Anyone else miss the use of "traditional" art to supplement ingame sprites or early 3D graphics? Character portraits, drawn cutscenes, box and manual art, etc.
Favourite art / artists?
The 90's were a perfect storm of 2D and 3D together, especially in the anime style. It was perfect.

I honestly can't tell who's supposed to be a man and who's supposed to be a woman in that pic

That's part of the fun.

Did you just assume their gender? Check your privilege.

Right? Games that stimulated your imagination by using multiple different art styles to create a whole world. In that sense they feel bigger than modern games that have one singular photoreal 3D style across the whole thing.
Masamune Shirow (Lords of Thunder)
Katsuya Terada (SFC Prince of Persia, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past guide)
Satoshi Urushihara (Langrisser)
Whoever made the monster and level design in ActRaiser and ActRaiser 2
Susumu Matsushita (Necky the Fox - Famitsu's mascot, Willy Wombat and some SFC games like Super Adventure Island I, II, Down the Earth and Elfaria)
Naoto Oshima and Yuji Uekawa (Sonic, Ristar)

Oh my god that Lords of Thunder art is beautiful.
On anther note, I've been seeing some indies do some "low poly" work for their games, which is awesome because I love Megaman Legend's style and think the world could use more of it... only they haven't been applying any textures to their models, so it's all looks like crap.
Jun Tsukasa (of Sengoku Blade fame) is criminally underrated.

Totally! I love seeing artwork in game and like to collect artbooks because I love concept sketches and ideas. I have almost a whole shelf of my art books section just for gaming and a bit of anime related stuff.
I'm not sure about the "miss" part though, since I still like that stuff.
