I was doing some reading on TCRF and noticed that this game is widely considered to be "unfinished" - which actually improves the quality of this game in my mind because I just thought it was one of Square's shitty prototype games

Anyway ITT games widely considered to be unfinished
>>
vanilla Mortal Kombat 3
>>
>>4021556
It's a shit game. I mean, there's worse games, but it's bad.
>>
It's a strange game. I found a copy for $10 thank god some resellers want $70 what the fuck. I really wish I could sit down and play it 100%

The music is fantastic and to me the art style is the best I've seen. Give it some time and I think it could gain a cult following

>>
You could fuck me sideways if Tomba 2 isn't unfinished because that game is butt ugly
>>
>>4021640
The art was all over the place with the 2D sprites and badly done 3D environments for battles along with great background to explore but you have to fumble around seeing what you can interact with. Though that is a problem with a ton of games that use pre-rendered backgrounds.

With that said I think it is one of the best JRPG's from that generation, unfinished or not. Though where do you draw the line when something is or isn't finished? Wasn't there a place in Final Fantasy VII in which they were going to use so you can revive Aeris? What about Sonic 2 with Hidden Palace and all of the music that just got dumped onto the half assed two player mode?
>>
>>4021556
The main thing I hated about it is how they made mazes with recycled background renders. I kept getting lost and pissed off.
>>
>>4021615
Your taste is shit then.
>>
>>4021668
You're absolutely right, but somehow it all looks like gold to me. I started with emelia line, very strange to start an rpg off with a girl going to visit her bf or whatever after a fight and then ending up in jail cause hes dead (from what I can remember) really different, which is great.
>>
>>4021696
Don't make me body slam you
>>
Super Tokusatsu Taisen 2001.
They have a lot of underlying systems (item making, base capturing) that the game forgets about 20 stages in.
>>
>>4021668
>Wasn't there a place in Final Fantasy VII in which they were going to use so you can revive Aeris?
No there wasn't, that was purely fan conjecture.
>>
>>4021712
I'm 140 lb and 5'11" can you even lift me?
>>
IIRC Secret of Mana is also largely unfinished, that's why the later part of the game seems like such a cluster fuck. Still an awesome game though.
>>
>>4021615
It is a shit game and I hate it. I don't like being babied and having my hand held but holy shit

>get the ISO
>play as Red because Alkaiser is cool
>Wander around casino
>finally find big bad sassy boy
>go to ship
>wander around with no goal
>get my ass beat when I give up and use a guide for hints
>fuck this - dropped

>>4021640
You're not wrong, I still think about the village theme and the backgrounds sometimes, but $70 is a fucking disgrace

>>4021668
>one of the best JRPGs from that generation
Square alone produced so many stellar JRPGs in that generation that even if we're just talking about Square, it's an incredibly weak title in comparison. Even considering other devs, Star Ocean 2 is a total fucking drag to get going with the actual story but it at least gives you direction and options

>at what point is something unfinished
A valid question. Despite not being /vr/ - MGSV is finished because it has an ending and isn't broken in any way - but the cut content shows. That being said, just because you run out of time to add something you really wanted doesn't make a game "unfinished." That's kind of a loaded term and I acknowledge that, but SaGa Frontier to me felt too detached from itself to make an impact on me, if that makes sense

>>4021676
I remember that too - but to be fair it feels like Star Ocean 2 and a bunch of games do the very same thing so I can't really shit on SaGa Frontier for that
>>
Xenogears is an obvious one.
>>
>>4021790
Outside of the first three games on the Gameboy and SaGa Frontier 2 the series doesn't hold your hand with progression. It is a very common thing with a player feeling lost and actually needing to explore the world and talk to NPC's to find their own direction. Some people like it, like me, others like you not so much. That is just mentioning progressing the game and not growth mechanics or other underlying mechanics which makes the game great as well.
>>
>>4021937
Y'know - I'll concede and admit I have no idea how the battle system works save for the fact that if my main dude dies, I'm done - which I can't complain about because I like Persona 3/4/5 but that's neither here nor there - I don't know shit about the magic system
>>
>>4021973
You only get a game over if your MC is LP killed, not if he goes down. That's actually hard to do if you're paying attention.
>>
>>4021989
I can see how it can happen to a new player. Might not know you could revive a guy with a healing spell and just has the character knocked out so the enemies do instant life point damage.

This.

>Terrible scenario with arcs that have no real relevance to the plot

>Draw system is largely underdeveloped, has poor synergy with the game world

>Setting is underdeveloped and meaningless
>>
>>4022308
There is a crapton of setting info...hidden, buried and kept out of the way of the romance gobblety-gook and memory loss the 'real' plot focused on. There's info about where the world's monsters come from, setting stuff about some of the races and all the countries' sordid pasts.

You're right: hardly any of that shit matters and alot isn't given any relevance but FFVIII's problem isn't underdeveloped, it's under-implemented as far as the setting is concerned. They went out of their way to put all this stuff out of the way, mostly/likely because they wanted to focus the story on the only character development present: that of an emo git who just switches gears and a stupid spoiled princess who doesn't understand how real life works before she's victimized by all that witch bullshit.

Of all the scenarios where you got stuck it's Red's? With a guide, too. You should be ashamed anon.
>>
>>4022392
Considering he finds the easiest SaGa game too tough even with a guide, he could just be retarded.
>>
>>4021818
A friend of mine told me disk 1 and 2 were unfinished, before I started playing Xenogears. But he emphasized 2 was really something. I just thought disk 2 would have a lot less maps or something. Nothing prepared me for the massive disappointment I felt when I started disk 2. It picked up more to the end but most of it is still a huge cancer. The two dungeons felt like ways to make irrelevant party members slightly more relevant, and add a purpose to the existence of a shitty joke character thst just hung around with the team to be used as a plot device later. In fact, xenogears would be vastly improved if chuchu and hammer were removed. Completely useless characters. And I'd be able to take the crucifiction scene a little bit more seriously.
>>
>>4021556
I finished this as the robot and had a good time. Wasn't super long, and the combat system was interesting once you got it down.

I think some of the other routes are really fucking confusing on what to do or where to go though.
>>
>>4021790
I just hate Lute's quest. Shit was WAYYY too short.
