So I've been playing a lot of the old XCOM recently, and beat UFO defense (or UFO enemy unknown, whatever), which I was pretty proud of. I heard there was an open XCOM thing for TFTD so I tried it out. Suffice to say, I got my ass handed to me. Any protips from experienced Commanders would be appreciated.

terror from the deep is a tough one. same tactics as UFO should apply until you meet lobstermen, which are almost immune to guns. use melee attacks on them. don't be too proud to retreat from battle. expect casualties. you'll probably still lose. great game.

I've beat both UFO and TFTD on ironman superhuman with OpenXCOM. TFTD is basically the same thing except harder. Melee attacks are not important, because the most important rule of XCOM is never attack an enemy that can see you. Master scout/sniper tactics, make full use of the motion scanner, and remember there's no such thing as too much explosives. And don't waste your time clearing cargo ships in TFTD, just land and take off again, they're a tedious deathtrap.
I can't play this because of the ship-missions, I'm not doing 2 hour bug-hunts in every room of a ship, god damn.

That's pretty much where I keep getting screwed. I get my hands on sonic pulsers as soon as possible, rush through gauss, try and get sonics. Should I branch off and prioritize vibro blades and thermic lances?
My tactics usually involve a lot of leap frogging, grenades and as little shooting as possible.
