Do you ever get overwhelmed by the amount of games you can play, to the point in which you feel like you aren't enjoying them properly?

Like, nowadays I feel like I play a lot of games just to get trough my backlog, rather than to actually enjoy them, I play games thinking only on finishing them, and a lot of the time not even bothering with any of the side stuff, because I have so many games that I've yet to touch (although most of them are digital, so I'm not hoarding any valuable carts), in contrast to when I was a kid, when I would get maybe 1 or 2 games every year and play them for hours on end, maybe not finishing them, but definitely getting as much juice out of them as possible, playing them to death.

And nowadays not really, like, I don't know, I haven't bothered to play a MOD or custom .wad for Doom in years, or a Half-Life single player MOD, and I've never even bothered to find the secret levels in Quake, I just burned trough the games and didn't even looked back, just to check them out in my imaginary checklist of games.

Does this ever happen to you?

No.
>>
I don't worry much about finishing games and just play what I feel like at the time. Though lately it feels like I spend more time modifying and organizing my consoles than I do playing them.
>>
Jesus christ lose some weight dude, its unhealthy. You will never get a pussy in this state.

Oh ok then.
>>
I get that way too. I think you have to stop thinking of your backlog as a project.

Just focus on one game at a time and play until you feel done with it.

But I will become the most powerful wizard.

>>3897072
That's the kind of mentality that I've been trying to get into. I'm trying to think of my collection as a game store, rather than "my" collection, and trying to just go there, pick a game that sounds nice, and go hard on it.
Honestly most modern games are so uninteresting to me that i'm not even sure why I feel so pressured to clearing my backlog

>Do you ever get overwhelmed by the amount of games you can play, to the point in which you feel like you aren't enjoying them properly?

I can't say I've ever felt this way, even after discovering a platform I've never played before, and consequently amassing a large backlog as a result. I patiently play through one game before moving on to the next. A typical playthrough for me includes 100% completion, so I'll sometimes have to finish the same title twice - once to get an understanding of where missable content might be, and the second time to grab anything I missed during my first playthrough.

I don't have anything on my backlog at the moment. I mostly rotate through games with versus CPU modes, or strategy games that are played in campaigns. Sometimes I go back and do a challenge run of a previously completed game, like Zelda with limited heart containers or equipment.

I haven't gone full /vr/ yet. I still enjoy modern games. But they are brutal when you're worried about completing your backlog.

If you own games that you think are uninteresting then you should get rid of them. Less to think about.
>>
>>3897092
What do you do with "no end games"?

I have a lot of strategy games like Civilization, or sim games, that don't really have a "main mode" that you can get trough, so you play as much as you like.

Don't you consider MODs a big part of a game? I feel like I miss out by not playing MODs for games like the ones I mentioned on the OP.

>>3897101
Well, there are some modern games that still interested me I guess, mostly indie stuff tho.

I still haven't played The Witcher 3 because I haven't finish 2 (and because I don't have anywhere to play it), and if i'm trying to burn trough my backlog, playing something like that can be quite the challenge.

I gotta say, tho, that it is fantastic to get a game you enjoy enough to play for months nonstop.
>>

>What do you do with "no end games"?

If you're referring to arcade-style gameplay, I just go back and beat my previous high scores on occasion.

>strategy games

Almost all have campaign modes with an accompanying plot. I guess city-building games might be an exception. Again, I just play for high scores.

>Don't you consider MODs a big part of a game?

No. And I'm not sure why that was in all-caps. It's not an acronym.

I might play official mods / expansions on occasion, but only if I actually think they improve upon the game in some way. Expansion packs aren't necessarily intrinsically good. Some are downright unplayable.

This is the right kind of attitude to have. I often talk about separating the collecting hobby from the gaming hobby and this is one way to take that step. As you progress in this thought process it'll become easier for you to trade off or sell some games to buy other games - games you may have even already played through emulation. Your collection will become better - meaning that it will better represent your personal tastes and at the same time you will enjoy the gaming hobby more since you will learn what games you personally enjoy and be able to play them rather than feel compelled to plow through games you may have bought just because they were a good deal or you thought would play differently than they do

You need to get /fit/ and change your diet. This is the issue.
>>
>>3897123
I've just gotten used to writting "mods" like that, idk.

And well, that's sort of what I was trying to do before, but playing for high scores gets old fast for me, especially when there's nobody to compete with but yourself...

>>3897135
I've never been one to buy games for the sake of buying them to be honest, all the games I've bought are games that I tough sounded good or interesting at some point, but maybe the next day I wasn't feeling like playing something like that anymore, and I haven't gotten around to giving it a try or some other reason.
>>
It's more like at this point I've played so many games that within minutes of starting up a new game I can already tell that it's just a generic example of its genre and lose motivation to trudge through it.

Anon, more than 24 hours of porn is produced every day. That means that unless you watch multiple porn at the same time, you will never catch up to all the porn. There will always be porn rushing away from you that you will never have time to watch. A porn "observable universe", if you will.

The same applies to videogames, books, movies, television, comics, music, etc, etc, etc. They all succumb to the porn horizon.
>>
>>3897185
Is that a challenge?
>>
I find i just keep playing the same games over and over again, year after year. But i never ever grow bored of them.
The last 2 "new" games i played were mgsv and oddworld remake. both were shitty.
i've also tried out all the 2d classic zeldas this year, and really enjoyed them.

but other then that, its honestly just rct, cs1.6, resi1-3, and megaman1-6 stuck on repeat.
obviously i play more than this, but these games alone keep me occupied and never seem to grow tiresome. rct+resi in particular, i just dont get bored of them.
>>
>>3897050
Sometimes.
>>
>>3897206
I've heard a lot of people say this, and honestly I think i'm kind of the same, when I was a kid starting over something completely new was always exciting and an adventure, but nowadays I usually feel more comfortable playing something I've beaten before.

Many of the games i'm currently playing are re-runs of games I've beaten before.
Admittedly, tho, it's always a bit different, playing the game with a slightly different mindset, maybe you notice something new, or interpret some things differently.
>>
>>3897050
I am actually finding myself enjoying games more now that I've set the goal of trying to complete my backlog. Where as before I never enjoyed anything because I couldn't focus on a single game.
>>
>>3897303
That's why I started to get into the "I gotta burn trough my backlog" mentality, I started too many games and never finished them.

But now this way of doing things isn't cutting it for me anymore either, because I feel like i'm just focusing on finishing the game rather than enjoying them to their full potential. I guess there just isn't a perfect solution, if you play games thinking about how you play the game, rather than just focusing on doing it for enjoyment you'll be stuck in permanent hell.

>I feel like I play a lot of games just to get trough my backlog

Games are meant to be fun. Play whatever you want for as much or as little as you want. If you get joy from playing suggested games, or completing as many as possible gives you satisfaction, then by all means do it. But from what you say, you don't find that fun.

Leave the "doing a lot of stuff to get things done" mentality for shit that truly matters in your life, not for just playing videogames. That is, assuming you aren't a game developer and playing games is actually a way that you formulate and refine ideas for your own work.
>>
yes, yes it does.

the only luck ive had to enjoying them is grouping them into games i played as a kid and never beat and new 'found' games
>>
If it makes you feel any better you'll probably die before you can ever play every game you want to anyway, so that takes a lot of the pressure off.
>>
>>3897050
>Do you ever get the tism?
No.
>>
I feel the same way OP. Almost like a chore now.
>>
Depends on the games. Getting a little
non-retro because I've actually got some money and have being to trying to play new games instead of the same old ones for the 100th time, recently played Half Life 2 and episodes because I just never got around to it and while I was playing it I was sad and thinking about stuff. Meanwhile like 3 months ago I was playing Link Between Worlds and having a blast fully engaged. I've realised that if you're thinking like this when you play a game, then you're probably not enjoying it and should move onto a more entertaining one.

That said I'd spent like 60 bucks on the orange box so I was going to finish it and get my money's worth, but with retro games I can just download I'll try to remind myself of this.
>>
>>3898482
I forgot to add, with games are lucky enough to have began when they, or around when, they started to become a thing. It's probably that aspect that drives the idea we can play all of them. But don't really forget, there's probably going to be some really cool game that comes like a week after you die. You've never gonna be able to play everything. It's the cruel joke of life. Might as well play the ones you enjoy rather than force yourself to try them all.
