I'd assume it's because they were released at the start of the 2000s and because they're so close to their previous games (Gold/Silver & Baldur's Gate 1) which are retro.

Because Baldur's Gate 1 was released in 98 and Pokemon Crystal was on GBC, a /vr/ retro console.

Definite bends in rules but BG2 is still an Infinity Engine game. Same goes for Deus Ex as an Unreal game and Diablo 2 as a sequel to a /vr/ game. But technically the argument can probably be used for Call of Duty games since they use a heavily modified Quake 3 engine.

Pokemon Crystal was launched on the GBC which is considered retro. Baldur's Gate II is a little more iffy but with computer games, there's usually a little bit of leeway as long as they're very early 2000 titles. You see a lot of threads for Deus Ex, Diablo II, Icewind Dale, Thief II, which're all right on that line. But this exception exists largely only for PC games and generally isn't abused. While you might see a Neverwinter Nights (2002) thread, you're not likely to see an Oblivion (2006) thread. In general, use your best judgment. If it's right on or just a little past the 1999 cutoff, you'll probably be fine.
