Were Ys to be released earlier in the West, would it be as popular

No because it's not by Nintendo.
It got released for the SMS in 88 and various computers in 89.

Timing wasn't the problem, I think. They shouldn't have released it on the Master System and the TurboGrafx-CD. If they had released Ys 1 and 2 on the NES/SNES in the West, Ys would have been huge. Not Zelda huge, but huge nonetheless.

Nobody in the west really played RPGs until FF7. All the SNES RPG classics that we talk about now came out super late in its lifespan when everyone had moved onto 3D.
