Yes, DOSbox.

DOSbox is still the best way to play SW. It plays great, too. Just set up bMouse if needed.
Get the GOG version.

Ah, Blood and Shadow Warrior both turn 20 this year. 2 masterpieces both reaching 2 decades old. What a great year 97 was. I've seen some people diss on SW, but I could honestly go on for hours about how well it succeeds, and I honestly wouldn't hesitate as naming it as possibly the greatest classic FPS of all. I'm making something SW related at the moment.

97 was a great year for shooters with Dark Forces 2, Quake 2, SW, Hexen 2, and Blood. Fallout, FF7, and UO also came out that year.

What are your favourite levels? Mine are Master Leap's Temple, Bath House, Floating Fortress.

The game is all about fast reactions. You can die quickly, but you can kill quickly as well. Of course, if you try to play it like Doom and stick to shotgun/uzi it's not going to work.

The plane level has awful gameplay I'll give you that. The level itself is technically impressive, but gameplay is all about enemies with explosive weapons with huge radius in tight environments where you can't see shit...

Fun fact: the plane level, which is in Wanton Destruction, so not made by 3DRealms, was part of what got the mapper hired by 3DRealms to work on Duke Nukem Forever.

I couldn't fuckin believe what they made the BUILD engine do in this game. It blew my fuckin' mind SO HARD when it came out, as somebody already familiar with the engine from making Duke maps.

SW has a FUCKTON of awesome effects, most of which are used only once in the entire game.
IIRC i even stumbled on an effect that wasn't even used in the entire game.

Plus, you have a lot of freedom in how to use and combine those effects.

The downside is that, the more freedom you have, the harder it is to get into. Part of why SW has so few usermaps.

But I can tell you, the possibilities of SW mapping have never even been SCRATCHED and probably never will.

I made this map not long ago if you're interested. works in any version of the game, but in DOSbox the main outdoor area can drop framerate, though I still recommend playing in DOSbox.

Can we talk about the weapons in this game? I really like them, expect for the shurikens and sticky bombs, which I find to be the least useful. Also there's also the caltrops and flash grenade, which are laughably useless. Lastly I feel that the railgun, and possibly the grenade launcher and ripper heart should have an alt-fire. I had the idea that the sticky bombs could've been used as an alt for the G-launcher. How would you fix or change the selection?

just wanted to say that I played your map (last time you posted it) and it was pretty great. I'm not a huge SW fan compared to Blood and Douk but it was a cool map, nice health/enemy balance, not too hard not too easy.

I find that if you play the game on the hardest difficulty, and do a katana start, all weapons and even items are useful. Flash grenades do work on enemies and make them not shoot you, though caltrops don't do much dmg they can help in tight corridors.

Thanks! I had lot's of fun making the map but it was also a pain in the ass to build. At first I wanted to make a map that felt more "pro", like that could be from the original game, and in the end I got carried away by all the possibilities the game offers and it turned out much more "usermappy" than I hoped mostly due to the open layout and the different themes mixed up but I'm still satisifed the way it turned.
