Are there any legit cyberpunk JRPGs? Are there any old cyberpunk RPGs at all?
Cyberpunk was mainly a western genre during the 20th century. There are sci-fi RPGs e.g. Phantasy Star but they don't really qualify as cyberpunk. You can play the Shadowrun RPGs on Genesis and SNES if you want but I think they were mostly Western designed.

Oh yeah I forgot about that recently getting translated. I even played it and it really is pretty cyberpunk.
I think FF7 is as close as you get, OP.
Some of the Megami Tensei games is all I can come up with, then there's Snatcher but it's not rpg.
>>3954867
Cyberpunk was a pretty big think in anime, manga, and some novels during the 80s and 90s

When you come to Los Angeles you can suck my cock.
>>3954858
Isn't Shin Megami Tensei cyberpunk? Or no?
>>3954875
Good thing I make it a point to avoid California like the plague.
>>3954881
Soul Hackers is.
The original Megami Tensei was about students summoning demons through computers, so it has some cyber in it since the origin, but Soul Hackers goes full cyberpunk.
>>3954873
Yeah, I should have said "in video games". In that media, "fantasy" was still exotic to them in the 80s.
There is "Snatcher" which is made by Kojima and is cyberpunk themed. But definitely isn't a "JRPG". People refer to it as an "adventure game", but honestly it is more of a visual novel than anything.
>>3954872
Literally the only cyberpunk element it has is a single mega corp. There's no hacking, artificial intelligence, cybernetic implants, etc.
>>3954858
>>3954974
Those were already mentioned, and they aren't Japanese. Did you even read the thread before downloading that image?

Cyber Doll
>>3954971
>a single mega corp
And it's really more of a government entity than a corporation. It's literally a redress of the Empires from past FF games.
>>3954985
Are there any Saturn emulators that don't aren't tedious to get to work?
>>3954985
Came here to post this. Cyber Doll is great.
>>3955023
How did you play that bitch?

>Anything that can be done to a rat can be done to a human being. And we can do most anything to rats. This is a hard thing to think about, but it's the truth. It won't go away because we cover our eyes. THAT is cyberpunk.
>-Bruce Sterling
FF7 isn't cyberpunk, but besides the single mega corp it also has some transhumanist and quote related themes. I wonder if Akira was a visual & thematic influence on the FF7 team.

On a Saturn. Learn Japanese.
>>3955005
Mednafen. Get a front-end like Mednaffe and you can be up and running in 5 minutes.
>>3954872
FF7 has like... zero cyberpunk in it apart from Barrett's arm gun.
>>3955086
And that shit was more diesel punk
>>3954975
>Are there any old cyberpunk RPGs at all?
JRPGs do take precedent, but that second question would include other RPGs as well.
>>3954898
There hardly was any video gaming before the 80s, and fantasy was as common as dirt in Western games.
>>3955152
Fantasy was common as dirt in western video games before the 80s too but we're talking about JRPGs. They discovered Ultima and Wizardry in the early-mid 80s and have been rehashing them for 30 years
>>3954867
why do you exist . kill yourself already
>>3955374
>and have been rehashing them for 30 years
To be fair to them, the West has been rehashing Might & Magic IV (or maybe Daggerfall) for 20.
Maybe metal max returns? It's the closest i can think to the spirit of CP(tm)
>>3954873
>>3954971
SD Snatcher, man.
It's a proper JRPG for the MSX. It's available in english, too.
I remember one on the SFC with yakuza and mechs.

>>3954858

Now that I think about it, some guy was working on the Japan-only Sega CD version of the game years ago.
Any word on that?
>>3954867

Illusion City
>>3961782
It didn't go anywhere
>>3954858
Just making a quick list of possible candidates:
Lagrange Point
Illusion City
Solid Runner
Megami Tensei/SMT
SMT Soul Hackers
SaGa Frontier if you can deal with a really bizarre setting
The first Front Mission if you really wanna stretch the definition
La Wares
>>3955695
Metal Max is more desert punk/postapocalyptic than cyberpunk.
