Reading Cyan's dialogue from FF6 is absolutely painful if you know the first thing about early modern (not old or middle) English. "Thou" is a less respectful pronoun than "you". It's like tu/vous in French, du/Sie in German.

I've always wondered about that, since "ye" as in ye olde apparently is supposed to be pronounced just like "the" because whatever reasons, wouldn't "thou" and "you" have ye same pronunciation?

The "ye" thing is actually even more retarded than that. "Ye" is an improper transcription of [thorn] + [e]. Thorn is an obsolete Old and Middle English character that forms the diphthong [th].

So it's literally some fucking moron that mistranscribed "[thorn]e Olde Shoppe" as "Ye Olde Shoppe", even though that's completely wrong and it's just Middle English for "The Old Shop".
