Is this thing even worth it?
Why is it such a shitty piece of hardware?
>>
>>3888163
If you wanna play the best version of Metroid, yeah.
>>
>>3888171
What about an everdrive cartridge version
>>
>>3888163

is not shitty, is just completely outdated, thats all.
>>
>>3888212
But don't the disks have horrible failure rates?
>>
>>3888205
You could, but you end up missing the extra sound channels. Plus the everdrive auto disk changing isn't completely reliable.
>>
this thing is only worth it with an FDSstick.
>>
>>3888223

well, thats the point. The Disk system was designed for poorfags who couldnt afford cartridges. I mean for the price of one cartridge game you could afford 3 FDS ones. Also, all the diskette units in the 80's were like that. But yeah, is true that this one in particular had a bigger failure rate than the others.
>>
Emulator kids will never know the feeling of relief that comes from insterting a disk, crossing your fingers as you listen to the reader head click and slide, hoping that you'll see the sweet release of the Nintendo copyright information and not BURR-BURR-BURR
>>
>>3888223
The disks themselves?
The drive is known for the original belts breaking, though once replaced with modern material you don't have to worry about that.
>>
the disk system is great if you feel like 8 bit games should have load times

I have three famicom disk systems and I love them. If you're a normie with no technical experience, then stay away - all three work fine, but each one also needed a hand getting fully functional again. It's my favorite NES expansion, hell, it's my favorite add-on console of all time. Plus, if you're not a technically illiterate shitposter, you can even rewrite the disks with any game of your choosing and, of course, repair disks that no longer work. Also a good 90% of the time, FDS failures after perished belts are replaced are due to the owner's incompetence - you're supposed to realign the spindle head too. Unless you're using the same system to also WRITE disks.
>>
>>3888163
I suggest playing the games through an FDSstick. This emulates the disk drive, but since the sound chip is in the RAM-adapter, everything works exactly as it should.
>>
>>3888573

I'm not quite technically illiterate but how go about this when FDS games aren't regular floppies?
>>
>>3888573
Can I get your thoughts on the twin?
>>
>>3889725
>I'm not quite technically illiterate but how go about this when FDS games aren't regular floppies?
They are, they're Mitsumi QuickDisks, and there are quite a few computers from that time that had drives for such disks.
>>
>>3888163
no it's shit!
get a famicom disk system ram adaptor
and a fdsstick
>>
>>3888163
Worth a few bucks to play quite a few good exclusives? Absolutely.

>>3888223
Not really and the disks aren't necessary with a drive emulator.

>>3889725
Similar to the way you go about rewriting computer games that aren't regular diskcards. lel. Use the correct drive and media.
>>
As a youngin, I remember kids at school mentioning it was possible to copy the games to floppy drives and play any game for free that way. I got massive middle school boners reading blurbs about it in EGM.

Who would guessed it was real? 25 years ago, there were several kids at my school that I would have legit killed to be able to have this technology.

Not ?I can play ps2, wii, and gc games in 4x with massive AA and its a solid :meh:

Sorry man, been up all night and made a few typos. Just trying to add to the converstation, no need to be a dick. (not the expected 4chan response, I know). Although, you have to be pretty fucking retarded if you're not aware of fucking line breaks between thoughts.

>>3892435
Oh, I know those were Famicom Disk drives, it just got me to thinking about how when I was a kid, I'd fantasize about putting SF2 of FF3 on a floppy after renting it and owning it. Out of curiousity, how did one acquire those back in the day? I assume it was like the game shops around here that use to sell modded OG Xboxes.
>>
>>3892605

Probably bait but the FDS wasn't released in America you mongoloid

I'll be finishing up my FDS writing quick start guide later today if you're interested
>>
>>3891854
>Mitsumi QuickDisks
This is not the most standard disk format though, like Sony's famous 3.5 format. I'm pretty sure all computers that used QuickDisks had custom versions of them.
>>
>>3892646
This is true; however to write famicom disks you use the disk drive itself
>>
>>3892609
I know it wasn't released here, dude. Jesus fucking Christ, when did I even imply that. I WAS IMPLICITLY SHARING A MEMORY OF HEARING ABOUT COPYING NES GAMES TO FLOPPY DISKS WHEN I WAS A KID AND WANTING TO DO THAT, THAT IS ALL. AT NO POINT DID I IMPLY THE OP'S PICTURE WAS CAPABLE OF THAT, FUCK. This is also why I asked where one would have acquired said hardware, and hypothesized it was probably like the game store near my apartment that used to mod the original 45 pound Xbox.

This is a stupid argument. Let's just talk about old games, god damn.

Using "Reddit" as an insult, on a board about retro video games no less, makes you seem incredibly insecure, by the way.
>>
>>3888223
No more so than any similar disk of its time

There's no "most standard" disk format because all of them are their own standards.
>I'm pretty sure all computers that used QuickDisks had custom versions of them.
They didn't, computer manufacturers didn't sell OEM QuickDisk floppies cause there were only 1 or 2 QD manufacturers (Hitachi maxwell being one of them, Mitsumi only focusing on the drives). Even nintendo supplied themselves from them, only repackaging them in slightly longer cases.
>>

>>3892605
There were a few ways to get a copier. Some shops had them but mail order was probably the most popular way.

>>

You could also just solder in a little resistor and problem solved. I know people that have even done it with hot glue
>>
>>3888573

now you are going to tell me that 90's LADA cars are good if you keep repairing them and cleaning them all months for the rest of your life.

Nah, fuck off, the FDS was ok for 80's standars, but something that fuck ups your games in 1-2 years is not worth.

>>
>>3893708
what does it matter? you can just overwrite them to the original again. In fact, one of the biggest problems with FDS games is that they're often written over with a different game thanks to the disk kiosks. This can restore them

Nintendo were the poorfags. At the time cartridge memory shot the fuck up in production price and there was a huge shortage, and at the time you could actually fit more on an FDS disk than you could in a cartridge. Consider this: SMB1 was considered by Miyamoto to be the peak of what the Famicom could do with a cartridge. Zelda, released right around the same time, considered to be what the FDS was capable of pinnacle wise.

Obviously in the next few years cartridge price came down considerably and they worked out battery storage so stuff like Zelda could be released stateside on carts, negating any need for the FDS. After 87 the FDS is regulated to shovelware by bad companies incapable of affording cartridge production.

Not to me it doesn't. Fuck reddit, even 4chan is better than reddit, at least 4chan doesn't take itself seriously. Reddit is a cancer and shame on you for referencing that site. Everything is manipulation and popularity contest from start to finish on reddit, then if a mod doesn't like your post he/she will come along and hide them from people behind your back - it shows up on your screen, but log out and noone can see it. Nice isn't it? It should be fucking criminal.

That's mainly reddit newfags who come in not knowing anything about this place, and trying too hard to fit in. See /v/, /pol/, /r9k/, /b/, etc.

So yes, the people who take themselves seriously are redditors who are also by extension ruining this site too

Yes, the Everdrive N8 famicom version cam emulate the FDS audio channels. But even playing that on a Famicom or in my case an AV Famicom the Everdrive still cant accurately emulate the audio channels. Example being Nazo no Murasame Jou
