when you can stack rooms in the engine
this usually separates true FPS games from "doom" clones, as doom has world definied on a 2d plane with varying height and ceiling with the exception of portal fuckery like duke nukem 3d

And Quake. Either one would be good enough to derive that they aren't really clones of Doom anymore. Though a few games before it also did quite a bit. Surprised Duke didn't have that effect.

The engine didn't actually support looking up and down, it used a trick which involved shearing.

Technically there was no up and down, just 2D line definitions and in the case of build engine, stackable sectors.
