The OST and some imagination helps the game feel more horrifying. I reflect and some characters seem silly to be scared at, such as the Hell Knight and the Butcher.

Going by our rules here, that's not true though. It was released in 2000, but our rules don't go by game release dates, they go by hardware.

And because it's possible to run Diablo 2 on hardware from 1999 it makes it retro according to this boards rules.

It's the same as why Pier Solar or Cave Story Genesis are okay for discussion here. It doesn't matter when a game was made. All that matters is what hardware it runs on.

Also, start low and gradually increase.

3ptopaz helm, wealth and mf amulets rings is roughly 300% if they're perfect, if they're not, maybe 200%. You can start with 100%, find some items like shako, make rhyme, etc, and build up to 300-500 which is optimal for fast farming-survival.

That's how I usually do it, and it pays off soon enough. I've got my gear after 200 Pit/CS/Baal runs that's around 20 hours of farming.

I've scrapped around 180% mf, if I swap other items for more mf, I get one shotted just by teleporting around. My runs consist of countess, pit, andy, meph, and I haven't gotten jack shit in 3 days.

I can't imagine how I'm gonna gear up once the ladder resets. Will be 10 times harder. At least I was lucky to get early mage fists before clearing nightmare this time.

That isn't the issue. Once you wipe out the bosses, they don't respawn. You would want to restart the server several times a day. I refuse to do that manually. Had that option worked, I could kill the server and restart as a service. I'm on call so I have time to dick around with it unfortunately.

Its way easier at the start of a season. Basically at the start of the season I make a meteorb sorc and farm like crazy. I'm not going to say you'll definitely get things of value, but there's a lot that is pretty high value then. Even outside of that, there's always people looking for good dueling gear. Check out what sort of level brackets are popular and keep an eye out for anything at the end of that bracket with good stats for dueling.

I switched to hardcore exclusively like 8-10 years ago. It's not even for status, it really does change the way you play the game, approach every situation, and creates a lot of drama. Everytime a tp goes up is like a rag tag team trying to defuse a bomb. Everytime someone hits the PK switch, the entire game scrambles like a bunch of ants. The best thing is bad players and good players all die at some point. Doesn't matter if you think you have the entire game at the back of your head and you have played since 2000. The grim reaper is always lurking in your shadows waiting to fuck you in the ass raw. While you are racing up the ladder during a reset, it is actually intriguing to keep track of familiar names and slowly discover some of them turn grey on the rankings. And when you do die, it invokes the biggest amount of butthurt, again doesn't matter if you are a veteran. A very simple new game plus switch turns the game upside down and causes a spectrum of emotions, this game is truly GOAT. You have to try it, but only during ladder resets. In fact coming back to give it another shot promising yourself to not die is the main reason why you should crawl back to this game every 6 months. Once you go hardcore, you can't go back to regular because the original game is just facerolling everything because all you do is grind and get too powerful too quickly. Hardcore makes it about survival where you pay attention to every aspect of the game again.

The warrior becomes fucking hard lategame when you have a dozen paladins slamming onto you, and mages need to swap to the shield and teleport in a regular basis. It's not what I'd advise to a new player.
Remember that in this game, when you are hit you are reset to the center of the hex you were standing at. Getting stunlocked is a constant danger for the warrior.

There is a lot more to gearing and playing a Rogue than a Sorcerer, and the class is very versatile. Have you never encountered 400% ToHit/unhittable melee rogues? The choice between whether you emphasize +life (and thus Healing) or +mana (and thus +Mana Shield) also has some playstyle connotations. Fire Wall affects enemy AI even if they're Fire immune; it and Stone Curse are useful for making bottlenecks .Rogue has decent casting speed so they can afford to use heavy utility in their style of conducting combat, or even go poor man's mage for whatever reason.

Sorcerer is a game of mana management early on and then you just fly around, Fireballing and Chain Lightning everything in your path and spamming Teleport. There is not much finesse, but the all-immune Hell enemies are either Teleported past or tediously worked on with a Golem/Stone Curse. Never have I felt the need, as a Sorc, to leave some barrels un-popped to form a better blockade or chokepoint; the mobility and AoE just make those cool tactical choices completely unnecessary.

Warrior is my favourite class, but mostly because of the challenge. They don't need "specialized" gear, just to use a shield (2h warrior is a challenge of its own) and learn proper footwork and even spell management. You need to pass an AC and resist threshold to have a chance in hell, but Warrior is always perfectly playable.

necromancer fucking sucks until you get Blood Ritual, and still isn't very good until you have Corpse Explosion and at least 8 skeletons. even then, champion and boss packs can still tear apart an entire skeleton army effortlessly, especially if it's something like a knight boss pack.

barb is overpowered from the start of the game, and by the looks of it, remains overpowered forever. the only things that are really annoying for a barb are mage and succubi boss packs, and that's just because they constantly run away.

How so?
The unique items are mostly the same. Rares and Sets are just ported in from D2. All the new quests are just reintroduced from the D1 alpha and beta. The new classes are either ported in from Hellfire (in the case of the Assassin and Barbarian) or D2 (in the case of the Necromancer). All the new spells are either from Hellfire or D2.

There really isn't that much actually "new" stuff. It's just high-res D1 with a few extra features added in from Hellfire and D2.

What I like about Median XL is the insane variety of viable builds. In vanillia D2 there's only so much you can do to a character to make it work past Normal difficulty, and half of the spells simply suck. In Median all the skills have some utility at the cost of characters losing their identity. I mean stuff like summoner barbarian or builds that only use skills received from items are perfectly normal in Median.

Back then I could choose between D2 and Nox. I chose Nox. I didn't play D2 until 2009 or so. I don't regret anything and would do it again.

There aren't that many mods out there. Belzebub restores some of the cut content and brings some quality of life features, but has the unfortunate side effect of making it more in line with Diablo 2.

I like Diablo 1 because every magic item you find is useful and you don't have to grind to win. You wade through a whole bunch of trash in Belzebub and there are a lot of times that your numbers just aren't big enough so you have to go back and redo a bunch of floors.

I would recommend Belzebub, but only after you've completed Diablo 1 Vanilla. It's not even that long of a game, maybe 6 hours assuming it takes you 20 minutes to clear a floor.

Having done full playthroughs of normal difficulty on two separate characters now, by far I can say that my biggest complaint is the absolute brick wall you hit when you get to dlvl 16. Both of my characters were ~clvl 26 when they got there, and had basically no problems clearing the prior 15 dlvls or any of the side areas. Then dlvl 16 whips and rapes and beats you raw with Blood Knight boss packs, Possessed Death Knight packs, Possessed Soul Burner packs, Advocate boss packs, Fanatic and Berserker Azure drake packs, Doomsayers, and all other manner of horrible overpowered bullshit that you can't fight in any reasonable capacity unless you back out and go grind the cathedral levels on Hell difficulty for gear and enough exp to reach clvl 32.

Drognan in Act 2 Normal sells the best socketables in the game for spellcasters, with great scepters and staves to make runewords in, gamblers can often give you higher-tier weapons and armor before anyone else (I always check Elzix obsessively for better armor, he once gave me a rare Plate Mail with decent mods when I was simply expecting, well, any trash Plate Mail), Anya in Act 5 is a good source of boots and claws and overall gambling can get you very good results.

I didn't think it was very good.
The Sierra-original enemies had terrible animation that looked almost nothing like that of the base Diablo enemies.
The Hive levels seemed like something that was just thrown in for no real reason.
All the Fire/Lightning immune enemies in the Crypts to make pure Magic viable was a good idea, but it ignored the real problem, which was that there just aren't any good pure Magic spells in the spellbook.
Monk is a fundamentally dysfunctional class that takes away most of the fun of Diablo gameplay (finding new magic items), because almost all of the item types in the game are non-viable for Monks.
The new quests didn't really fit the theme very well.
Oils screwed with weapon balance too much, in my opinion, and the Runes weren't very useful.
Apocalypse should not have been made into a book spell.
Na-Krul was a patently unsatisfying boss fight.

Why hasn't D2 been ever topped as hack'n'slash?

Every game that tried to be its "killer" did not understand why it is so great and did a lot of shit wrong.

Revenant - great combat system (actually best in all games of the type), but the game was kicked out with only 1/4 of intended content.

Nox - linear, most RPG elements got cut out before release.

Sacred - exponential scaling, too much numbers that do not matter, very little incremental gain from stats, most skills suck.

Dungeon Siege - even more linear than NOX, combat gets boring very fast.

Titan Quest - linear, most skills suck, boring combat

etc.

If there exists a hack'n'slash that at least tries to come close to Diablo 2's variety and complexity, I've never heard of it.

Torchlight 1 and 2 aren't bad mechanicswise but both are kinda bland visually, especially 2. I simply gave up on Tochlight's second? act (The desert) because it felt like there were no fucks given about making the visuals rich.
Oh and every fucking boss from Torchlight 2 seems to be a summoner. Fuck summoner bosses.
