I pretty much did everything in the main quest without any difficulty. The side quests/heart containers might be a bit tougher, but everything else is pretty straightforward.

The only hard part about that game for me was discovering that the flute turns the (bird thing) in the village into an actual bird.

There's really nothing logical about that, in prior games it was a whirlwind that swept you off when you used the flute. I may have missed a comment one of the characters made, but I dont believe there was any indication that a bird was supposed to take you places.

Getting in the swamp took a little ingenuity, but it required the bird, after that I got the idea because of one of the places it goes.

Another thing I cant quite figure out is when the big bomb becomes available to blast the giant brick so you can get the silver arrows. Its before you storm gannon's tower but I dunno when.

The kid it belongs to tells you before he 'dies' to take it to his grandpa. The grandpa tells you to play it in front of the windmill.

As for your 'prior games' comment, only ONE game before LttP had the whirlwind you describe. AoL had completely different functions for the flute, so using that excuse(assuming you're not trolling) is flimsy shit.

As for the giant bomb, after you beat the Ice Palace I believe...if not, then the Misery Mire dungeon. Mind you, you have to BEAT just that dungeon...you do not have to beat any of the others beforehand(which makes going back with the Golden Sword true hilarity).
