Do people who identify as retro japanese PC gamers (NEC PC, MSX, etc.) actually play and enjoy the games they talk about, or are they only interested in them for their artstyle?
>>
Most people here don't play the games they collect. They're just collecting for the sake of collecting in an attempt to fill the void of their empty souls.
>>
>>3976645
Pretty sure most people here actually play the games, mate. Not sure what you're on about.
>>
>>3976703
It's pretty well known fact that collectors don't like games.
>>
>>3976703
He's right desu senpai. I own three full european collections and am working on adding all the jap\us releases as well

If we don't count solitaire at work I haven't played a video game in almost 20 years

Here's the thing, 90% of Japanese PC games are horrid Eroge VNs with horrible clichéd writing.
>>
>>3976703
I honestly have my doubts that the people who think Zelda games are unbeatable without a FAQ would put up with a choppy 30 year old PC game long enough to say they actually played it.
>>
Sure. Even learned Japanese to properly do it.

I feel like that's a weird false dichotomy. The art is part of the game, and it contributes to my enjoyment of the games when I play them.
>>
>>3976703
Hoarders don't usually play their games. Hoarding and gaming are totally different hobbies.
>>3976754
What game is this? That art is terrific.

>>3976645

Most people here aren't collectors, the popularity of flashcards and emulators here is a clear testament to that. The type you're describing is more popular on Youtube or Neogaf, 'collecting' threads always get shat on immediately.
>>
>>3976642
I like to play them and like the artstyle, aswell as the music.
>>

>do people who millennial buzz words actually shitpost anime shit or are they only interested in shitposting anime shit millennial buzz words?
I play old jap PC games because I like them. Things like the Towns and X68K had nothing you could compare them to at the time. Other things had games that you wouldn't see on another platform for years. Of course you didn't see any of this for decades because underage and youtube. But thanks for the angsty underage anime shitpost. We totally don't have enough of them.
>>
>>3976903
Is it fun or just pretty? Is there an english patch?
>>
I love the old japanese PCs games.
From MSX to the NEC PC98, i've played lots and lots of those so called "anime games".
While it's true that some of the visual novels are filled with cliches and eroge content, most of them are still worth reading/playing.
Also, dont forget the RPGs; you'll literally swarm in spectacular RPGs when it comes to retro japanese computers, and some of them were way ahead their time.
>>
>>3977079
sadly most of them will never be playable in english, so most of us cant enjoy them
>>
>>3977079
If you're not into VNs or RPGs there is zero reason to get into Japanese computers.

Well, it depends; RPGs dont usually require an huge knowledge of the Japanese language: playing a few Dragon Quest games in Japanese will give you a general idea of the vocabulary used in those kind of games and help you get into the mindset; you'll probably be able to figure out what to do and what's going on, even without understanding the story.
VNs on the other hand are usually more complex; but if you're interested, there's a website with a bunch of translated and adapted VNs from the PC98 era: http://tss.asenheim.org/
It's good.

>>3977132
Not really, there are a lot puzzle games, strategy games and shoot em ups too; those are usually hard as hell though

It's a pretty bog-standard first person dungeon crawler. Fun enough if you like those sorts of games but it doesn't really do anything astounding with the genre. I highly doubt there's a translation.
>>
>>3977157
Why play PC shmups with choppy scrolling when you can easily emulate Arcade games?
>>
>>3977186
Because you can play both of them.
>>
>>3977130
Most is probably true. I'm one of a few people that have started working on them though. It'll be slow going, but more games will get done over time. I know of about 12+ PC-98 games that have varying amounts of work done on them, translation-wise. I'm working on a couple of games currently my own self, with more that I've looked into. Just give it time or learn Japanese. Really the only two options there.
>>
>>3976642
>MSX

I thought people only collected Konami, Compile and Falcom games on this thing

Either that, or some Metal Gear fanboy owns a couple boxed copies and ignores the rest of the library, kinda like Castlevania fanboys and the Turbografx/PC Engine

Listen to yourself.

i try to play through them to appreciate the art, but i don't typically beat them. sucks that saturn emulation is pretty garbage, and most nec system games don't have translations

Point in case, if the game was truly good it would eventually get a home console release with all pornography removed.
>>
>>3978057
Like, isn't it embarrassing how the majority of these games take place in highschool but you've probably been done with your studies since a decade?
>>
>>3978059
I don't like it when they change it so the characters don't have sex at all; it changes their relationships.
That was what was great about most Saturn ports--they tone down the illustrations a little but still kept most of the sex.

Revival Xanadu hooked me into the world of retro-jap gaming, and it's awesome. There are so many games with excellent concepts which needed a bit of polish, refinement, but were forgotten.

Speaking of PC-98 games, Rusty just got a translation. Decent Castlevania clone.

>>3978171
The DOS version has an English release, at least.
>>
>>3976645
That's not true. Most people only play their childhood games. They don't like to venture into the unknown.
>>
>>3978171
This. The gameplay is clunky but it has a certain charm that makes me want to play the entire thing with the expansions and stuff.
>>
>>3978052
But apparently, some of us are homos.
>>
>>3978131
That's pretty cool. I wonder if they're going to do the DOS version.

Apparently not: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=24093.msg335395#msg335395

Well, shit. That's too bad.
>>
>>3979440
Isn't the PC98 version for DOS?
>>
>>3980302
Yeah, but there's a version for MS-DOS, too. I already use DOSBox, and have never messed around with the PC98. I was hoping to play the version I already have in English.
>>
>>3980392
What other DOS would you use on PC98?
>>
>>3976715
If what you are saying is actually true I want you to read this and take it seriously: you are stupid.

I mean that sincerely, not as meme insult on 4chan. Man to man. You're an idiot. Find something else to spend your money on.

>physical strength: 3
He can't even lift his own dick!
>>
>>3980408
I don't know. NEC DOS?
My point is, Rusty was also released for IBM PC. I'm a little disappointed that it isn't going to get a translation patch as that is the version I already play.
>>
>>3980545
So in your opinion the modders should take double the effort just because you don't want to adjust to another platform?
>>
>>3980612
No, fuckhead. Stop trying to put words in my mouth. I'm grateful that someone bothered to translate the game at all. There's a lot of awesome stuff I would never have gotten to play if it weren't for the fan-translation scene.
>>
>>3976716
>90% of Japanese PC games are horrid Eroge VNs with horrible clichéd writing.
I actually find those early games's writing more fascinating now that I'm older.

I guess it's probably because there's this sort of rawness of a handful of amateurs in their basement attempting the horrible cliche writing, as opposed to huge budget production filled with supposed professionals that still churn out the same quality of work

There's a decent amount of them and they are as enjoyable as any other old PC game.

The only factor that leads to most people never finishing them is the language barrier.
A good instance is the first Mechwarrior for Sharp X68000. An all around upgrade over the MSDOS version with better graphics, MUCH better pixel art, actual music and better sounds.
If you find anyone talking about old Mechwarrior, they'll just point you to the shitty MSDOS original because in the end, that one is in English and this one is not.
>>
>>3981609
Shit I didn't even know there was an x68k port.
>>
>>3980868
I feel the same way.
