Frankly it is about the overall points accumulated, however rank 1 has 300k+ points, I barely broke 100k. Site does give me a new zeal to try games I haven't heard of or played before. The whole concept even if not cheevo related is called a Skinner Box. However it is far better alternative than blowing your cash at a Casino and winding up broke.

I can't even get Retroarch to work for 1 hour without crashing.

It's not a skinner box, skinner boxes are based on random rewards with minimal effort. Game achievements aren't random; you either have the skill or you don't. And since you're calling it a skinner box, I'm guessing that means you don't.

I mostly play hacks that fix localizations and bugs, so this gimmick doesn't work for me in majority of cases.

Someone stole all my playstation trophies and tagged the inside of my miiverse with pictures of frogs.

I dislike the idea of achievements, because the fun of a video game should be the experience itself, not just ticking off a checklist. Call me old-fashioned, but this is /vr/ after all. Also, Jen is a nice name. Is it short for Jennifer?

No shit dude. Achievement whores have the least fun with games. Sure, if you really like a game go for it. I did it with Mega Man 9, I did it with Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition, but mostly its a waste of time. I just loved those games. You will never get anywhere close to all achievements so if you do do Retroachievements, take it slow and do what you like a lot as an excuse or something to play it again.

As for progression based achievements, you guys do know that it's what devs use to track what content players complete in their games, right? For example, they can see what percentage of players complete the game, vs. players that only got through the second chapter. They can also see what percentage of players bothered with the side content vs. what percentage plowed through the main game and that's it. This lets them decide what types of features to add to games they make later on down the line.

All that having been said, I think some achievements are fun. I enjoyed the ones in Mega Man 9 and 10, especially because I wouldn't have bothered replaying those games so much without the cheevos and I really enjoyed doing them.

At the end of the day, this isn't really hurting anyone, though, so I don't think there's much of a reason to get so mad over it.

Yes everyone knows that, there are achivements for turning the console on, pressing start at the title screen and going into multiplayer modes exclusively for data mining and market research. Majority of games aren't even started let alone beaten.

While I love to collect arbitrary challenge trophies once I can't get one even without trying my hardest it drains the fun which only results in losing interest in more trophies.

So mainly fuck any asshole programmer that puts ridiculous challeneges to get a trophy, if I'm done with the game I'm done and that's it.
Probably will use the site again if I manage to remember a bunch of games to beat again, not very likely tho.

Yeah this is the crux of it: It's something like level design. For achievements to be good (and they certainly can be), there needs to be a good designer creating them. And you're generally not going to get that with a non-professional system like this.

Unlike most here, I actually tried this feature out whenever it came out and it just didn't work in 90% of the games I tried. Either achievements wouldn't pop when they should or I got many achievements when I first booted the game. I also had to use specific cores, some of which were shit. Both of these instances make the entire system worthless, coupled with the fact you could easily spam rewind/save states to get them all (in the 10% of games that worked).
