Good/decent top-down shooters? Don't know a thing about this genre beside Smash TV.

Assuming you're asking for overhead run n' guns (or even if you're not), play Shock Troopers. Seriously one of the best video games ever.

Try Elemental Master and the Japanese Undead Line for the Genesis.

Both really fun and underrated games.

Seconded.

Also, Total Carnage. It has the same left stick / d-pad to move, right stick / face buttons to shoot in the cardinal directions control scheme as smash tv
>>
>>3845681
The entire genre of Smash TV and Robotron style games is known as Twin Stick Shooters these days.

But if you want to broaden your definition, Iron Tank on the NES is a mediocre game which I found reasonably fun.

A great lesser-known twin stick shooting game is Bullet from Sega. Like Total Carnage, you move through scrolling stages rather than staying in an arena.
>>
Ikari Warriors is pretty good.
>>
>>3845681
Aside from the auto-includes in this list, there's also:
Granada(MD)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors(MD/SNES)
Tiger Heli(NES/Arcade)
Dragon Spirit(NES/Arcade)
Twin Cobra(MD/NES)
Xevious(NES/Arcade/not retro systems)
1942, 1943(NES/Arcade)
Galaga, Galaxians, Gyruss(NES, Arcade)
Ikari Warriors 1, 2, 3(NES, 1 only Arcade)
Legendary Wings(NES, Arcade)[this is MOSTLY top down shooting, but there are some side scrolling levels]
Battletech(MD)/Mechwarrior 3050(SNES)
MUSHA(MD)
Phelios(MD/Arcade)
Rambo 3(MD)[bonus stages are over the shoulder, but main game is top down shooting]

Have personally played all of the above, and considered each to be quite decent. If you get interested in more, I can expand to the ones that were decent to meh. Enjoy!

I've never played this but always wanted to, is it good?

Not bad at all, but pick your character and your partner carefully if you're starting out with it...most people pick the Scientist since he starts out with healing(either as main or partner).
>>
>>3845953

It's good, but you'll need to read the manual to understand how to level up your characters.

Thanks much guys, will definitely try these. Shock Trooper in particular looks tremendous.

Indeed although i prefer the saturn port as they added a footprint thing to the map so you know where you have been, a real ball ache on ps1 if you get lost in big stages..

Zombies ate my neighbors was amazing!

Great music, funny cliche jokes on horror, not super difficult but challenging enough to keep you playing, awesome weapons and great level design!!

It was very well made and co-op mode was also very fun!
>>

This game always felt unfinished and boring to me. I'm always surprised when I see it recommended.

A nice thing about it is that it's full of secrets and different pathways through the levels, and even different exits that start you in different parts of the next level. There were a few secrets I could never figure out even though I played through the game ten or more times.

I also recommend Syvalion.

And the Chaos Engine.

Shock Troopers on Neo Geo
Robotron
Chaos Engine

For some reason this made me think of that "Apocalypse starring Bruce Willis" game on ps1. I played a demo of it back in the day and it seemed alright, also a relatively more modern take on the smash tv style of gameplay.

Was it any good though?
>>
>>3851946

That game was fun, finished it many times.
>>
>>3851949
Nice. Guess I know what I'm gonna play this weekend then
>>
>>3848256
Mah excellent nigga.
>>
>>3845681
For space shooters, try Zanac, or GunNac if you want lower difficulty/more Japanese weirdness. Oh, and don't forget The Guardian Legend. That game is off the damn chain.

Alien Syndrome (NES) for something that's more of a run & gun style game. Not the very best but it's fast paced and I like it.

Also adding my vote to Gauntlet and Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
>>
>>3845826

Rad game, but the x68k version is better.

Nitro Ball!

Tyrian 2000.

One wouldn't expect it, but Apocalypse is a really fun game. I also recommend One.

Elemental Master is my shit. It seems easy enough until you get to that final fifth level. That would tear my asshole up

That's why I said "sadly". The best run'n'guns suffer from bullshit arcade difficulty.
>>
The Lost World on Genesis is pretty damn good. Better with a friend, of course.
>>

Must-plays, solid-to-decent, at least. Like I said, if you want more later, I can list others and see how you enjoy them.
