Hey /vr/. I was super bored yesterday and hungry. I decided to go into a goodwill and found these. Wtf , i said to myself and obviously found bought them. They both work and even have the battery lids.
>>
And?
>>
I found two Lynx 2s like that for $5 each at the same Ohio Thrift before I went to the state fair a few years ago. It was nice to put one back in the complete packaging I'd been holding onto for the last 20 years after a so-called friend stole the console in high school.
>>
>>3954049
Pretty good find OP. I found a Game Gear for $9 at Goodwill not too long ago, but it only came with Sonic 2 and it needs its caps replaced.
>>
>>3954059
Are you going to replace the caps?

You get a big mac after?

jealous, anon. that's a hell of a find. My best goodwill find recently (I work next to a goodwill) was a loose Wii for $8. Had Super Mario 64 pre-installed and $10 in Wii points left on the system too, so I hacked it and swapped it out with my other thrift store Wii which was in worse shape.

Op here, yeah goodwills are really stupid. And their exchange policy sucks ass. It uswd to be that you can get ur money back . but now is even exchange on electronics and clothes only. Oh well all good things come to an end. Like true retro game hunting, it has become an obscurity. I remember going into thrift store and passing on games like goldwn eye ocarina of time and final fantasy 7 to name a few. Just because they were overly abundant. Found this years ago for 5 bucks at a yardsale.
>>
>>3954109
Yeah, that's how it goes. I go every single day on my lunch break just in case I find something good, but it's become slim pickings. I used to find much better stuff as you were saying; and yeah their return policy is trash.
>>
>>3954109

It's time to move on to PC, PS2, and Xbox games.

I don't get why you're excited about the Lynx.

Nice GG find, though.
>>
>>3954229

May the Dark Lord bless you and save your tender meaty soul lastly for his hellfire brisket.
>>
>>3954263
The Lynx is superior to the GG in every single way. GG doesn't have Chip's Challenge or S.T.U.N. Runner.
>>
>>3954263
The Lynx is much rarer than the Game Gear. I have 3 Game Gears and have started passing them over until I find a blue or red one. I've only ever encountered those 2 cheap Lynx in the wild. The games are really cheap, too. Kind of like NGPC

More comfortable, ambidextrous (which is totally awesome), great sound and graphics, etc. Also it's an Atari which ups the cool factor.
>>
>>3954309

It's not *really* Atari though is it? Epyx got two Amiga devs to develop it. In fact RJ Mical told me himself that it was a great device until "the wrong people got hold of it".

Fuck Atari.

Well above all else, Game Gear has very Sega feeling games on it while Lynx has very Atari feeling games so ultimately most of it is subjective but the Lynx is noticeably newer hardware with a better screen and battery life and I'll go as far as to say it objectively feels a little better in your hand. If you prefer arcade style games Lynx wins easily.

I am even more jealous. At my Goodwill this is all they ever have. Yes, it is so valuable in my area, that it is behind glass. There's never any finds here.
>>
>>3954789
It was sold and marketed by Atari, so yeah it's an Atari. Everyone knows it started as the Epyx Handy, but I would have liked to see Epyx send it to market themselves, it would have failed even more miserably. You tight with RJ Mical? The Lynx is a great device with a great library; it never stood a fucking chance against the Game Boy, and I don't think there's some alternate reality where it did better if not for Atari. If anything the Atari name allowed it to be as successful as it was.
>>
>>3954149
PS2 is already getting pricy man. I bought two copies of Drakengard two years ago for $6 each and the price flew up when the new Nier came out. At least all the SMT games are super cheap. Can still be bought brand new for like $15 on amazon.
>>
>>3955812
Of course subjectivity is real. Some people prefer certain genres over others. The Game Gear has better representation of more genres and so it's quite reasonable that many people would prefer it over the Lynx despite the Lynx having superior hardware. This entire board is about subjectivity, really. Modern games are objectively superior by any measurable metric.
>>
>>3955910
Yeah, most of the Goodwills and second hand stores in my area (NoVA/DC metro area) suck ass. It's kind of sad just how bad retro is here.

>>
>>3958468
Thrift shopping in Columbus is pretty good there are three different thrift chains besides Goodwill: Ohio Thrift, Village Discount and Volunteers of America. The Salvation Army stores are drying up but there's one huge one that will probably never close because it's attached to some training facility (and next to a halfway house one of my exes was at for a while). There are SO many that if you take all day you'll definitely find something good although you'll easily burn up $30 in gas. I'd recommend doing it on a Friday and while you're at it check all the auction cases at all the Goodwills then consider doing the live auction rotation on Saturday. A lot of people bitch about the auction cases but I think they're okay. If the one near me that I go to all the time had one it might annoy me because it defeats the "lucky find" but it also beats out overpriced items sitting in the showcases forever and most people just silently bid over the course of the week so if you go to the effort of hitting the live auctions it gives you an advantage and the stores are cool enough to do them at different times so you can go from one to the other.

I'm not here to be liked but people definitely appreciate me. Maybe mostly newfags who appreciate sick thrift shopping tips more than enough to tolerate my big fat mouth, I guess.

I mean your prejudice is self-evident. To you, my post went from being good info to a shitpost only when you saw the trip but whatever. I'm glad you're going to avoid my thrift circuits. You'd be thinking every obnoxious jackass you saw was me and it'd just burn your biscuit.

That's like saying Amigas sold after 1994 are Escom. I don't buy it. I do admit that Epyx were in the shit which is why Atari stepped in. I never said it would had been more successful did I? I just said you could barely call at Atari.

Found these a few months ago. Paid $4 for them. Both are still in the shrinkwrap. Curiously enough, one has a sticker placed over Bally Videocade, rebranding it as Astrocade Videocade (which is sort of redundant). The insert is also different, boasting a differently-colored screenshot of the game and a slightly larger font.

Anyone have info on these? I don't think either one is too rare (found them for $10 each on eBay). I'm more curious about the name change.

Unrelated, but the guy threw in some NYPD patches for free. Might sew one on one of my older worn out jackets.

Hey thanks. I try to be pretty aloof and everything but it's good to be appreciated. There's actually more haters than I expected or they're just surprisingly malignant. They seem to be mostly people stuck around the precipice of ignorance on the topic of /vr/ who want so badly to feel smart that they try to pedantically deconstruct any post I make e
specially when I generalize. Like how in this thread the entire attack is based on "subjectivity existing" and my crazy assumption that someone would know how to delete their post if they changed their mind about it.

Probably my main objective here on /vr/ is to help people getting into the hobby to have the most effective experience which nicely dovetails with the authentic 80s-90s experience.

Probably the same people who believe there's no such thing as subjectivity also believe there's no such thing as authenticity so it's no surprise they would come after me - and other "gramps" anons who've lived similar lives to mine and have similar perspectives. Their increasing accusations against those Anons as being me without the trip tells me my efforts are beginning to be effective at marginalizing the negative "/v/-like" anons.

Looks like the Goodwills in my area. There was one that had a tiny little Sony PVM and an honest to god Neo Geo MVS arcade machine with a bunch of games once, and of course I missed out on those.

I find cool stuff at Good Will and Savers once in a while but I feel like the ones in my area have largely dried up, and of course there's that one shitty goodwill that never has anything good. There's a new one opening up right near my house so maybe with some luck I'll actually find some good shit there when it's open. There just might be some more big box PC games hidden away in my town that someone doesn't care about or know the value of.
>>
I never find shit at Goodwill unfortunately. I get some good books, but that's about it, every electronic I see is some old gimmick that people bought for their kitchen to use one time.

Many, perhaps most Goodwills especially ones without auction cases ship all of their "computer" stuff off to Goodwill Computerworks stores, ShopGoodwill auction hubs or straight to Dell for recycling. It seems that there is some kind of big deal these days about the possibility of selling a hard drive that has someone's personal data on it like the reseller can be liable even if they have no knowledge of it. I've never actually heard of a real case of this and the idea of it alone kind of pisses me off since it absolves people of personal accountability for disposing of their own data. Software companies can mine the shit out of it with one click of an EULA but used hardware resellers can't get a binding legal waiver? Seems ridiculous but it leads to a lot of weird stuff like my favorite chain of "cash advance" pawn shops having tons of computers in the back unsellable because they're waiting on someone to "reformat" them which to them means reinstalling from their recovery partitions. It annoys me because I see PCs on their inventory app that aren't actually sellable but the flip side is that they often have "as-is make an offer" PCs that only need an OS installed because I guess they didn't have recoveries and just got reformatted. Meanwhile almost every single phone I've bought from them hasn't been (easily) factory restored and has pictures of ugly naked people on it.

At Goodwill it's much worse as I'll often see gaylords like pic related filling up with "computer" stuff waiting to be shipped off to fuck knows where - and when I buy computers from regional thrift stores I can pretty much read the former owners' emails and log into their facebook after five minutes of circumnavigating their windows passwords. Probably lucky for them they're never even slightly interesting.

My small town seems to have an overly active thrift store scene, they drove most of the old pawn shops out of business. Goodwill showed up for a few years, but they couldn't into competitive pricing and finally left. Retro gear is still pretty rare, but persistence is the word. I scored a pretty nice EGA monitor last week.
>>
>>3966391
Oh yeah, I have a huge victim complex. See how hard I cry? That's how you can tell you really hurt my feelings. I honestly have no idea what "reddit speak" is but I've been posting in this style on this board consistently since the beginning. If anything since tripping up I've been making a conscious effort to contribute even MORE on-topic content and to do more to foster the culture that was prevalent on this board when it was a better board.
