It came out at a time when Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation were right around the corner. Sega of Japan didn't want it and didn't want to support it. Sega CD already had abysmal sales, and consumers weren't interested in another failed add on.

Didn't we just do thisthread? Anon reminded me about Kolibri and Tempo but those are the only two games you need it to play. The arcade and 32x versions of Virtua Racer are about the same so playing the 32x version on real hardware might be better than mame.

It should be pretty low on your list of consoles to get.

It added 16-bit color, so by that fact alone it was better than Sega CD. The After Burner and Space Harrier ports looked good.

According to Wikipedia, Sega sold 2.2 million units verses Sega Genesis / Megadrive 30 million. I'd say that qualifies as dismal.

Neptune was the name of this rumored super console. Had they added a way to increase color palette size on the SegaCD, I think it would have been much more successful and there would have been little need for 32x.

Not at all, I really enjoy mine. The Space Harrier port is fantastic, basically arcade perfect. Virtua Fighter kicks ass, and Virtua Racing is great too. Star Wars Arcade Game is great as well. If you can get one cheap, go for it, they're unique and fun.

It was better than the FX chip for sure.

Pitfall 32X is pretty cool, it has SNES graphics and the extra levels from the PC version.

Darxide is cool, you blast asteroids and collect astronauts following a radar and basically the game loops on forever.

The ports on it are generally really good versions and it has a small handful of good original titles. Definitely worth picking up cheap.

I don't like the Blackthorne port, they replaced beautiful pixel art with 3D CGI renders.

The wasted potential of this system used to always upset me. My bro got one on clearence and like 7 games for it after it was quietly discontinued for super cheap. He got an N64 right after and we never touched it again.

It's also ludicrously expensive. There was a guy in the UAE trying to sell his copy for £1,000,000, for years on end. It's definitely not worth that much (maybe £1000 at the end), but it's still pretty hilariously expensive. Can't deny that it's a really impressive looking title for the system though
