The term "casual" didn't exist back in /vr/ times, regarding to video games.
"Hardcore" was very scarcely used and wasn't a label for "gamers" (another word that was rarely used)

Artificial difficulty is an actual problem right now though (and has been for a very long time). Hitscan from across the map or 1HP player vs 4000HP mooks is not difficulty by any stretch of the imagination. If I can avoid all of an enemy's attacks, it doesn't matter if it takes one or one million hits, it becomes a grind.

I find the game fun enough to warrant a second playthrough. At that point you've mastered it. Maybe if you stopped complaining you'd find yourself enjoying it.
