's an interesting bit of data, some of the staff that worked on Hybrid Heaven did work on Metal Gear 1 and 2 for MSX, and Snatcher.

Flying Dragon's SD mode has very fun RPG mechanics.
Definitely one of the most underrated N64 titles.
>>
>>4045545
It was suppose to have stealth. They had old screen shots of the character hiding in giant cement cylinders to hide from enemies. When you think of it that way now you can under stand why you have neutral start to fights, advantages, and disadvantages. Think of almost every fight in the game, you usually start neutral unless you are trying to run away from the enemy then you might get caught in a disadvantage. The stealth mechanics were obviously suppose to make use of surprising the enemy to gain an advantage with a full power bar at the start of battle. Then you look at most of the rooms and it is the enemies run straight towards you.

Would have been interesting to see Hybrid Heaven fully realized.

this game was so ahead of its time. It's like the elder's scroll oblivion of the n64.
>>
>>4045525

I wish someone could translate some of these games to english. I know custom robo and wonder project j2 have been translated already and shiren 2 is very playable even in japanese. I'd like to see robopon 64 and custom robo v2 translated as well.

Are you looking for a repro cartridge or just the rom?

you can find the cartridge at etsy.com if you want.
>>
>>4048776
>>4048865
It's not translated yet.
>>
>>4045382
This is a good one. Very interesting gameplay. Currently playing through it, about half way through.
>>
>>4049778

It is 100% english. Go look it up.
>>
>>4049974
I see. It's done, but the translator is giving 6 months timed exclusivity to repro makers.

Why do people overcharge for reproduction carts? I have seen nice looking ones in the 20 dollar price range

Pretty much everyone who makes them in the west is retarded. The Chinese are the only ones who know the score.
>>
>>4046208
holy fuck stop posting this game on every unrelated thread you find

god damn
>>
>>4045387
LOL. I actually enjoyed this game, even if it wasn't the best. While it's not better than a typical RPG, I respect what it was trying to do a lot more.

A fully realized Quest 64 would've been the best RPG of that generation.
>>
>>4050825
he just wants someone to ask what it is so he can write a paragraphs about shining force 3
>>
>>4045382
This is a really unique game. I just started and I'm loving it. Although the shooting is mediocre, the battle system is amazing, like an expanded and less automated version of the Gokuden games.
I'll rip this for some game. Actually, it's exactly the battle system I was searching for.
>>
>>4052563
Yeah it isn't strong everywhere, but in general it is fairly strong with all of the aspects of the game coming together. Running and platforming with battling enemies to shooting guys. Honestly I thought RPG's were going to go that way back then, more to do in the game rather than walking around and getting into battles.
>>
>>4045382

Hybrid Heaven is seriously underappreciated. It technically pushed the N64 to the limits (proper cutscenes!) and plays like a streamlined Vagrant Story. The plot also does a good job of keeping things interesting, each act builds upon the next well. Unfortunately has some of the worst platforming on the N64, and a lot of backtracking through empty environments.
>>
>>4045379
This was one of the very first western RPGs with a world full of NOTHING. Truly ahead of its time.
>>
>>4052813
Ultima 2 had worlds full of nothing, as did Ultima 6.
>>
>>4052813
western RPGs have always been pretty fucking empty
