2 was a real fantastic experience. I loved the people Ryo met, the story, everything.

Though maybe I might go with 1 as my favorite because it had that real mysterious atmoshphere.

In conclusion I love them both.

Do you think they'll ever put Sega Racers on PS4? Because I want to play as Ryo.

I also want Ryo as a playable character in Virtua Fighter.

I liked Shenmue 1 better but I appreciate that there was more of many things I enjoyed in 2. more to explore, more mini games, more combat scenarios, longer story.

I HATED the end of disc 3 and disc 4 for dreamcast. you can only save right before that long ass building you have to work your way up...then you get one save to do disc 4 with meeting shenhua all the way up to the end with no place to save. so the end of disc 3 is 2 hours. then one save and forced to play another 2+ hours.

Shenmue 1 had cooler characters. the beginning of the story was more impactful. seems like 1 had more meaningful content although it was less content overall.

also driving a forklift is WAY more entertaining then picking up crates although they both are boring fast.

overall I love both games. I still have my receipt for preordering the pal version of Shenmue 2 for dreamcast around 15 or so years ago from gamestop/funcoland.

I started to do a replay of Shenmue 1 & 2 lately since part 3 is finallya coming out. Played it in 2002-2003, so I forgot a lot of stuff. Think they aged very well, I still love the atmosphere and even the english translation, that is a bitt stiff and awkward feels right. Reminds me of Twin Peaks sometimes, don't know why though...

I stll replay part 1, but I have a wquestion about part 2: is there a major difference on XBOX version? I don't have it any more on my Dreamcast and the game is much cheaper on XBOX so I plan to buy that version. Can you recommend that? Or is Dreamcast version better in some ways?

Also: Shenmue 3 coming out really restored my faith in mankind. Thanks everyone for making it happen!

Shenmue 1. Shenmue 2 represents everything I dislike about a sequel: the "bigger, more, badder" approach that actually is anything but. There were so many corners cut but it's liked for having more combat sequences and bigger geographical coverage. They got rid of the entire phone calling aspect, there is no pet to raise, NPCs don't have their own lives, buildings are full of copy-and-paste empty rooms.

Naturally, I'm not all that excited on Shenmue 3, but I'm glad it at least happened for Yu Suzuki.

Oh fuck, that fight with the fat man + the QTEs at the end. I LITERALLY beat him over ten times but had to restart the fight due to fucking up the QTEs.

Both special games. Acquired tastes, maybe, but special nonetheless.

I'm actually pretty worried about Shenmue 3. I wish Somy has thrown their backing behind it, instead of just promoting the kickstarter.

Xbox is fine if you don't mind english dub and starting from zero. It add extras(like some comics), taking photos in-game even in cutscenes, filter effects and saving whenever you feel like. It brings recap of Shenmue 1 in another dvd.
The big problem is how you can't use the savefile of Shenmue1, so you will miss the progression of your movelist and you will be pretty weak with your moveset which will make the game hard early on and waste lots of time to take some weak mooks down.

Shenmue 1 feels comfy with that hometown atmosphere, more with the date settings from 86. Exploring your house and finding shit inside desks or paintings was pretty cool.
Shenmue 2 is more open and more exploring new places, and has much more battles which was good. Shame there was no way to train in parks like in Shenmue1
Characters? I like both games in that, but Shenmue 2 was way a lot more... and more "waifus". Both Guizhang and Ren were good partners
The only thing I didn't like was the last part in Shenmue 2. Shit is way too boring and you walk and do way too many qtes for like 2 hours. I mean the first time playing that it was fine, but replaying the game again and again and reaching that part is meh.
For what 2 was, ending the game after Lan Di in the helicopter was the perfect ending for Hong Kong part. Guilin should have been Shenmue 3

Yeah the mirrors are some ancient legend stuff that we still don't know what it truly is and Ryo's dreams about Shenhua are about destiny, but that ending of 2 was kinda out of nowhere, or rushed if you want that way.

you're walking around...buildings have cracks in the walls. rust on the gates. there might be some trash on the ground.vast majority of folks are dressed common as fuck but in a way that is detailed and hyper-realistic. what other game did this on this level???

I've lived in several suburbs of seoul, s. korea and other small cities there...and although it's not japan dobuita reminded so much of that time in my life.
