Couple things
1 IT'S NOT RETRO
2 Original devs abandoned the project and there are a few bugs left to squish
3 Amateur game designers are more interested in making Mario World romhacks, building levels for Mario Maker or coding their own engines

They play it off as an actual invasion, though. Toads are running around and fearing for their lives and you can actually play as Toadstool. This is ages before 3D World.

I hate how there are multiple characters but most of the engine features don't work with none of them besides mario or luigi. For instance as link/toad/peach you can't slide down slopes, fly, climb up vines or ladders, swim, hold keys or shells, yadda yadda it's a broken mess.

Peach and Toad can hold shells and swim. It is only Links gameplay that lacks those features but he more than makes up for it by having a unique style. I only wish all characters could use Yoshi.

I remember when this just came out and people were declaring the DEATH of 2D Super Mario games. Lulz. Also the devs from this went on to create Terraria.

Yeah but most levels are made with Mario gameplay in mind. For instance as Toad when you collect a feather you get a double jump instead of flight.
