I just got a Nintendo 64 from eBay, it arrived in perfect condition and the seller claims it's fully working but I can't seem to get any picture or sound from my TV.

I've got a Samsung 40" smart 3D tv (model UE40H6200AK) so I'm thinking maybe it's a bit too modern for a console like the N64.

The thing is, I can play my PS2 slim on it no problem through the red/yellow/white ports, and I had my Sega Saturn working fine just the other day.

I couldn't figure out how to make it work using the RF cable either. Am I doing something obviously wrong here? I don't have another TV to test it with so I might end up sending it back to the guy on eBay.

Ask in the repair thread.
>>
Go to goodwill and buy a crt.
>>
>>4008114
Stop trying to be a hipster and just give up and move on.

>>4008121
>get a shitty CRT
>forcing the random CRT meme on a hipster
>>
>>4008114
Ps2 is a different resolution.

Do you have a game in the N64 and a jumper or ram expansion?
>>
>>4008123
>CRT meme

While there are other types of SD screens, CRTs are the most optimal for retro systems.
>>
>>4008123
Not a hipster.

Had one when I was kid, dad sold it and bought us a PS2 instead. I recently got the itch for Pokémon Stadium and I like playing on original hardware.

>>4008126
I've got Pokemon stadium in the console right now. If it makes any difference I'm in the UK and using a PAL system.

>>4008129
Unfortunately I don't have the space for a CRT in my current setup.
>>
>>4008114
The no sound is a giveaway to me that its not working at all. Video modes on tv can differ. I'd look for the TV source settings menu and look for anything that could help. Then I'd look for a real CRT. You should be able to get sound out of it at the very least. Plug it into a boom box or something. No sound = not working, and I'd just get my money back and move on.
>>
>>4008135
I'd take the jumper out and put it back in. A lot of the times they just need to be reseated .

I know PALshit has some odd Nintendo cables. Could be for a different Nintendo console?
>>
>>4008139
I've tried the RF cable and the AV lead from my gamecube. Re-inserting the jumper didn't fix it either.

I'm going to take it to my grandparents house tomorrow to see if their mid 2000's portable TV works with it.
>>
congrats on the new paperweight, op.
>>
>>4008179
I've been on the wrong end of eBay's ridiculous return policies enough times to know how easy it is to get my money back.
>>
>>4008129
random goodwill CRT =! good CRT
>>
>>4008139
>PALshit
it's NTSC region ignorance and not PALs fault, I sometimes think they jealously fucked PAL regions on purpose
>>
>>4008114

Put an expansion pack in it. I'm not fucking you around.
>>
>>4008203
I don't have one yet. All I've got is the console, leads, controller and games.

How would that help though?
>>
>>4008114
you know you have to use channel 3 or 4, right?
>>
>>4008121

While you're at it pick up a retard and give him a good home too
>>
>>4008114
MATE! youre trying to connect composite connection on a component line.

It doesnt work that way.

your tv should have a connnector somewhere which only has 3 plugs in a line yellow white and red
>>
OP, does the console power on? also do you really not have any friends who own TVs? it's simple analog video, there shouldn't be a single TV that doesn't support it. The only thing I can maybe think of is perhaps your TV is PAL and the console is NTSC, but I'm sure you would have noticed something like that.

>>4008552
Some TVs use the same plug for one of the components and composite video. if that's how he connects his PS2, it should work.

>>4008114
OP do you have a VCR? if so, connect your N64 to it's coax in port and run an a/v cable from the VCR's output ports into the ports you normally use for your ps2 slim.
>>
>>4008552
Samsung uses the green component for yellow when doing composite.
>>
Your cartridge/system connectors are dirty. If the game doesn't boot, you won't get a picture. At most you will see a slight flicker, but on lcds you might not even see it.

Clean your pins with rubbing alcohol+q-tip and insert the cartridge a few times into the connector in and out as well. Make sure everything is dry before powering on.
>>
>>4008576
>The only thing I can maybe think of is perhaps your TV is PAL and the console is NTSC
That wouldn't stop him from getting an image on the TV, as PAL and NTSC are standards for colour encoding.
>>
>>4009019
>rubbing alcohol
No, you want 90% isopropryl alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is a pain to use because of the high amount of water in it.
>>
>>4009027

Isopropryl alcohol is rubbing alcohol, it just depends if it is 70% or 90% or anything in between. Electrical contact cleaner would be way better, Deoxit if you take apart the game as Deoxit leaves a sticky residue that I recommend cleaning up with isopropyl rubbing alcohol afterwards.

T. someone who has easily cleaned 400 carts including MVS.
>>
>>4009038
I wouldn't be rubbing 90%+ iso alcohol on your skin. Don't call it rubbing alcohol or you're spreading a misnomer.
>>

>>4009040
>>
>>4009063
Not necessary. 70% works just as well on skin and does not dry your skin as badly. What kind of third world country uses 91% for anything but cleaning electrical contacts?
>>
>>4009063
That stuff would be next to useless medically. What a scam.
>>
>>4009079
>>4009083
The back label on that bottle will almost certainly tell you to dilute it.
>>
>>4009095
Then my point stands. Don't use 90%+ iso alcohol as rubbing alcohol.
>>
>>4009083
>Higher concentration of the active ingredient somehow makes a remedy less effective.
Are you a homoeopathist or some shit?
>>
>>4009102
You need water in it so you can kill bacteria, dumbfuck. Don't talk about shit you don't understand.
>>
>>4009104
I'm sure 9% vs 30% wouldn't significantly lower efficacy in dilating the membrane pores you contrary mook.
>>
>>4009114
I'm sure you have no idea what you're talking about, as evidenced by your post.

>>4009095

Sorry for the lack of clarity in the photo, but you'll find that the directions do not indicate dilution as being necessary. Why anyone would purchase 91% rubbing alcohol and then dilute it when 70% is readily available is beyond me.

>>4009101

>Labeled as rubbing alcohol
>"Don't use it as rubbing alcohol"
>>
>>4009132
It won't be very effective as rubbing alcohol. Looks like you're in America, so that explains why this is allowed to happen.
>>
I'm really starting to regret dumping my CRT but it was 2010 and I was so ready for HD.

Trying everything again today.

Gamecube AV lead through scart socket = no picture/sound
Gamecube AV lead directly through colour ports = no picture/sound
N64 RF lead directly into antenna port = no picture/sound, nothing detected when auto-tuning.

>>4008838
I haven't owned a VCR in over 10 years.
>>
>>4009137

We've strayed from the original point of contention, and it doesn't matter whether it's medically effective or not, in this case. The issue was whether or not rubbing alcohol and 90%+ isopropyl are the same, and they are. No misnomer, only a difference in concentration.
>>
Sounds like the N64 is fucked if you can't even get anything through RF.

Claim a refund.
>>
>>4009160
No, it is a misnomer, because it isn't effective or advisable to rub it on your skin.
>>
>>4008114
Get an RGB scart lead from Retro gaming cables
>>
>>4009197
N64 doesn't support RGB outside of a select number of French consoles.

I'm at my grandparents house now. I've set up the N64 with their shitty old 15" TV.
It can't be that old because it has a HDMI port, but I figure I've got a better chance with it compared to my Samsung.

This is starting to annoy me now.

>>4009168
How do you set up the console through RF? Auto tuning doesn't seem to do shit.
>>
>>4009221
Stop using the SCART port.
>>
>>4009221
I think your console is actually fucked then. Either that or the AV cable.
>>
>>4009226
The colour ports aren't working either.

>>4009227
I know the AV cable works because I use it with my GameCube.

How can it be fucked? It's pointless selling a fucked console on eBay without mentioning the fact that it's broken because it's so easy to get your money back. It was very well packed, it came with the original box and polystyrene tray.

I wrote a message to the seller.

When I try to send it this pops up. Looks like I'm going to have to open a return case.
>>
Wait what, am I still in /vr/?
Do you mind to tell me people here don't have canisters of 96% isopropyl alcohol and a few cans of R-11 contact cleaner??

I though /vr/ was supposed to be a retro gaming community and not a bunch of sissies.
>>
>>4009221
flip the input - output switch
>>
>>4009404
Tried it, nothing changes.
>>
>>4009346
R-11 is a waste of money.
>>

Let's get all the stupid questions out of the way.

The power light comes on and such, right?
It's not missing it's ram, is it? Open the little port top center of the console and make sure there's a black or red thing in there.
The contacts on the cart and in the console aren't dirty, are they?
You've tried more than one game inside of the thing? Not just one game during all of these tests?

OP here.

Thanks for all the suggestions in the thread.
It seems like the best one was "get a CRT".
I now have a massive 28" Sony 'Wega', and it didn't cost me a thing except fuel and the strength of a thousand men to carry the thing to my car.
Still can't get it to work with the RF cable but the AV lead from my gamecube does the job.
I'd love to get it working with my Samsung tv but I can accept that it's too new to accept an N64, it's just a shame since my Sega Saturn works perfectly with it.

I'm very happy!

The TV is a short term solution though, I can't keep it on my desk forever.

Are there any good slim/light TV's or monitors I can buy for my N64? Preferably something over 20" with built in speakers?
>>
>>4010382
Bang&Olufsen MX4000
>>
>>4010538
That looks great, I'll be on the look out for one of those. Thanks anon!
>>
>>4008114
Blow gently in the cartridge then put it in the system and try it.
>>
>>4008189
trinitrons are common at thrift stores and sell for like ten dollars. as long as it's not a no name brand, any consumer crt with s video input is preferable to an led television.
>>
delete system64
>>
>>4011232
>trinitrons are common at thrift stores
not really, 90% of the CRTs are shit without trinitron tubes

>any consumer crt with s video input is preferable to an led television.
depends on the use case
also: flatscreen =! led television
>>
>>4008114
Is the booster or expansion pack in the unit?
Are you sure it is not just problems with the AV cables?
Have you tried cleaning the damn thing?
Have you tried cleaning the games?
Did you try wigling the cables and shit and holding the console in the air?
>>
>>4011564
Check my photos anon.

It was the TV's I was using. I got a CRT from Gumtree (Britbong Craigslist) and now it's working fine with the AV lead from my gamecube. It was never an issue with the console or any of its ports.
>>
>>4008195
>think they jealously fucked PAL regions on purpose

You can thank this attitude from both Sega and Nintendo as to why PlayStation steamrolled everyone on their first try. The PAL regeion is Sony country
